The three people, all in their 20s, were arrested Friday.

The chase began with reports of a burglary in Niobrara on Friday morning, then later a carjacking in the Crofton area. Investigators say the suspected pushed a person out of a minivan and sped away in it.

Sheriff’s deputies and the Nebraska State Patrol caught up with the stolen van, and the chase reached speeds of up to 100 mph on U.S. Highway 20 until the van crashed into a South Sioux City discount store. There were no serious injuries.

Justin Arrowsmith, of Arcadia, was sentenced Friday in Howard County District Court for one count of manslaughter.

Prosecutors say Arrowsmith was high on methamphetamine and other drugs when he drove in the wrong lane of Highway 92 on July 20 and hit the car of 21-year-old Derek Holt, of St. Paul. Holt died at a nearby hospital.

Judge Karin Noakes said during Arrowsmith’s sentencing that he had made little effort to receive treatment for his drug addiction.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A woman convicted of lying to police about being the victim of an anti-gay attack had acknowledged that she violated her probation and now faces possible jail time.

Charlie Rogers on Friday told Lancaster County Judge Thomas Fox that she did not report to jail on Jan. 15 to finish a 90-day jail sentence.

Fox found Rogers violated her probation. Rogers faces up to a year behind bars if the judge revokes her probation.

Rogers, a former University of Nebraska-Lincoln basketball player, was convicted of lying to police about being attacked by masked men and having anti-gay slurs carved into her skin.

Prosecutors say Rogers faked the attack because she thought it would inspire change in the treatment of gay people.

Sarpy County Inmates Face New Charges After Drugs Found

sarpy-co.-sheriffPAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a Sarpy County inmate smuggled drugs into the jail and gave some to another inmate, and both now face new drug possession charges.

The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office said a 24-year-old inmate smuggled methamphetamine into the jail when she was booked Wednesday.

The next day, deputies learned that the woman and another inmate — a 20-year-old woman — had drugs. A search turned up meth in a shampoo bottle.

In a strip search room, the 20-year-old pulled a small wrapper containing meth from a body cavity and said she got the drugs from the other inmate.

Authorities say the other inmate ate meth in an attempt to hide it, then tried to spit it out. She was still hospitalized Friday.

Judge Denies Freedom for Nebraska Man Accused of Killing Grandma

James Saylor

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A judge has denied a request for freedom by a 51-year-old man serving life for having his grandmother killed in 1984, despite the new testimony of two doctors who say she most likely died from a lung disease, not suffocation.

Lancaster County District Judge Steven Burns on Friday denied James Saylor’s motion for post-conviction relief.

Prosecutors say he hired another man, Michael Sapp, to kill 83-year-old Lena Saylor for a $25,000 inheritance. Sapp, who prosecutors say smothered the woman, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 13 to 40 years. He has since been released.

Burns said the doctors’ testimony did not outweigh other evidence in the case — including Saylor’s recorded admission that he had hired someone to kill his grandmother.

Storm Sweep Bucs With 4-2 Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm (34-14-6) finished off a sweep of the Des Moines Buccaneers (21-19-13) with a 4-2 win at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

Alec Dillon made 27 saves to earn the victory, while Tri-City got goals from Bobby Nardella, Vince Pedrie, Jake Wahlin and Cody Milan. Forward Dan Labosky added two assists in the win, and finished as the only Storm skater with a multi-point night.

Tri-City got out to a good start early and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission on Nardella’s ninth goal of the season. Assisted by Kyle Eastman, Nardella free in between the circles and put the puck over Des Moines goalie Ryland Pashovitz for his second goal of the weekend.

Now with 37 points on the season, Nardella has tied the single season mark for a Storm defenseman, set by Chris Nathe during the 2002-03 season. The Notre Dame commit has also tied Nathe’s record for assists by a defenseman with 28, set in the same season.

Three straight second period goals pushed Tri-City’s lead to 4-0, giving them control of the game. First, Pedrie ripped a shot by Pashovitz’s glove at4:38, using Chase Berger as a screen in front. Both Labosky and Kevin Kerr were awarded assists on the play.

Next, Wahlin was set up in front by Mason Appleton for his 12th tally of the season at 16:32 of the middle frame. Chris Wilkie picked up the second helper for his team leading 48th point of the season.

Milan finished off the Storm scoring for the night, scoring on a one-timer from Labosky just 30 seconds after Wahlin’s goal. Milan now has 11 goals and 23 points while appearing in all 54 Storm games this season.

Des Moines made an attempt at a comeback, getting goals from Tanner Karty and Ryan Dmowski, to cut the Storm lead to 4-2 early in the third, but Tri-City was able to hold on for the victory.

Pashovitz made 23 saves for the Buccaneers in the loss. Despite being out-shot 11-3 in the first period by Tri-City, Des Moines edged the Storm 29-27 in shots on goal in the game.

The Storm sit in first place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 74 points and six games remaining in the regular season.

Tri-City continues their six-game homestand next weekend when the Fargo Force come to town for a weekend series. Friday’s game starts at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s contest begins at 7:05.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Matthew Freytag, Wade Allison and Nolan Aibel, along with defenseman Tory Dello…
