Cass County Adds Paramedics to Daytime Ambulances

ambulance-lightsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Many Nebraska communities rely on volunteers to provide emergency care on ambulances.

That’s true in Cass County, but officials there recently decided to hire two paramedics to supplement the volunteers especially on daytime calls.

The program is a partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center that state officials say might serve as a model for other counties.

Dr. Eric Ernst says getting quality care is crucial when a person is having a health crisis.

The new program that started Jan. 1 assigns one paramedic and one emergency medical technician to ambulance calls during the day when volunteers are usually working.

The county budgeted $356,000 to get the program started and pay for salaries and equipment.

Omaha Man’s 2 Murder Convictions Upheld

Terry Sellers

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has found no fault with a lower court’s dismissal of an Omaha man’s appeal of his first-degree murder convictions without an evidentiary hearing.

Terry Sellers was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to two life sentences for the 2005 murders of Kevin Pierce and Victor Ford.

The high court upheld Sellers’ convictions on direct appeal in 2010. Sellers then sought post-conviction relief, which is typically filed once all other appeals are exhausted. Inmates often claim in the motions that their lawyers were ineffective.

That was Sellers’ claim, and he says a Douglas County District Court judge should have held a hearing on his claims.

But on Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court disagreed, saying there was no merit to Sellers’ claims.

Duffy, Royals Agree to 1-Year Contract for $2,425,000

Danny-Duffy-Kansas-City-RoyKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pitcher Danny Duffy has agreed to a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals worth $2,425,000, avoiding a salary arbitration heading.

The 26-year-old left-hander was 9-12 with a 2.53 ERA in 25 starts and six relief appearances last year for the AL champions and held opponents to a .209 average. He won the AL Division Series opener against the Los Angeles Angels, when he pitched a scoreless 10th inning.

Duffy can earn $25,000 in performance bonuses under Friday’s agreement: $10,000 for 20 starts and $15,000 more for 25. He would get a $50,000 bonus if he’s an All-Star.

Duffy made $526,000 last year and was eligible for arbitration for the first time. He had asked for $3 million when proposed arbitration figures were exchanged last month, and the Royals had offered $1.75 million.

Kansas City has three players remaining in arbitration: relievers Greg Holland and Kelvin Herrera, and first baseman Eric Hosmer.

Randy Gregory Planning to ‘Turn a lot of Heads’ at Combine

Randy Gregory
Randy Gregory

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory says he’s going to “turn a lot of heads” at the NFL scouting combine in two weeks.

Gregory is a two-time, All-Big Ten first-team pick and is considered one of the best pass rushers available for the draft.

Gregory said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday that he would be most comfortable as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. Nebraska typically used a four-man front, with Gregory occasionally dropping to linebacker.

Gregory said he knows some draft analysts are concerned about his strength and ability to maintain weight. His goal is to bench press 225 pounds 20 times at the combine. He said he expects to weigh in at about 250 pounds. He sometimes was 20 pounds lighter at Nebraska.

NIT to Experiment with Different Rules, 30-Second Shot Clock

NIT NCAAINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Teams relegated to the NIT this season will have to play under experimental rules, including a 30-second shot clock and a 4-foot restricted area under the basket.

The NCAA says it is paring 5 seconds off the shot clock to see how it impacts pace and scoring totals. The arc is moving out a foot to examine how it changes the number of collisions under the basket by expanding the area in which charges usually cannot be drawn.

Coaches who play in the tournament will be surveyed about their experience, and the men’s basketball rules committee will look at all the data to consider future rules changes.

Omaha Couple Accused of Kidnapping Woman Set to Stand Trial

gavel-and-scaleOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A judge has ordered an Omaha couple accused of kidnapping and torturing a woman last month to stand trial.

A Douglas County judge ruled Friday that there is enough evidence to try 25-year-old Shavontae Green and 33-year-old Ronald F. Ford Jr.

Police say Green and Ford kidnapped a woman on Jan. 15 and took her home, where they sexually assaulted and tortured her.

Green has been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, sexual assault, tampering with physical evidence and assault. Ford faces the same charges, as well as use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and an additional count of sexual assault.

Online court records do not list an attorney for Green. An attorney for Ford could not be located.
