Huskers Post 37th Straight Home Opening Win

husker baseballLincoln – The Nebraska baseball team (8-6, 0-0 Big Ten) won its 37th straight home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field with a 9-3 win over the Northern Colorado Bears (2-6, 0-0 WAC). The Huskers scored seven of their runs in the first two innings, and senior Blake Headley led the NU offensive attack with a pair of triples.

4,121 fans came out to watch the Huskers on a beautiful afternoon, as temperatures reached the low 70’s. It was the largest crowd for a home opener since 2012, when 4,169 fans came out to watch the Huskers beat Kansas State.

After freshman Garett King notched a 1-2-3 first inning in his the start of his NU career, the Husker offense gave King some run support with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Following a pair of walks to Jake Schleppenbach and Ryan Boldt, Headley delivered his first triple of the game to give the Huskers a 2-0 lead. Headley then crossed the plate on an RBI by Ben Miller.

The Huskers loaded the bases with no outs in the second and the Bears forced in a pair of runs when reliever Dylan Shiraki hit Miller and walked Luis Alvarado. Austin Darby then pushed NU’s lead to 7-0 with a two-RBI double.

The Bears cut into Nebraska’s lead with a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the eighth to make it a 7-3 game, but another triple by Headley along with Miller’s third RBI of the game in the bottom of the eighth pushed NU’s lead back to six runs at 9-3.

Colton Howell polished off the win in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts and King earned the win, his first as a Husker.

The Huskers and Bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. for the second game of their two-game series. A pair of freshmen right handers are scheduled to start tomorrow, Zack Engelken for the Huskers and Zach Heath for the Bears.

McNabb, Quick lift Kings to 5-2 Win over Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Brayden McNabb had a goal and two assists, Jonathan Quick stopped 21 shots and the Los Angeles Kings beat Colorado 5-2 on Tuesday night to end the Avalanche’s three-game win streak.

Marian Gaborik, Jeff Carter, Kyle Clifford and Jake Muzzin also scored as the reigning Stanley Cup champions crept closer to playoff contention with 16 games remaining.

Tyson Barrie and Alex Tanguay scored for the Avalanche, who dropped the first contest in a pivotal three-game homestand as their postseason aspirations dwindle.

Rookie goaltender Calvin Pickard filled in after Semyon Varlamov injured his groin over the weekend. Pickard’s night didn’t last long, with the Kings scoring three early goals and chasing him from the game at 14:15 of the first period. Reto Berra took over the rest of the way.

Wahlin Scores Four Points in 6-1 Rout of Lincoln

tcstormLINCOLN, Neb. – Jake Wahlin led the way with a four-point night as the Tri-City Storm (31-13-6) used goals from six different scorers to defeat the Lincoln Stars (15-29-5) 6-1 on Tuesday night at the Ice Box.

Chris Wilkie became the first USHL player to reach the 30-goal plateau this season with a third period tally, while Wahlin and Matthew Freytag each scored and reached the 30-point mark in the victory.

The Storm are now 6-0-1 against Lincoln this season, with the teams’ final battle coming on Friday night in Kearney.

The Stars scored their only goal at 7:07 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead when Ludvig Hoff beat Storm goalie Alec Dillon on a partial breakaway.

Dillon stopped everything that came his way after the early tally, and finished with 17 saves to earn the win.

Tri-City tied the game in the second period on Freytag’s 15th goal of the year at the 11:10 mark. The forward finished off a perfect passing play started by Nick Master at the top of the Lincoln zone. After keeping the puck in, Master found Gamez open down low. The captain then swung a pass over to Freytag, who was in perfect position for a tap-in goal.

Less than two minutes later, Wahlin got on the board, wristing a shot past the glove of Lincoln netminder Peyton Jones. Chase Berger and Wilkie were credited with assists on the tally.

Gamez was next to strike, deflecting a puck home on the Storm’s only power play of the evening. Wahlin served the pass to the forward in front, while defenseman Bobby Nardella was credited with the second assist.

Although, not on the scoresheet, Storm forward Nolan Aibel made his presence felt in the contest by dropping his gloves with Lincoln’s James LaDouce for his first career fight late in the second period.

In the third period, Wilkie made it 4-1 with his 30th of the year from Wahlin and Berger at 6:16.

Then it was defenseman Tory Dello who got in on the act, scoring his first goal of the season on a shot from the point. Assists on his tally went to Nardella and forward Christopher Brown.

Finally Tri-City made it 6-1 on Chase Berger’s eighth of the season with assists from Wahlin and defenseman Jason Krych.

With the win, Tri-City earned two more points in the Western Conference standings and are now just a single point behind the Sioux City Musketeers for the top spot in both the conference and the USHL.

