Gardner, Yankees rough up Guthrie, Royals 14-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Brett Gardner, Brian McCann and Chase Headley homered during an eight-run first inning and the New York Yankees quickly erased the memory of a lost weekend, romping past the AL Central-leading Kansas City Royals 14-1 Monday.

Stephen Drew added another three-run homer off a favorite foil of the Yankees, Jeremy Guthrie (4-3), before the team made an out in the second.

Slade Heathcott hit his first major league homer in the seventh as New York, coming off a sweep by Texas, snapped a six-game skid. The Yankees won for just the second time in 12 games, beating the team that began the day with the best record in the majors.

Nathan Eovaldi (4-1) pitched with runners on in all but two of his seven-plus innings. Working on five days’ rest, he allowed eight hits and a run.

Reds lost 9th straight, Arenado leads Rockies to 5-4 win

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds lost their ninth straight game Monday as Nolan Arenado homered, had three hits and drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning off Aroldis Chapman that gave the Colorado Rockies a 5-4 victory.

This is the Reds’ longest losing streak since they dropped 11 straight in June 1998 under manager Jack McKeon.

Arenado had a pair of singles and a solo homer off Reds starter Jason Marquis. He then helped the Rockies pull it out against Chapman (2-3), who came in for the ninth.

Charlie Blackmon opened with a walk and took third on D.J. Lemahieu’s single. Blackmon scored easily on Arenado’s fly to center fielder Billy Hamilton, whose throw was off-target.

Rafael Betancourt (2-1) retired the four batters he faced. John Axford gave up a walk in the ninth while getting his seventh save in as many chances.

12 People Missing in Texas Floods

severe-weatherSAN MARCOS, Tx. (AP)–Authorities say a dozen people are missing after flash flooding along the Blanco River in Central Texas that damaged hundreds of homes.

Kristi Wyatt, a spokeswoman for the city of San Marcos, said Monday that 12 people are now missing after the flooding Sunday, when three people were reported missing. Wyatt says she didn’t immediately have more information.

Former Nueces County Commissioner Joe McComb says his son’s wife and their two children are among the missing.

McComb tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that his 36-year-old son, Jonathan, is hospitalized in San Antonio with multiple injuries after a house he was staying at was knocked off its foundation and carried down the raging river Sunday. It struck a bridge and then began breaking up.

The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd says five members of two families from the Corpus Christi church also were in the house and are missing.

Cicadas to Emerge in Some Parts of Eastern Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — It’s that time of the century again, when cicadas (sih-KAYE’-duhs) emerge and raise their racket.

This year the Kansas brood, which experts say is one of 12 cicada broods across the country, will come to adult life in part of eastern Nebraska, including Cass, Cuming, Douglas, Johnson, Otoe, Pawnee, Sarpy and Saunders counties.

Some species emerge every year, but others follow life cycles of three, seven, 13 and 17 years — all prime numbers.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln bug expert Leon Higley said the theory is that cicadas have life cycles corresponding to prime numbers so predator species have difficulty synchronizing their life cycles with the cicada life cycles.

WOOD RIVER, Neb. (AP) — A small herd of purebred bison in south-central Nebraska has been growing with the births of at least six calves so far this spring.

The animals have been adjusting to their new home on more than 1,000 acres of tallgrass prairie on Crane Trust land southwest of Grand Island.

The 41 bison — also known as buffalo — were trucked in from Rimrock Ranch near Crawford in the Nebraska Panhandle in January. Trust officials don’t know how many of the 12 mature cows and five heifers will give birth and add to the herd this year.

Experts say that of the 500,000 bison in North America, about 5,000 are genetically pure, descended from bison that have never been bred with cattle.
