Nebraska Mandatory Minimum Sentences Stuck in Place for Now

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill to limit mandatory minimum sentences for crimes like robbery, assault on a police officer and certain drug offenses will not pass in the Nebraska Legislature this year.

The bill’s sponsor said Wednesday that he will not spend any more time on the bill this year because it lacks the support required to override an expected gubernatorial veto.

The measure by Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha has been touted as a way to reduce prison crowding.

But opponents say that proposed policy was not part of the Council of State Government’s recommendations to repair Nebraska’s corrections department. Gov. Pete Ricketts says the bill would compromise public safety.

Authorities Say Driver in 8-Vehicle Nebraska Crash Was Distracted

lancaster-county-sherifftLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say the driver of a semitrailer that started an eight-vehicle crash in eastern Nebraska was distracted prior to the incident.

Lancaster County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jeff Bliemeister says 56-year-old Nathan Quigley, of Sioux City, has been cited for careless driving in connection to the Tuesday afternoon crash on U.S. 77.

Bliemeister says Quigley wasn’t paying attention and didn’t see that other drivers had stopped for a red light. The semitrailer hit the back of a vehicle, causing a chain of crashes.

Three people were sent to a hospital. Two were discharged Tuesday and one remained hospitalized Wednesday morning.

According to court documents, a CPA report says $56,500 was missing from Sandstone’s bank deposits over the period of January 2011 to January 2014.

Governor Ricketts Approves New Two-Year State Budget

economyLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts has signed a new two-year budget that includes $408 million in state money for property tax reductions.

The Republican governor announced Wednesday that he approved the $8.7 billion package without vetoes. He says the budget met his goals of increasing property tax relief and slowing state spending increases.

The budget includes an increase in state aid for property tax reductions, education and prison expenses. The $408 million approved will go to Nebraska’s property tax credit fund, which uses state money to offset local property taxes.

Ricketts says he was pleased with the overall budget, calling it a good step toward sustainable tax relief.

Lawmakers approved the budget last week.

Better Access for Handicapped Desired for Uber, Lyft

Lyft ridesharingLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Some Lincoln residents want ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft to provide better access for people with wheelchairs.

The companies require drivers to accommodate riders with collapsible wheelchairs.

But Lyft’s website directs people whose wheelchairs won’t fold into a trunk to seek another transportation service for a ride.

Uber has partnered with other groups to provide wheelchair-accessible transportation in eight U.S. cities, but it hasn’t announced plans to do so in Lincoln or Omaha.

Representatives for Uber and Lyft say the companies are working to make their services available to as many people as possible. Both companies moved into Nebraska last year.

Local YMCA Wants to Buy Old Norfolk Auditorium for $1

ymcaNORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — A local YMCA wants to buy the old Norfolk city auditorium, saying it needs the space for its gymnastics program.

The executive director of the Norfolk Family YMCA told the City Council on Monday that even though there’s costs attached to fixing the auditorium that’s more than 75 years old, it’s a better alternative than seeking another site that could cost up to $2.1 million.

City figures show it would cost around $100,000 in capital improvements in the near future to keep the building viable. It doesn’t include the $41,000 needed each year for maintenance, upkeep and heating costs.

The YMCA wants to purchase the building for $1.

Teacher Suspended After Showing ‘Fifty Shades’ to Students

fifty-shades-of-greyROMNEY, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia teacher has been suspended without pay for showing part of the erotic movie “Fifty Shades of Grey” to students as a reward for good work.

The county school board unanimously voted this week to suspend Hampshire High School health occupations instructor Kristie Long for the rest of the school year.

The newspaper says students asked Long to show the movie and one brought the DVD to school last week. An assistant principal shut down the movie after 10 minutes after being alerted about it by another adult.

Long told school officials she didn’t know what the movie was about.

The first movie opened this year on Valentine’s Day weekend and became one of the biggest R-rated openings ever.
