Open Auditions Set for NPCC Play ‘The Good Doctor’

npccNorth Platte Community College’s theater department will have open auditions for a spring production of “The Good Doctor” by Neil Simon.

Auditions will be from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 11 at NPCC’s McDonald-Belton Theater. They will be open to the public and no experience is necessary to try out. NPCC students, staff, administration and North Platte community members are all welcome to audition.

A prepared 1-minute long monologue is preferred, but not required. Actors may be asked to return for a callback audition, during which they will be asked to recite a provided monologue.

The play requires three to six actresses and three to five male actors. All must be age 20 or older. If there are not enough people to fill the cast, an alternative play may be selected.

Rehearsals will begin Feb. 16 and continue Monday through Friday from 6-9 p.m. each day, however, all actors may not be required to be there every night. Performances will be at 8 p.m. April 8 – 11.

For more information, or to make special time arrangements, contact Ritch Galvan at 535-3767 orgalvanr@mpcc.edu.

Nebraska National Guard Museum Auditions for Reality Show

nebraska-national-guardLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska National Guard Museum in Seward could be featured on an episode of a TV reality show.

Later this month, museum staff and Seward officials will try to convince Roger Barganier to build an exhibit that would be featured on his History Channel-affiliated show “Museum Men.” The Florida-based show focuses on Barganier and his team of craftsmen as they design and build historical exhibits for museums across the country.

Jerry Meyer, state historian for the Nebraska National Guard, would like the team to build a military artifact like the 1913 Curtiss Model D biplane. The replica plane would honor Capt. Ralph E. McMillen, a Guard pilot who owned and flew one in the 1900s.

Nebraska Nurse Practitioner Bill Earns First Round Approval

nurseLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill to lift restrictions on nurse practitioners has won initial approval from Nebraska lawmakers.

Senators voted 35-2 on Friday to advance the measure through a first-round vote. An identical bill was passed last year but vetoed by then-Gov. Dave Heineman after lawmakers adjourned for the year.

The bill would remove a requirement that nurse practitioners secure a written agreement to consult with a doctor before they can practice in Nebraska. The agreements are designed to ensure a physician is available if a patient doesn’t respond to treatment.

Supporters of the bill say the requirement makes it harder to keep nurse practitioners in Nebraska. The Nebraska Medical Association says it opposes the bill because of concerns about patient safety.

The governor’s State Capitol press secretary, Taylor Gage, will be based in Lincoln.

Pepperidge Farm Recalls 46,000 Bagels Due to Allergy Risk

pepperidge-farmNEW YORK (AP) — Pepperidge Farm is recalling about 46,000 packages of bagels because they may contain peanuts or almonds that could set off a serious allergic reaction.

The company said Friday that no illnesses have been reported. It was alerted to the problem by a bakery that makes the bagels.

The recall includes plain, everything and cinnamon raisin bagels. Mini bagels, sold in whole wheat, cinnamon raisin and brown sugar with cinnamon flavors, are also being recalled. The affected bagels have sell by dates ranging from Feb. 7 to Feb. 12.

Pete Ricketts

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts has appointed a Louisiana health official as chief executive officer for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Ricketts announced Friday that Courtney Phillips will fill the position beginning April 2.

Phillips currently serves as deputy secretary of Louisiana’s Department of Health and Hospitals. She has worked in the department since 2003, overseeing offices for developmental disabilities, mental health, public health, aging and adult services, and the deaf.

The announcement comes after a nationwide search for a leader to transform the beleaguered department. Nebraska DHHS has been criticized for problems with its child welfare system as well as ACCESS Nebraska, a service that helps Nebraskans apply for and renew public benefits.

Phillips’ annual salary will be $200,000.

Huskers Look for Road Win at Penn State

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska men’s basketball team looks for its first Big Ten road win of the season, as the Huskers travel to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 3:05 p.m. (central) and the contest will be televised nationally on ESPNU with Clay Matvick and Sean Harrington on the call. Saturday’s game is also available online and on mobile devices on the WatchESPN app.

The game will be broadcast across the state of Nebraska on the 37-station IMG Husker Sports Radio Network, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln, 1110 KFAB in Omaha and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington with Kent Pavelka calling the action and Matt Davison adding color commentary. The game can be heard for free on Huskers.com and is available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as on TuneIn Radio and on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The Huskers (13-9, 5-5 Big Ten) bounced back from a pair of losses with one of their best performances of the year, shooting 63 percent from the floor in posting a 76-60 win over Northwestern Tuesday evening. It was Nebraska’s best shooting effort from the field in five seasons and highest shooting percentage against a conference opponent in 16 seasons.

Terran Petteway led three Huskers in double figures against Northwestern with 28 points – his 11th 20-point game of the season – seven rebounds and four assists. The 6-foot-6 junior is one of only five players in the country averaging 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, as he ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring. Petteway comes intoSaturday’s game needing three points to reach 1,000 points for his Husker career.

Juniors Shavon Shields and Walter Pitchford joined Petteway in double figures on Tuesday, combining for 25 points. Shields, who reached the 1,000-point mark against Northwestern, had 11 points and a career-high eight assists, while Pitchford had 14 points, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, as his outburst was his highest point total since November.

With a 5-5 mark, the Huskers are in the middle of a jumbled pack, as only two games separate second through 10th place in the conference standings entering this weekend’s action.

Penn State is 14-9 on the season and 2-8 in the Big Ten following a 64-58 loss at Maryland on Wednesday. In that game, D.J. Newbill led the Nittany Lions with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The fifth-year senior leads the Big Ten in scoring at 21.3 points per game. PSU has been in close games in Big Ten play, as five of their eight losses are by six points or less.

Woman Accused of Drowning Puppy at GI Airport Free on Bond

Cynthia Anderson

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Florida authorities have decided not to come to Nebraska now to retrieve a woman wanted on a Florida warrant alleging felony theft.

Nebraska authorities have charged 56-year-old Cynthia Anderson with animal neglect, accusing her of drowning a puppy in a Grand Island airport bathroom. She’s free on bond awaiting Nebraska action, now that she’s not being held for Florida authorities.

Hall County Attorney Jack Zitterkopf said when Florida officials learned they would have to come to Nebraska for Anderson, they decided it wasn’t worth the effort.

A spokesman for Florida’s 7th Judicial Circuit, Spencer Hathaway, said Friday that the Florida case will remain pending and a decision about any effort to return Anderson to Florida will be reviewed after the Nebraska case is completed.

Iowan Gets Life in Prison for Murdering Nebraska Woman

Raymond Gonzales, Jr.
Raymond Gonzales, Jr.

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — A 23-year-old Iowa man has been given life in prison for killing a northeast Nebraska woman.

Raymond Gonzales Jr. had been convicted of first-degree murder and a weapons crime. He was sentenced on Thursday in Dakota County District Court.

Police say Gonzales shot 28-year-old Bonnie Baker 16 times in her South Sioux City home on Dec. 15, 2013. His attorney, Todd Lancaster, of the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy, says he will appeal the verdict. Lancaster had argued during the trial that police focused only on evidence that pointed toward Gonzales.
