Rural Nebraska Schoolhouse Closing After 45 Years

burwell-neBURWELL, Neb. (AP) — A rural one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska is set to close after 45 years.

The District 70 School in Garfield County will close Wednesday. The Burwell Public Schools board decided in January to close the school at the end of this school year.

District 70 was created in 1970 after four other rural schools were consolidated. Over the years, the school shrank to one teacher, a paraeducator and five students in grades four through six.

Two of the students will travel to Burwell to attend school next year, prompting parents to send their siblings as well. This partly contributed to the board decision to close the school.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska reserve defensive back Boaz Joseph has been fined $300 for marijuana possession.

Joseph had a charge for possession of drug paraphernalia dropped during his sentencing Tuesday in Lancaster County Court.

University police last month found marijuana in a tobacco tin in Joseph’s room at his Lincoln apartment. Officers were there to execute a search warrant in connection with an unrelated fraud investigation. Two other people were ticketed for having drugs and paraphernalia.

Coach Mike Riley has not commented on the case.

Joseph had been ticketed last June for bike theft in Lincoln. That case was dismissed in December after he completed a pre-trial diversion program.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A domestic assault charge against a former University of Nebraska football coach has been dismissed.

Online court records filed Monday say Rick Kaczenski (kuh-ZIHN’-skee) decided to participate in the Community Corrections Diversion Program, so Lancaster County prosecutors in Lincoln agreed to dismiss the misdemeanor charge. The charge can be refiled if he doesn’t complete the program.

In March Lincoln officers were sent to a Lincoln home to check a report about a domestic argument. Officers found a woman with a cut to her forehead and scratches to her face and neck. Officers say Kaczenski had thrown a picture frame at the 33-year-old woman.

The 40-year-old Kaczenski was the Huskers’ defensive line coach from 2012 through 2014. He joined Nebraska after five years as the University of Iowa’s defensive line coach.

Georgia Teacher Accused of Letting Students Have Sex

schoolSTONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) — An Atlanta-area teacher has been arrested after a parent complained he allowed middle school students to have sex in a storage unit in his classroom.

Multiple news outlets report 25-year-old Quentin Wright, a math teacher at The Champion School in Stone Mountain, was taken into custody Tuesday. He has been charged with four misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

An arrest warrant says Wright arranged times with students when the classroom would be empty and gave them condoms.

The investigation began after a mother said she found text messages between Wright and her son.

A DeKalb County Schools spokesman says they are cooperating with the District Attorney’s Office and Wright has been removed from the classroom.

It is unclear if he has a lawyer.

Dale Edward Jennings

Dale Edward Jennings, 84, of North Platte, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2015 at Great Plains Health hospital in North Platte.
Dale was born to Edward V. and Mary E. Miller Jennings in Hershey, NE, on March 22, 1931 at the home of John and Rose Keeney. He went home to join his older sisters, Nettie and Bonnie, at the family ranch located on the Birdwood Creek north of Sarben. They later moved to the Stone Ranch west of Sutherland, where his sister Dixie and brother Ralph were born. The family moved to North Platte in March of 1936.
Dale attended McKinley Grade School, Franklin Jr. High School and graduated from North Platte High School in 1949. In December 1951, he joined the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War, flying 52 combat missions as an air crew member. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed in Texas, Korea, and Washington, D.C. On June 2, 1955 he married Joanne Black of Tryon, NE, and they spent their first six months of married life in Washington, D.C. while Dale was stationed at Bolling AFB. Following his discharge in December 1955, they made their home in North Platte. Dale hired on with Union Pacific Railroad in August 1956 and worked as a yard switchman, new student instructor, and brakeman on train runs to Cheyenne, WY. They built a home just south of North Platte on Highway 83 near the NPPD supply canal and lived there until moving to his current address. He retired from the railroad April 1, 1992.
Dale and Joanne greatly enjoyed the RV life-traveling, camping, visiting friends and family and enjoying the outdoors. They had a small cabin at Martin Bay on Lake McConaughy and had purchased a residence in Brownsville, TX for a place to spend away from the cold of Nebraska winters. Dale was a member of the Union Pacific Old Timers Club, the Moose Club, and the VFW.
Dale is survived by his sister Dixie Greenwood and brother Ralph Jennings both of North Platte; sisters-in-law, Joyce Wilkins of Kearney and Jerry (Gary) Neal all of North Platte; good friend, Joanne Anderson of North Platte; and an extensive extended family of nieces and nephews whom he had “adopted” as his own.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joanne; sisters, Nettie Frost and Bonnie Neeley; sister-in-law, Janis Nielsen; brothers-in-law, Buddy Wilkins, Darwin Nielson, Larry Greenwood, and Bob Frost; nephew, Steve Frost; great-nephew, Cody Wilkins; great-niece, Kylee Neal; stepbrother-in-law, Rick Black; stepmother-in-law, Leah Black; and god-son, Zachary Peters.
Memorials may be made in his name and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com.
An informal celebration of Dale’s life will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home. Private family burial will be in the Miller Cemetery. Visitation will be noon until 9:00 p.m. Thursday at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
