Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ Tops Box Office with $19.1 Million

box-officeNEW YORK (AP) — Will Smith’s caper “Focus” dethroned “Fifty Shades of Grey” at the box office, but the film’s modest $19.1 million opening still left questions about the drawing power of the once unstoppable star.

According to studio estimates Sunday, Warner Bros.’ “Focus” easily topped all competitors on a weekend with little competition at the multiplexes. In second place was the Colin Firth spy thriller “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” which made $11.8 million in its third week of release.

After two weeks atop the box office, “Fifty Shades of Grey” slid to fourth with an estimated $10.9 million for Universal Pictures.

The weekend’s only other new wide release, Relativity’s horror film “The Lazarus Effect,” opened in fifth place with $10.6 million.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The crowd at this year’s Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting is likely to top 40,000 as the company marks 50 years of Warren Buffett’s leadership.

In his annual letter, Buffett urged shareholders to check out Airbnb’s website if they are having trouble finding one of Omaha’s 14,000 hotel rooms.

Buffett says the Airbnb is making a special effort to sign up people in Omaha willing to rent part or all of their homes.

Buffett has said he hopes Airbnb will help make it easier on shareholders who don’t want to pay for the three-night minimum stays some hotels require.

Berkshire also plans to offer shareholders a second day of shopping in the exhibit hall filled with some of the conglomerate’s products.

Kearney School Administrator Assaulted by Student

kearney-public-schoolsKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Kearney police are trying to determine whether a high school student assaulted an administrator.

Kearney school district Superintendent Brian Maher said Assistant Principal Kevin Madsen was assaulted Friday when he removed a student from study hall.

Police helped school officials deal with the student. Madsen was examined by the school nurse but was able to continue working.

Police and school officials are investigating the incident to determine how it happened.

School board president Jon Watts says the district will try to learn from the incident before deciding if changes need to be made.

Lincoln Woman Arrested for Stealing Dog from Ex-Boyfriend

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska woman has been charged with breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s home and stealing the dog they once shared.

The 21-year-old woman and her 23-year-old fiancee were both charged Friday.

Lincoln Police officer Katie Flood says the ex-boyfriend returned home Thursday to find his sliding glass door had been forced open, and his blind and deaf dachshund named Charlii was missing.

The ex-boyfriend told police that his ex-girlfriend had recently challenged his ownership of Charlii even though he had been caring for the dog ever since they broke up two years ago.

When police contacted the woman she denied stealing the dog until Charlii wandered out from the back of the apartment.

3rd Child Dies After Carbon Monoxide Leak in Ohio Home

carbon-monoxideTROY, Ohio (AP) — A third child has died after being found in an Ohio home where there were high levels of carbon monoxide.

13-year-old Jakia Jones died Sunday.

Her cousins 14-year-old Dionanna Bishop and 13-year-old Dejah Bishop died Friday after a relative found them unconscious inside a home in Troy. Her 8-year-old brother, Jahari Jones, is in critical condition.

Police say a furnace caused the leak of carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas created when some fuels are burned. The relative reported to police the children had been sick for days. The children lived with their grandmother, who was hospitalized with pneumonia Friday.

An attorney for a couple who own the home says they weren’t aware of furnace problems and didn’t know children lived there.

Nebraska Looking at Ways to Lure Out-of-State Tourists

nebraska tourismLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill under review by a legislative committee could boost out-of-state tourism to some of Nebraska’s best but little-known attractions.

The measure by Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln would offer $1 million dollar grants to four sites demonstrating the greatest potential to draw visitors to the state.

Morfeld says the grant money could apply to nonprofit, state or county entities to develop education and access to existing attractions.

Tourism is Nebraska’s third-largest industry, but officials say the state has difficulties with national visibility and interest.

Morfeld says he is working with the committee to draft an amendment addressing senators’ concerns about the financial stability of potential grant recipients.

Storm Sweep Sioux City With 5-1 Victory

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Cody Milan scored twice and the Tri-City Storm (29-12-6) defeated the Sioux City Musketeers (31-13-5) 5-1 at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night to earn a sweep of the weekend and take the six-game regular season series between the top teams in the Western Conference, four games to two.

Also scoring in the victory for Tri-City was Matthew Freytag, Nick Master and Conner Valesano, while goaltender Jared Rutledge earned his third win of the season over Sioux City, making 29 saves.

After a scoreless first period, the Storm took the lead at 11:54 of the second on Freytag’s 14th goal of the season. Tri-City captain Garrett Gamez found the Wisconsin commit in front of the Sioux City net and the forward was able to control a bouncing puck and bat it into the far side of the net to make it 1-0.

Less than three minutes later, Milan made it 2-0 with his first strike of the night. Defenseman Mattias Goransson got the puck to the front of the Musketeer net where it hit Dan Labosky’s stick and went right to Milan, who backhanded it home for the 2-0 lead.

Goransson was credited with the second assist on both of the Storm’s second period goals and Tri-City went into the second intermission ahead by two.

A penalty to Sioux City’s Sebastian Repo that came five seconds into the final period put the Storm on the power play and Nick Master capitalized, scoring his 20th goal of the season.

Master has now scored in five consecutive Tri-City home games, and has goals in seven of the last eight played at the Viaero Event Center. Assists on the tally were credited to both Christopher Brown and Bobby Nardella.

The Storm held their 3-0 lead until the final minutes, when Musketeer forward Sam Kurker scored with an extra attacker to get Sioux City on the board.

Rutledge’s shutout bid ended with less than a minute and a half to go in the contest before empty net goals by both Milan and Valesano for Tri-City.

The Storm outshot Sioux City 38-30 in the contest, as Musketeers’ netminder Collin Olson made 33 saves while suffering the loss.

Tri-City is still in second place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 64 points, but the Storm gained three points on Sioux City in the weekend series and is three points back of the top spot in the west.

The Storm will now travel to Fargo for their first meetings with the Force this season. The first meeting is Thursday night, with the series concluding on Friday. Both games will start at 7:05.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel and Kyle Eastman, along with defenseman Jason Krych…
