LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Disabled Nebraskans and their families could save for their future without being penalized under a bill advanced by lawmakers.

Senators gave the measure initial approval on Tuesday with a 43-0 vote.

The legislation would allow adults with intellectual disabilities and their families to place as much as $100,000 into special savings accounts similar to 529 college savings plans.

Under current law, disabled adults can lose Medicaid coverage and Social Security if they accumulate more than $2,000 in assets. The plans would help them save for medical, housing and educational needs without counting against that limit.

Sen. Kate Bolz of Lincoln says her bill would place Nebraska among the first states with such accounts. Federal legislation allowing states to create the accounts was signed in 2014.
