Study: College Completion Gap Between Rich, Poor Widens

college-campusLOS ANGELES (AP) — The gap in bachelor-degree attainment between the nation’s richest and poorest students by age 24 has doubled during the last four decades.

A study released Tuesday by two education organizations finds that the percent of students from the lowest-income families earning a bachelor’s degree has inched up just 3 points since 1970, rising from 6 to 9 percent by 2013.

Meanwhile, college completion for students from the wealthiest families has risen dramatically, climbing from 44 to 77 percent.

The report comes amid renewed debate on college affordability spurred by President Barack Obama’s proposal to make two years of college free. If adopted in every state, the proposal would benefit a projected 9 million students each year. It would cost taxpayers an estimated $60 billion over 10 years.

Nebraska Groundwater Report Says Some Levels Up, Some Down

groundwaterLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says groundwater levels have continued to drop in some parts of Nebraska but have risen elsewhere.

A state geologist, Aaron Young, says that from the spring 2013 to the spring 2014, groundwater levels continued to decline following the drought the state suffered from early 2012 through the summer of 2013. But he says the easing of drought conditions for the eastern half of the state and better water use practices moderated the declines.

Groundwater levels rose in some areas, however. In northern Colfax County, for example, in spring 2012 the groundwater level dropped more than 20 feet. By spring 2014, water levels had risen two to 10 feet in the same area.

NTSB Links Selfies to Deadly Plane Crash Near Denver

ntsbDENVER (AP) — Federal investigators say selfies were a likely factor in a small plane crash near Denver last year that killed two.

The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that it appears likely the pilot was disoriented and lost control of the airplane. Recordings from a GoPro camera found in the wreckage show the pilot and passenger repeatedly taking photographs of themselves with their cellphones during previous flights that day, although there was no video of the deadly flight.

The NTSB said evidence of the pilot’s previous cellphone use made it likely he was distracted by such use during his last flight.

The crash killed 29-year-old pilot Amritpal Singh and his passenger shortly after they took off May 31from Front Range Airport in Adams County.

Infections Most Common Cause of Readmissions After Surgery

Medical-ChartCHICAGO (AP) — New research says the most common reason why many surgery patients go back to the hospital is infections around the incision.

Symptoms typically show up several days after patients go home but most infections begin in the hospital.

The study of almost 350 hospitals also found that readmission rates vary widely by surgery.

The lowest unexpected readmission rate in the study was just under 4 percent for hysterectomy patients. The highest was almost 15 percent, for artery disease patients who had surgery to reroute blood flow in the legs.

The study’s lead author says to avoid re-hospitalization and dangerous complications, patients should seek treatment at the earliest sign of an infection. That may include redness or swelling.

The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

House Speaker Boehner: ‘All Children Ought to Be Vaccinated’

John Boehner

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner says all children ought to be vaccinated.

Boehner made the comment in response to a question Tuesday about whether there’s a role for Congress on vaccines.

His response: “I don’t know that we need another law but I do believe that all children ought to be vaccinated.”

Other politicians have been less clear on the question amid a measles outbreak in the U.S.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said parents should have some choice in the matter, a comment his office later clarified by saying that with a disease like measles there’s no question kids should be vaccinated.

Doctors say all children should be vaccinated but there is an anti-vaccine movement among some parents.

DENVER (AP) — Reliever John Axford has agreed to a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies and will try to earn a job as a setup man for closer LaTroy Hawkins.

Axford was 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 62 games with Cleveland and Pittsburgh last year, when he struck out 63 and walked 36.

In six seasons in the major leagues, Axford is 24-23 with a 3.40 ERA and 116 saves, including 10 for Cleveland in last year.

He would get a $2.6 million, one-year contract if he’s added to the 40-man roster and have the chance to earn performance bonuses.

NP Man Arrested for DUI, Threatening to Stab Police Officer

Confucius says, never threaten to stab a police officer.

A North Platte man learned that lesson after he allegedly did just that early Tuesday morning.

At around 2:30 a.m., on February 3, an officer on patrol observed a parked vehicle near the main entrance to Cody Park, 1601 North Jeffers Street.

According to police, the driver, 32-year-old Eric Curtis, appeared to be unconscious behind the wheel and was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

Eventually, the officer was able to get Curtis out of the vehicle, and attempted to conduct an investigation for driving under the influence.  However, authorities say Curtis was too intoxicated to complete the tests as ordered by the officer.

At one point, Curtis allegedly told the officer that he had a knife and was going to stab him.

The officer called for backup after Curtis began kicking him in the chest.  He was eventually detained for transport to the jail.

Officer Rodney Brown said during transport to the Lincoln County Detention Center, Curtis continued to be aggressive and belligerent.

In the end, Curtis was jailed and charged with felony driving under the influence of liquor (3rd), driving under suspension, refusal to submit to a breath test, felony assault on a peace officer and obstructing the police.

As of Tuesday morning, Curtis was being held without bond.

Raftery, Grant Hill to Call Final Four in Place of Anthony

Final Four 2015NEW YORK (AP) — Bill Raftery and Grant Hill will call the Final Four this season, taking the place of the suspended Greg Anthony.

CBS and Turner Sports said Tuesday that Raftery and Hill will work as analysts alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz.

Anthony was suspended for the rest of the season Jan. 17 after he was arrested in Washington on charges he solicited a prostitute.

Raftery will get to call his first Final Four for TV after more than three decades of broadcasting the NCAA tournament. This will be Hill’s first year working as a game analyst during the tourney.

Hill won two national titles at Duke and played 19 seasons in the NBA before retiring and joining Turner Sports in 2013.

House to Vote Next Week on Keystone Pipeline

house-of-representativesWASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican leaders say the House will vote next week on legislation to construct the Keystone XL pipeline and send it to President Barack Obama. Obama has threatened a veto.

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday that the House will consider the Senate-passed bill, which also included provisions stating that climate change is not a hoax.

The House passed a version of the bill last month. The Senate voted 62-36 last week to build the $8 billion project that would connect with existing pipelines to carry more than 800,000 barrels of crude oil a day to refineries along the Texas Gulf coast. That vote was short of 67 votes needed to override a presidential veto.

Girls Held in Brother’s Shooting Could Get Lesser Charges

gavel-and-scaleLAKE CITY, Fla. (AP) — Prosecutors in the case of two young North Florida sisters accused in fatal shooting of their 16-year-old brother say they’re considering dropping charges against the youngest girl and greatly reducing charges against the other.

Third Circuit State Attorney Jeff Siegmeister said Tuesday he’ll make a final decision after a Thursday court hearing.

The Jan. 5 shooting resulted in the arrests of a 15-year-old girl and her 11-year-old sister on second-degree murder charges.

Documents show the elder girl suffered years of abuse, including being locked in her bedroom for days with only a blanket and a bucket to use the bathroom. Siegmeister says those details and the girls’ ages are being considered in any charges.

The Associated Press is not naming members of the family because of the girls’ ages and because of abuse allegations.
