Heat Blamed for Spray Vaccine’s Failure Against Swine Flu

flu-mist-vaccineATLANTA (AP) — The makers of the nasal spray version of the flu vaccine say they now know why it didn’t protect young children against swine flu — the doses got too warm.

The spray FluMist works well for most flu strains, but small studies found it didn’t work very well against the swine flu bug that first emerged in 2009.

The maker AstraZeneca has been investigating since the problem came to light last year. At a medical meeting Thursday, officials said they concluded that the swine flu part of the vaccine is unusually sensitive to heat. The vaccine is refrigerated.

A company official said a more stable strain would be used in the future.

The swine flu strain hasn’t been a big player this flu season.

Prosecution Witness Accused of Killing Gering Girl in 2008

gavel-moreGERING, Neb. (AP) — A prosecution witness has been accused of killing a 2-year-old Nebraska girl more than six years ago.

Defense attorney Jeff Pickens confronted Brandon Townsend as he retook the stand in a Gering courtroom on Wednesday and said to him, “You killed Juliette, didn’t you.”

“No, sir,” was Townsend’s reply.

Townsend was living with Dustin Chauncey and the little girl’s mother, Charyse Geurts, in July 2008, when Juliette was beaten to death. Chauncey is charged with child abuse resulting in the girl’s death.

Pickens accused Townsend of killing Juliette because Townsend was angry at hearing Chauncey and Charyse Geurts having sex in a nearby bedroom. Townsend briefly dated Geurts before she became involved with Chauncey.

Townsend has not been charged with any crime in Juliette Geurts’ death.

Timeline In a Bottle Reveals Earlier Work on Nebraska Farmhouse

rural-nebraskaMcCOOK, Neb. (AP) — A timeline in a bottle reveals that a farmhouse being renovated in southwest Nebraska has been rebuilt twice before.

Shad Dewey’s 14-year-old daughter found the bottle as they were working on their home, which sits six miles northeast of McCook.

A rolled-up note inside it said: “This farm owned by Mr. and Mrs. Del Pate from 1917 — rebuilt in 1924 — burned by fire Sept. 27, 1932 — rebuilt and completed Jan. 1, 1933 by contractor Jake L. Klein, McCook, Nebraska.”

It was information Dewey had wondered about since buying the farmhouse in 1999.

The note from the past has spurred his family to create their own time capsule: a plastic pipe that they’ll fill with a written history of their renovations.

Labs Extend Record as US Top Dog, But Bulldogs Make Waves

labradorNEW YORK (AP) — The American Kennel Club is releasing its 2014 breed popularity rankings on Thursday.

They show Labrador retrievers reigned as the nation’s top dog for the 24th year. They broke poodles’ decades-old record in 2013.

But bulldogs have hit a new high: No. 4. Their smaller, bat-eared cousins, French bulldogs, sauntered into the top 10 for the first time in nearly a century. They’re now No. 9.

German shepherds, golden retrievers and beagles are holding their own in the top five. Yorkshire terriers, poodles, boxers and Rottweilers fill out the top 10.

Dachshunds slipped from 10th to 11th.

The AKC doesn’t release raw numbers, only rankings. They reflect puppies and other newly registered dogs.

Eric Bledsoe added 18 points for the Suns, who had six players score in double figures as they ended a seven-game road skid. The Suns grabbed 65 rebounds, most in the NBA this season.

Will Barton had 22 points and Danilo Gallinari chipped in 20 as the Nuggets lost their eighth straight game at Pepsi Center. It’s their longest losing streak at home since dropping 10 in a row beginning in April 1997 and spilling over into the following season.

A North Platte father and son remain in critical condition following a fire on Valentine’s Day.

Brent Farley and his son, Nathaniel, were working on a motorcycle in their garage, at 416 South Chestnut, when a propane heater ignited gasoline fumes.

Nathaniel received 3rd degree burns to over 80% of his body, and Brent suffered 3rd degree burns to over 90% of his body.

They were both transported to CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln.

According to family members, both Nathaniel and Brent have had “a couple of good days, considering the circumstances.”

Brent has reportedly had a couple of skin grafts, and Nathaniel was going to undergo some skin grafting today.

Cards and pictures can be sent to the Farleys at:

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital
c/o Brent Farley
c/o Nathaniel Farley
575 South 70th Street

Family members say flowers and balloons are not allowed, but they say cards of encouragement will “lift their spirits when they wake up.”

To make matters worse, Nathaniel does not have health insurance, and will need assistance with medical expenses.  The family also needs assistance with general expenses.

Several local businesses have stepped up to help.
