NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) — Staff members at Arbor Day Farm have been busily packaging and shipping thousands of seedlings to help others celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day.
April is the busiest month for the Nebraska City farm, which is owned by the Arbor Day Foundation City, due to the volume of trees ordered from them for the two environmentally friendly holidays.
According to Adam Howard, the farm’s director of mission engagement, about 250,000 gift seedlings will be packaged and shipped this year. About half of the work will be completed this month.
Howard says about 2.5 million trees are shipped annually to the foundation’s 1 million members.
Many of the 12 species of seedlings that are packed and shipped are grown on Arbor Day Farm. If demand exceeds supply, the foundation relies on outside suppliers.
