College Freshmen Partied Less Than Their Parents in High School, Report Low Emotional Health

college-partySAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A new survey of the nation’s college freshmen shows that teenagers across the United States are spending much less time partying and socializing with friends during their last year of high school than their parents’ generation did.

The annual survey released Wednesday, conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA, also found that first-year college students’ sense of emotional well-being is at its lowest level since the institute first asked incoming freshmen to rate their mental health in 1985.

Kevin Eagan, the institute’s managing director and an assistant professor at UCLA, says the results indicate the millennial generation faces greater pressure to succeed academically and has less time to have fun.

Other survey trends show that students are increasingly drinking less alcohol as high school seniors, submitting more college applications and reporting they feel overwhelmed.

Committee Hears Bills to Ban LGBT Discrimination in Nebraska

lgbtLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska legislative committee has heard hours of testimony on bills that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in hiring, adoptions and foster parent selection.

The Judiciary Committee heard from supporters Wednesday who said the bills would provide more homes for needy children and keep Nebraska’s job market competitive.

Opponents included representatives for Nebraska Catholic Conference and Thomas More Society. They argued that opposite-sex parents are best suited to raise children and said that the hiring bill could conflict with employers’ religious beliefs.

The committee’s chairman said the panel won’t vote on the bills until next week at the earliest.

Sen. Colby Coash of Lincoln said he’s not sure of the legislation’s chances of advancing to the overwhelmingly conservative full Legislature, where he said it would face a tough road.

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Ethan Montalvo hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points as Texas State clobbered cold-shooting South Alabama 63-43 on Wednesday night.

With the win, Texas State (11-10, 5-7 Sun Belt) has swept the season series and owns the tie-breaker on South Alabama (7-16, 5-7).

Nearly a third of the Bobcats’ made field goals (23) were 3-pointers as they hit eight from long range. They made a season-high 10 in their first meeting with South Alabama.

The Jaguars scored a season-low in points, held to 31-percent shooting (16-52), making just 4 of 16 from 3-point range and 7 of 12 from the line. Texas State’s defensive stopper Wes Davis was back in the lineup after injury.

Ken Williams led the Jaguars with nine points on 3 of 12 shooting.

JaMarcus Weatherspoon added 12 points for Texas State, which scored the first seven points and led by 18 at halftime.

Benched at Start, Sullinger helps Celtics beat Denver at End

Denver_NuggetsBOSTON (AP) — Benched at the start because of lateness, Jared Sullinger made two free throws with 22.8 seconds left to break a tie and lift the Boston Celtics over the Denver Nuggets 104-100 Wednesday night.

Coach Brad Stevens kept Sullinger out of the lineup for the second straight home game after the forward was late for the afternoon shootaround. On Sunday, he was late for a walkthrough.

Sullinger wound up scoring 14 points. It was 100-all when he was fouled by Kenneth Faried driving to the basket, and he hit both free throws.

The Celtics won their second in a row and seemed energized by a loud ovation from the crowd that honored several New England Patriots who were in attendance after winning the Super Bowl. Defensive back Malcolm Butler, who saved Sunday’s victory over Seattle with an interception in the closing seconds, was among those at the game.

Bill to Restore Cigar Bars Advanced by Nebraska Lawmakers

cigarLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Cigar smokers could once again light up in licensed Nebraska cigar bars under a bill advanced by lawmakers.

The first-round vote on Wednesday comes after the Nebraska Supreme Court struck down a 2009 law that allowed smoking in cigar bars and shops, despite the Nebraska Clean Indoor Air Act.

The measure by Sen. Tyson Larson of O’Neill makes clear that state lawmakers intended to create a legal exemption for those establishments so they could continue to operate.

Larson says only 10 cigar bars have been in operation statewide over the last five years, and those businesses have made large investments to ensure they have adequate ventilations systems.

Nebraska Winner-Take-All Bill Voted Out of Committee

NE LegislatureLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill to reinstate Nebraska’s winner-take-all system in presidential elections is headed to the full Legislature.

The Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee voted 7-1 on Wednesday to advance the proposal.

Nebraska and Maine are the only states where it’s possible to split electoral votes between opposing presidential candidates. Nebraska adopted a system in 1991 that awards two electoral votes to the statewide winner, while distributing the other three based on who wins its three congressional districts.

Nebraska split its electoral votes for the first time in 2008, when Democrat Barack Obama captured one from the state’s 2nd congressional district.

Nebraska’s Republican Party has endorsed the proposal, while Democrats oppose it.

Omaha Sen. Beau McCoy, who sponsored the bill, says the debate was taking place long before the 2008 election.

Texas Company Postpones Northeast Nebraska Plant Project

tejas-tubularLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Texas-based company that makes piping and casing for oil and gas drilling has postponed plans to build a manufacturing plant in northeast Nebraska.

Tejas (TAY’-hahs) Tubular Products President Maximo Tejeda (teh-HAY’-duh) said he remains committed to building a mill next to Nucor Steel in Norfolk.

But Tejeda says uncertainty in the oil market has delayed his company’s aggressive timetable and forced adjustments in its growth plans.

Officials have said the $100 million plant would have employed 200 people.

Tejas Tubular headquarters is in Houston.
