Lincoln Developer to Convert Former Hospital Into Apartments

lincoln-nebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s Historic Preservation Commission has approved a request for landmark designation for the former Wesleyan Hospital and Nurse Training School, which will open the pathway for a developer to convert the building into apartments for Wesleyan students.

The city approved the landmark designation, which would allow developer Brett Harris to receive state tax credits to help pay for the renovation, on Thursday.

The Planning Commission and Lincoln City Council will now consider the city’s request.

Harris says that he may seek a landmark designation from the National Register of Historic Places, which would help him gain federal tax credits.

Justices to Review Sentences for Young Convicts

supreme-courtWASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is adding a new case to decide whether its 3-year-old ruling throwing out mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles should apply to older cases.

The court was scheduled to hear arguments in a case from Louisiana in late March, but the state released inmate George Toca after 30 years in prison.

The justices on Monday said they would consider a new Louisiana case involving a man who has been held since 1963 for killing a sheriff’s deputy in Baton Rouge.

Henry Montgomery was a 17-year-old 10th grader who was playing hooky from school when he shot Deputy Charles Hurt at a park near the city’s airport. The officer and his partner were looking to round up truants.

The case will be argued in the fall.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A June date has been set for the start of a Nebraska man’s second trial in the death of his grandson.

Peter Draper, of Naponee, in January was granted a new trial by the Nebraska Supreme Court as it reversed his 2013 convictions in the death of 2-year-old Joseph Rinehart Jr.

The high court unanimously sided with Draper, who had appealed his conviction on the grounds that his wife should not have been allowed to be called as a witness for the prosecution.

Court documents say the second trial is scheduled to begin June 22 with jury selection. The documents say the trial will be held in Adams County District Court in Hastings because the Franklin County District Court courtroom is inadequate.

4 NPHS Students Cited for Pot Possession Following Search by Law Enforcement

nphsSeveral students at North Platte High School have been cited for marijuana infractions following a sweep of the school and school property by area law enforcement.

On March 23, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, North Platte Police Department and numerous other law enforcement agencies conducted a K-9 search of NPHS.

According to the LCSO, law enforcement didn’t locate any contraband inside the school building.  They did however locate numerous illegal items in vehicles parked on school grounds.

Deputies say following the search, four students were cited for possession of marijuana less than one ounce and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They say the search was part of a continuing effort to “keep our schools drug free.”

Authorities say the Broken Bow Police Department, Deuel County Sheriff’s Office and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office assisted local law enforcement with the effort.

Additional searches will be conducted at other Lincoln County Schools.

The names and ages of the students cited were not released.

In Nebraska, first offense possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is an infraction, punishable by a fine of up to $300.
