A North Platte man is facing a felony firearms charge after allegedly making delusional claims to police.

Just after midnight on March 5, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to a residence in the 900 block of West 11th Street.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, this was the fourth time in three days that officers had responded to the residence.

Brown said the resident, 36-year-old Joshua Crewdson, reported that there were children inside and outside of his residence, and there was also a group of bikers that were threatening him.

Responding officers found no one on the property during this call or the previous calls.

While inside the home, officers observed a loaded Winchester model 70-7 mm rifle.

Brown said Crewdson is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms.

As a result, Crewdson was placed under arrest and charged with being a felony in possession of a firearm.

Brown said it is not believed that Crewdson was under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs.

A 34-year-old North Platte man is facing multiple felony charges after he and some cohorts allegedly assaulted a man with a baseball bat.

At around 6:45 p.m., on March 3, officers with the North Platte Police Department responded to a residence in the 2200 block of East D Street on the report of an assault.

A 54-year-old male alleged that four subjects had burst into his bedroom and began punching him and striking him with a baseball bat.

Witnesses told officers that all four subjects had fled the scene and the victim was being transported to Great Plains Health for treatment.

According to Officer Rodney Brown, the victim told officers that Justin Martino, his 35-year-old brother Joseph, 32-year-old Kenneth Degeler and an unidentified man entered the bedroom and immediately began beating him.

The man’s wife had removed their daughter from the room just prior to the men barging in.

Brown said there were also others inside the residence at the time of the assault, including a 31-year-old female and two male children, ages eight and two.

Following further investigation, officers determined that there was probable cause to arrest the four men, and charge them with felony assault and child abuse.

On the morning of March 4, Justin Martino contacted the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and turned himself in.

He was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center and charged with felony 1st degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony and two counts of child abuse.

Brown said the investigation into the other three suspects is ongoing.

The victim’s injuries were non-life threatening.

Peyton Manning Has Some Unfinished Business

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning will take a physical and sign his revised contract at Broncos headquarters Thursday, then head home until the Broncos reconvene April 13 for the start of offseason workouts.

Then, it’s time to adapt to new coach Gary Kubiak’s West Coast offense and continue his pursuit of a second Super Bowl trophy.

Weeks of speculation about the five-time MVP’s future ended Wednesday with word that he’s returning for an 18th season in the NFL and fourth in Denver.

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that Manning will take a $4 million pay cut, from $19 million to $15 million, but that he can make it all back through performance incentives. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement of the deal.

Landeskog leads Avs to 3-1 Win over Penguins

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists, Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat Pittsburgh 3-1 on Wednesday night to halt the Penguins’ four-game winning streak.

Jarome Iginla scored 13 seconds into the second period and Nathan MacKinnon, wearing a shield to protect his broken nose, added a goal with his skate for Colorado on a night when Alex Tanguay played in his 1,000th NHL game.

Evgeni Malkin scored the lone goal for the Penguins. The Avalanche are 16-5-6 against Pittsburgh since moving to Denver in 1995-96.

Varlamov played in his 20th straight game and improved to 10-8-2 during the streak. He stymied Sidney Crosby and Malkin — two of the NHL’s top scorers — for most of the game, before allowing Malkin’s goal off a rebound midway through the third period.

Illinois Holds Off Nebraska for Badly Needed Win, 69-57

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballCHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Rayvonte Rice scored 23 and led Illinois to a badly needed win over Nebraska Wednesday, 69-57.

The Illini (19-11, 9-8 Big Ten) have won two straight as they look for a way into the NCAA tournament.

Nebraska (13-16, 5-12) has lost seven games in a row and nine of its last 10.

Rice had a quiet six-point first half but scored 17 in the second 20 minutes. That included seven straight over a key stretch midway through the half that brought Illinois back from a 40-39 deficit to a 46-42 lead.

He drilled home a long 3-pointer with 1:35 left in the game to give Illinois a 59-50 lead.

Kendrick Nunn and Leron Black added 11 each for Illinois.

AP Source: Manning Returning for 18th NFL Season

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Peyton Manning will return for a fourth season in Denver and 18th in the NFL.

Manning will reduce his salary from $19 million to $15 million in 2015, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement.

However, he can make up all of the $4 million pay cut by reaching certain performance benchmarks.

Manning will take his physical and sign his revised contract Thursday, then return April 13 for team conditioning.

The five-time MVP mulled retirement after the Broncos’ playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts. But he determined he still had the health and hunger to keep playing at age 39.

Goldschmidt Back, De La Rosa Debuts as D-backs beat Rockies

colorado-rockiesSCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt walked and struck out in his first major league action since a broken hand cut short his 2014 season, and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 Wednesday.

Rockies prospect Jon Gray fanned Goldschmidt with a 97 mph fastball in the third inning. The two-time All-Star drew a walk against Rockies starter Jordan Lyles in the first.

Goldschmidt was sharp at first base a day after he singled in his only at-bat in an exhibition against Arizona State. He had been out since getting hit by a pitch on his left hand in August.

Rubby De La Rosa threw two scoreless innings in his Arizona debut on his 26th birthday, getting out of a second-inning jam when Rockies newcomer Nick Hundley flied to right.

Lyles and Gray combined to throw four scoreless innings for Colorado in its spring opener. D.J. LeMahieu went 2 for 2.

Nebraska Lawmakers Advance Black-Tailed Prairie Dog Repeal

prairie-dogLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A prairie dog management law criticized by Nebraska wildlife advocates could be in jeopardy.

Nebraska lawmakers voted 32-12 on Wednesday to advance a bill that would repeal the 2012 law.

The law gives counties the option to control the spread of black-tailed prairie dogs when a landowner’s neighbors complain. Only Sheridan County has taken advantage of its provisions. The animals are an ecologically important native species that some ranchers view as pests.

Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha says he introduced the repeal measure because the current law is too vague and runs afoul of property rights.

Black-tailed prairie dogs are widespread in parts of northwest Nebraska, where they dig holes in ranchland. Wildlife groups support the repeal, while counties and ranching groups oppose it.
