Nebraska Senators Urge EPA to Back Biofuels Industry

epaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska senators are pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to hold its support for renewable fuels when drafting rules that could limit amounts of ethanol blended with gasoline for fuel.

Forty-two of Nebraska’s 49 senators signed a letter sent to EPA administrator Gina McCarthy Thursday, urging her to consider the impact of modifying the market for the ethanol industry that contributes $5 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Supporters worry oil companies are lobbying to decrease the amounts of ethanol required in fuel under the Renewable Fuel Standard.

The letter says the Nebraska ethanol industry employs more than 1,300 workers and supports 3,300 other jobs.

The EPA is expected to release oil industry draft rules for 2016 on June 1.

Harlow says the boats his department deployed weren’t needed because the girl was found on a shore.

Wind Energy Company: Proposed Lancaster County Noise Rules Too Restrictive

windmillLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A company says noise rules being drafted in Lancaster County are so restrictive they would discourage wind farms from being developed there.

The Oregon-based company, Volkswind, wants to develop a 50-turbine farm in Lancaster and Gage counties.

A Volkswind project engineer said Thursday the likelihood of violating those proposed rules would be so great that wind energy companies would choose to build in other counties.

A Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department official says the regulations are based on recent studies looking at the potential health impacts of the constant, percussive sound made by turbines, which can cause sleep disturbance.

eggsDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Egg prices surged to a record on Friday, a month after bird flu was first detected in the chicken flock in Iowa, the nation’s leading egg producer.

Midwest large eggs reached $2.32 a dozen.

Rick Brown, a senior vice president for Urner Barry, a commodity market analyst says that’s a 95 percent increase in the month since bird flu first hit Iowa chickens. He says the previous record was $2.27 set on Dec 4.

Eggs used to make ice cream, mayonnaise and other processed foods set a record Friday of $2.13 a dozen, up 238 percent from the selling price of April 22 around the date Iowa’s first chicken farm tested positive.

More than 21 million of Iowa’s egg-laying hens have been killed.

Court: Nebraska Wrongly Ended Girl’s Home Care Benefit

ne-supreme-courtOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court says the state’s Department of Health and Human Services was wrong to end Medicaid benefits that had helped a woman care for her profoundly disabled daughter at home for more than a decade.

In November 2012, the department ended the benefits that provided such services as nursing and respite care for a girl listed in the ruling only at Brayden O. The department reasoned that the girl no longer met the state’s qualifications to receive care in a nursing facility, which is necessary to receive the home-care benefits.

But on Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court sided with the girl’s mother and lawyers, who said the department failed to follow its own policies in determining whether Brayden was disabled enough to go to a nursing facility.
