MPCC Increases Tuition, Room and Board Fees for 2015-16

npccIt’s going to cost students an extra $2 per credit hour to take “for credit” classes through Mid-Plains Community College next year.

On Wednesday, the MPCC Board of Governors approved a 2.13 percent increase in resident tuition – raising the per credit hour rate from $79 to $81.

Fees will stay the same at $15 per credit hour. The total per credit hour tuition and fees will go from $94 to $96. Changes will affect the 2015-16 academic year beginning July 1.

Preliminary figures show MPCC will continue to rank in the middle when compared to what other community colleges in Nebraska may charge for tuition. The estimated average is $96.86 per credit hour for tuition and fees.

MPCC offers in-state tuition to students residing in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota.

Students not eligible for in-state tuition will see a similar rate increase. Fees will stay capped at $15 per credit hour, but tuition will bump up from $103 per credit hour to $105 per credit hour for the 2015-16 school year.

The Board also approved new room and board rates for 2015-16. In North Platte, rates will increase anywhere from 1.6 percent to 5.5 percent depending on the meal plan.

Those with a 10-meal plan will see their bills go up by $145 per semester. If students are on the 14-meal plan, the cost will increase by $60 per semester, and if they are on the 19-meal plan, they will pay an extra $50 per semester.

In McCook, room and board rates will increase by either 5.1 percent or 5.8 percent. Students with a 14-meal plan will pay an additional $160 per semester, and those with a 19-meal plan will be charged an extra $150 per semester.

“Utilities and operational expenses are the culprits for housing increases,” said Chuck Salestrom, area associate vice president of public information and marketing. “The meal plans are going to cost more due to the increases in food prices. As a result, we’re forced to pass those costs on to our students living in the residence halls.”

AP Source: 49ers to Bid to Host College Football Title Game

College Football Playoff NCAASANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers will bid to host the college football playoff championship game at Levi’s Stadium.

A person with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the team will seek to host either the 2018, ’19 or ’20 title game when they come up for bid later this year. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because there has been no announcement about the plans.

Cities interested in hosting one of those three title games have until May to bid. A decision on the winners is expected in the fall.

While the semifinal games in the four-team playoff have been awarded to existing bowl games, playoff officials have opened up the championship game to all cities.

AT&T Stadium in the Dallas area hosted the first college championship game last month between Ohio State and Oregon. The next two title games have been awarded to Glendale, Arizona, and Tampa, Florida.

AP Source: Manning, Broncos Talking About Reworking Contract

Peyton-ManningENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the negotiations confirms the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning’s representatives are discussing ways to revise his contract and give the team more flexibility in free agency.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

Manning, who has made more money than any player in pro football history, is due to make another $19 million in both 2015 and ’16, and his salary cap number for next season is $21.2 million.

John Elway has traditionally been one of the more aggressive general managers in the NFL when it comes to free agency.

Nuggets’ Faried, Chandler Out with Injuries against Suns

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets are without banged-up forwards Kenneth Faried and Wilson Chandler on Wednesday night against the Phoenix Suns.

Faried is sidelined with a bruised left thumb, which he hurt in the first half Monday against Brooklyn. Chandler is missing a second straight game due to a sore left groin. Chandler said the move was precautionary and he hopes to return Friday against Utah.

The news that Faried couldn’t play caught Nuggets coach Brian Shaw a little by surprise since the high energy forward practiced the day before.

Shaw said of Faried: “It was his call and he said he wasn’t going to be able to play tonight. You can’t question that. He knows himself better than anybody else does.”

Faried is averaging 11.3 points and 8.6 rebounds this season.

Official: Body Found is Missing California Baby

Police said earlier that they didn’t suspect foul play.

Mid-Plains Community College President Ryan Purdy, Area Vice-President of Academic Affairs and North Platte Community College Jody Tomanek and MPCC Rodeo Team Coach Dustin Elliott present Aukai Kaai, MPCC student and rodeo team member, with a $1,000 scholarship Wednesday night during a MPCC Board of Governors meeting.

It was the first time money from rodeo team fundraisers was used for a scholarship – typically, it goes toward traveling and other team expenses.

“We’re hoping to do this every semester,” said Elliott. “It’s a dual excellence scholarship because the students who receive it have to excel in both the arena and the classroom. They have to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify.”

Kaai competes in bull riding and team roping. He’s a native of Waimānalo, Hawaii.

Nebraska Cities, School Boards Oppose Open Ballot Bills

NE LegislatureLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lobbyists for Nebraska cities and school boards are fighting two bills that would require elected officials to disclose how they voted when picking leaders.

Both groups faced sharp questioning from senators Wednesday as a legislative committee considered the proposals.

Sen. Bill Kintner of Papillion says the bills would ensure the public knows how lawmakers and other elected officials vote when choosing legislative committee chairmen, school board presidents and other leaders.

Some lawmakers say Kintner, a Republican, is attempting to impose party discipline on moderate GOP lawmakers in the nonpartisan Legislature, an allegation he denies.

The city and school board groups were grilled by committee members after arguing that the open votes for leadership roles could lead to conflicts among elected officials.

North Carolina Man Convicted of Tax Evasion in Nebraska

dept.-of-justiceOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A North Carolina man has been found guilty of not paying his federal income taxes for the three years he worked in Omaha.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg says a jury found 59-year-old Chet Lee West of Nebo, North Carolina, guilty Tuesday of three counts of tax evasion.

West faces up to 15 years in prison when he’s sentenced May 18.

Federal officials say West failed to file tax returns or pay taxes on the more than $272,000 he earned while living and working in Omaha from 2007 through 2009. Officials also say West gave his employer numerous letters and affidavits stating he was not required to pay income taxes and that he deposited his income in variously named bank accounts in an effort to hide his income.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Tim Miles is about to find out if his tough love gets the results he desires.

The Cornhuskers (13-14, 5-10 Big Ten) have lost five straight and seven of eight heading into Thursday night’s game at Ohio State (19-8, 8-6).

They hit bottom with a 28-point home loss to Iowa on Sunday. Miles responded by locking his players out of their posh locker room and lounge and cutting off media access to them.

Miles said the team showed “outstanding” effort in the two practices after the Iowa game.

The Huskers have scored 46 or fewer points in four of their last eight games. While going 0-7 in Big Ten road games, the Huskers are shooting 22.7 percent on 3s and averaging 51.7 points.

He says he hasn’t decided when the lockout would end.