The Storm and Lincoln will finish off their eight-game season series on Friday night in Kearney at the Viaero Event Center at 7:30 p.m.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Kyle Eastman, Mason Appleton and Joel Herbert…

Broncos Sign Tight Ends Virgil Green, Owen Daniels

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos moved on from Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas by signing Virgil Green and Owen Daniels to three-year deals Tuesday.

Thomas is the only tight end in NFL history to catch a dozen touchdown passes in consecutive seasons and Green has just one TD catch in his four-year career.

Yet, in new coach Gary Kubiak’s system, tight ends have to be good blockers in the run game, and that’s Green’s forte and Thomas’ shortfall.

Daniels, a two-time Pro Bowler, has played all nine of his seasons for Kubiak, first in Houston and then in Baltimore last season, when he caught 48 passes for 527 yards and four touchdowns.

Also Tuesday, the Broncos re-signed linebacker Steven Johnson to a one-year deal.

Millard West Player Statuses in Question after MIP Citations

Millard West Wildcats LogoOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Millard West could be without one or more of its varsity basketball players when it plays in the state basketball tournament in Lincoln this week.

One 18-year-old member of the team was among some 70 people cited by police for minor in possession at a party in west Omaha on Saturday night. Police did not identify all of the people ticketed.

Millard West plays Omaha Creighton Prep on Thursday. Millard Public Schools policy calls for a student to be held out of extracurricular activities for 19 days when he or she commits an offense off school grounds.

Millard West athletic director Chris Loofe would not say Tuesday how many players, if any, would be suspended. Loofe said that “will be answered Thursday night when the team takes the floor.”

Nebraska Net Tax Receipts Higher Than Expected in February

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says Nebraska’s net tax collections last month were nearly 10 percent higher than expected.

The Department of Revenue announced Tuesday that the state received about $284 million in February. The certified forecast for the month was roughly $260 million.

Net individual income tax receipts were nearly 12 percent higher than expected. Net corporate income tax receipts were 23 percent higher and net miscellaneous tax receipts nearly 71 percent higher.

Net tax receipts for the current fiscal year are so far more than 2 percent higher than the certified forecast of nearly $2.6 billion.

The comparisons are based on the report made by the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board.

Nebraska Corrections May Consolidate Mental Health Services

ne-department-of-correctionsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s corrections director is reviewing a plan that would concentrate more mental health services at a state prison in Lincoln.

Director Scott Frakes told lawmakers Tuesday that having mental health services scattered throughout the state isn’t an effective use of resources.

The plan would increase the number of residential mental health beds at the Lincoln Correctional Center, while reducing beds at the state prison in Tecumseh.

Frakes says the Department of Correctional Services needs to house offenders based on their treatment needs so it’s easier for them to access services. The state has struggled to fill mental-health specialist jobs outside of Lincoln and Omaha.

Frakes says it’s too early to know whether he needs money that was set aside for behavioral health services, an assertion that some lawmakers challenged.

Nebraska Panel Advances Medicaid ‘Redesign” Measure

medicaidLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new effort to expand Medicaid coverage in Nebraska is headed to a full debate in the Legislature.

The Health and Human Services Committee voted 5-2 on Tuesday to advance the Medicaid Redesign Act to the floor.

The lead sponsor, Sen. Kathy Campbell of Lincoln, has said this year’s version would help the state uncover more efficient ways to provide health care coverage.

The bill would require the state to apply for a federal waiver to develop its own Medicaid plan, as other states reluctant about the expansion have done.

Two previous efforts to expand Medicaid have failed due to opposition from conservative lawmakers. The bill is still likely to face resistance from those lawmakers as well as Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts.

NP Woman Accused of Punching Husband in Front of Children

A 40-year-old North Platte woman is facing a domestic violence charge after she allegedly punched her husband in front of a child.

At around 11:21 p.m., on Monday, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to a residence in the 900 block of West 5th Street.

Upon arrival, officers met with Christy Amos, and her husband.

It was alleged that an argument took place when Christy, who was intoxicated, decided to leave the home in a vehicle to get more alcohol.

The husband told officers that when he tried to stop her from driving drunk, she punched him in the face.  Officers say the husband had bruising consistent with being punched in the face.

According to police, at least one child was in the room when the assault took place, but three children were present in the home.

As a result, Amos was placed under arrest and charged with domestic assault and child abuse.

She was transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center and jailed.

Sales Tax Bill for Nebraska Farmland Voted Down in Committee

farmlandLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill that would have imposed a sales tax on Nebraska farmland to pay for property tax relief has stalled in a legislative committee.

The Revenue Committee voted 5-1 against the measure on Monday, with two senators abstaining. Committee members are sorting through various proposals designed to lower property taxes.

The legislation by Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus would have generated nearly $82 million in the next fiscal year. Virtually all of that money would go into a property tax credit fund for owners of agricultural land.

The tax would only have applied when land is sold. Schumacher says it would have generated substantial property tax relief for farmers and ranchers, but several senators opposed the new sales tax.
