Talbot, Barrie help Avs Rally past Stars 3-2 in Shootout

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDALLAS (AP) — Maxime Talbot scored the winner in the 11th round of the shootout after Tyson Barrie tied it in the final minute of regulation, and the Colorado Avalanche rallied to beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 Tuesday night.

The Avalanche were down 2-0 in the third period in a matchup of teams that started the night one point apart in the Central Division and trying to climb into the playoff picture after slow starts.

Colorado matched a season low with 16 shots in regulation, but the last one was Barrie’s one-timer from just inside the blue line with 19 seconds remaining. Ryan O’Reilly got the Avalanche within a goal 6:12 into the third.

Patrick Eaves scored on Dallas’ suddenly potent power play, and Erik Cole added a goal late in the second period.

NBA Commissioner: All-Star Rosters Could Expand in Future

Adam Silver

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says the league will look at expanding All-Star rosters and the way players are selected.

Speaking before the Kings-Warriors game in Sacramento on Tuesday night, Silver said the NBA will discuss increasing the number of spots for the All-Star game with the players’ union in the future. He says he’s mostly happy with the voting process but could see players getting a vote, too.

Currently, 12 players are selected for the Eastern and Western Conference teams. Fans vote for the starters and coaches choose the reserves. Silver selects any replacements, as he did last week when he chose Kings center DeMarcus Cousins to take Kobe Bryant’s spot in the West.

Silver said it was a difficult decision to select Cousins over Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard. He says he felt for Lillard, and the two exchanged text messages about the decision.

Thompson has Career-High 23, 76ers beat Nuggets 105-98

Denver_NuggetsPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hollis Thompson scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 105-98 victory over the slumping Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.

Michael Carter-Williams had 15 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds and Robert Covington added 17 points for the improving 76ers, who won their third straight home game for the first time since March 2013.

Danilo Gallinari scored 22 points to pace the Nuggets, who dropped their 10th in 11 games. Denver has lost its last three games by an average of 21.7 points.

The 76ers were the laughingstock of the league while starting the season with 17 straight losses. But they have begun to click.

Philadelphia has won three of five, with the two losses in competitive games on the road against Eastern Conference contenders Atlanta and Cleveland.

Terran Petteway’s 28 leads Nebraska past Northwestern 76-60

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Terran Petteway scored 28 points and Nebraska had its best shooting game of the season in a 76-60 victory over Northwestern on Tuesday night.

Walter Pitchford added 14 points and Shavon Shields had 11 points and seven assists for the Cornhuskers (13-9, 5-5 Big Ten), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Northwestern (10-12, 1-8), which lost its eighth straight, got 16 points from Alex Olah, 12 from Scottie Lindsey and 11 from Vic Law.

The Huskers shot season bests of 62.8 percent from the floor — the first time they made more than half their shots in a Big Ten game — and 47.6 percent on 3-pointers.

Petteway finished his big night with a 3-pointer and breakaway dunk in the final minute.

The Huskers were coming off horrid road losses to Michigan and Minnesota. They shot a combined 33.6 percent in those two games, committed a season-high 20 turnovers against Michigan and scored a season-low 42 points against Minnesota.

Wind Farm Firm Agrees to Stop Turbines in Nebraska During Severe Weather

windmillHASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A company building a wind farm near a National Weather Service radar site in Nebraska has agreed to shut down the windmills during severe weather when forecasters ask.

The weather service says wind farms can look like rain or thunderstorms on weather radar.

The weather service announced the agreement with NextEra Energy Resources on Tuesday. The pact applies to a planned wind farm of up to 66 turbines south of Blue Hill.

Under the agreement, NextEra will shut down its turbines for up to an hour at a time anytime forecasters ask between March 21 and September 21.

ACLU Nebraska Says Federal Immigration Agents Profiled Probationers

aclu-nebOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska says a state probation office in Omaha has stopped allowing federal immigration agents from profiling probation clients at the office.

The ACLU says it sent a warning letter to the probation office last month after receiving complaints from attorneys. The attorneys said their Latino clients who met with probation officers were often subjected to questioning, without a warrant, by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The ACLU says that the probation office informed it on Jan. 23 that it will now require federal immigration agents to have a warrant to interact with probation office clients.

Neither the probation office nor an Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman immediately responded to questions Tuesday about the practice.

Opponents Push for Repeal of Nebraska Prairie Dog Law

prairie-dogLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska wildlife advocates are trying to repeal a law designed to limit the spread of black-tailed prairie dogs, a critical native species that some ranchers view as pests.

Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha presented his repeal measure Tuesday to the Legislature’s Agriculture Committee, saying the current law is too vague and runs afoul of property rights. Wildlife groups and the Nebraska Farmer’s Union support his effort, saying the law is heavy-handed.

The 2012 law gives counties the option to manage prairie dog populations when a landowner’s neighbors complain about the animals on their property. Since the law passed, only Sheridan County has created a management plan.

Larry Dix of the Nebraska Association of County Officials says the county has not fielded any complaints since the law went into effect.

Nebraska Man Convicted of Paying to Have Plant Burned Down

gavel-moreOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska man has been convicted of hiring someone to set his struggling manufacturing business on fire in an effort to obtain $4 million in insurance money.

A federal jury on Tuesday found 52-year-old Thomas Schropp guilty of arson, mail and wire fraud. He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years for the arson conviction and up to 20 years for the mail and wire fraud convictions.

Prosecutors say Schropp’s business, PK Manufacturing in Nashville, Neb., was purposefully set on fire in November 2008 after he had asked an associate to burn it down for $20,000. They say Schropp filed an insurance claim for $4 million, which the insurance company denied.

Schropp’s attorney Alan Stoler said he plans to appeal the jury’s verdict.

No. 19 Huskers Open East Coast Swing at No. 21 Rutgers

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 19 Nebraska women’s basketball team makes its first-ever trip to Piscataway, N.J., to take on No. 21 Rutgers in a Big Ten Conference top-25 showdown on Thursday night.

Tip-off between the Big Red (17-4, 7-3 Big Ten) and the Scarlet Knights (16-5, 7-3 Big Ten) is set for 6 p.m. (CT), with live national television coverage by the Big Ten Network. Ed Cohen and Vera Jones will be on the call for BTN. Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, with Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch calling the action on stations across the network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln, 93.3 FM in Omaha and 880 AM in Lexington.

The Huskers, who have won seven of their last eight games, take a 17-game February winning streak with them to New Jersey. Nebraska has not lost a game in the month of February since a 73-53 loss at Michigan State on Feb. 23, 2012. Three of Nebraska’s 17 wins in their February streak have come to top-25 foes, including a pair of top-10 wins over No. 8 Ohio State in 2012 and No. 8 Penn State in 2014. The Huskers have not beaten a top-25 team on the road during the 17-game February winning streak.

Nebraska rebounded from an overtime loss at No. 20 Iowa on Jan. 26, to sweep a pair of home wins against Illinois (Jan. 29) and Michigan (Feb. 1).

Senior Tear’a Laudermill led the Big Red in scoring in all three games. The 5-9 guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., has produced double figures in six straight games, including 24 points in a road win at Wisconsin on Jan. 22. Laudermill, who was a second-team All-Big Ten pick last year, has pushed her season averages to 13.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

The Huskers continue to be led in scoring by junior point guard Rachel Theriot. The All-America candidate is averaging 16.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. A first-team All-Big Ten pick a year ago, Theriot has produced double figures in 19 of 21 games this season.

Senior Emily Cady, a second-team All-Big Ten pick, adds a potent inside presence. The 6-2 forward from Seward, Neb., averages 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists. In Sunday’s win over Michigan, she became the fifth Husker and 17th player in Big Ten history to record 1,000 career rebounds.

Royals’ Cain ($2,725,000), Moustakas ($2.64M) Reach Deals

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Postseason star Lorenzo Cain and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a one-year contract for $2,725,000, just ahead of what would have been Major League Baseball’s first salary arbitration hearing this year.

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas also settled Tuesday, agreeing to a one-year contract for $2.64 million.

Cain had asked for $3.6 million and had been offered $2 million when the sides swapped figures last month. In addition to his salary, the speedy outfielder would earn a $25,000 bonus for 505 plate appearances.

The sides entered the room for the hearing, which was scheduled to start at 2 p.m., then stepped outside the room and reached the agreement.

Cain, 28, hit a team-best .301 with five homers, 53 RBIs and 28 steals in 33 chances last season, when he made $546,000. He was MVP of the Royals’ sweep of Baltimore in the AL Championship Series after batting .533 (8 for 15) with a pair of doubles. He hit .308 in the World Series loss to San Francisco.

The 26-year-old Moustakas would earn a $10,000 bonus if he has 550 or more plate appearances. He hit .212 with 21 doubles and 54 RBIs last year, when he made $549,000. He had asked for $3.1 million in arbitration and had been offered $1.85 million.

Four Royals remain in arbitration: first baseman Eric Hosmer and pitchers Danny Duffy, Kelvin Herrera and Greg Holland.
