Pujols, Trout star as Angels beat skidding Rockies 2-1 in 11; Weiss Hospitalized

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mike Trout made two spectacular defensive plays in extra innings, Albert Pujols hit a game-ending sacrifice fly in the 11th, and the Los Angeles Angels sent the Colorado Rockies to their 11th consecutive loss, 2-1 Wednesday night.

Pujols’ bases-loaded fly to left easily scored pinch-runner Taylor Featherston for the Angels, who climbed back to .500 (17-17) with their sixth win in eight games to close a nine-game homestand.

Trout leaped at the wall in the 10th to take a homer away from Troy Tulowitzki, making a potentially difficult catch look routine.

In the 11th, the AL MVP made a running catch on Daniel Descalso’s fly and uncorked a perfect throw to get Carlos Gonzalez at the plate. Umpire Phil Cuzzi initially called Gonzalez safe, but it was overturned by video review.

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss had an appendectomy Wednesday night following two days of stomach discomfort.

A club spokesman said Wednesday that the 51-year-old Weiss left Angel Stadium right before batting practice with athletic trainer Keith Dugger to get a follow-up exam. He is expected to be hospitalized until Thursday afternoon, but no timetable has been established on when he will rejoin the club. Bench coach Tom Runnells will guide the team in Weiss’ absence.

The Rockies begin a four-game series up the freeway at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night.

This is Weiss’ third season with the Rockies, Weiss was the 1988 AL rookie of the year with the Oakland Athletics, and spent four of his 14 big league seasons playing shortstop for the Rockies, who were managed then by current Angels hitting coach Don Baylor.

Another Angels coach with a connection to Weiss is Alfredo Griffin, who was traded by the A’s in September 1987 because they felt that Weiss could handle the shortstop job on a regular basis.

Fielder, Choo homer as Rangers beat Royals 5-2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Prince Fielder homered and had three hits, Shin-Soo Choo hit a leadoff home run for the second straight game and the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 Wednesday night.

Choo pulled a 98 mph fastball from Yordano Ventura into the right-field seats, and Fielder gave the Rangers a 4-0 lead with a two-run homer in the second inning.

Texas rookie Delino DeShields had three hits, including his first triple, and scored twice.

Yovani Gallardo (3-5) took a shutout into the seventh inning before allowing run-scoring doubles by Kendrys Morales and Salvador Perez. Gallardo snapped a four-start losing streak that matched a career worst.

The first five Texas hitters reached against Ventura (2-3), who gave up at least four runs for the fourth time in five starts.

Nebraska Licenses Bill for Deferred Youth Faces Filibuster

ne-legislature-13LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bipartisan effort to allow Nebraska driver’s licenses for deferred-action youths won’t pass without a fight.

Opponents mounted a filibuster Wednesday against a bill that would authorize licenses for immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally as children, but allowed to stay under an Obama administration directive.

Most lawmakers support the proposal, as do prominent ranching and business groups and conservatives such as Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert. Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha, the lead sponsor, says the legislation would help those youth contribute to the economy.

A handful of senators argued that their constituents oppose the measure, and called it unfair to those who immigrated legally.

Nebraska is the only state that still denies licenses to deferred-action youths. A vote is expected Thursday.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who stepped down from daily duties last summer as he battled Alzheimer’s disease, has been selected for the team’s ring of fame that he created in 1984.

Team president and CEO Joe Ellis said he visited Bowlen with the news Wednesday.

Bowlen is the only owner in NFL history to win 300 games, counting playoffs, in a 30-year span.

Bowlen will be honored before the Broncos’ Sunday night game against Green Bay on Nov. 1.

Ellis said he hopes the next move is for Bowlen to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a contributor like 2015 inductees Ron Wolf and Bill Polian.

Nebraska Governor Declares Emergency to Help Battle Bird Flu

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts declared an emergency to make sure state agencies have what they need to battle bird flu in the state.

Earlier this week, agriculture officials confirmed the contagious disease’s presence in a flock of 1.7 million chickens in Dixon County, Nebraska. Ricketts issued his declaration Wednesday.

Several state agencies are working to quarantine the farm where the disease was found and carry out the destruction of the infected birds.

Nebraska Agriculture Director Greg Ibach says the declaration will give him additional resources to respond to the disease outbreak.

Officials say the bird flu doesn’t represent a significant health risk to humans.

Lincoln – Nebraska basketball’s non-conference schedule for next season received a boost Wednesday afternoon, as the Big Ten and ESPN announced that the Huskers will take on Miami in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The matchup is slated for Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tipoff time and television information will be announced at a later date.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the three-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioners Cup. All 14 games will also be available via WatchESPN.

The Hurricanes went 25-13 during the 2014-15 season in overtime and lost in the championship game of the NIT Tournament. Jim Larrañaga’s Hurricanes, who finished sixth in the ACC last season, return their top four scorers, including senior guard Sheldon McClellan, who averaged 14.5 points per game as a junior. Senior point guard Angel Rodriguez (11.9 ppg, 3.9 apg and 1.8 spg) and senior center Tonye Jekiri (8.6 ppg, 9.9 rpg and 1.4 bpg) also are back for the Hurricanes. Miami posted road wins at NCAA champion Duke and Florida in 2014-15 and were ranked as high as 15th nationally at one point during last season.

This will be the second time that the Huskers and Hurricanes have faced off the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. In 2013, Nebraska posted a 60-49 victory over Miami, also at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Huskers are 4-1 all-time against Miami dating back to the 1951-52 season.

The Huskers have played well in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge under Tim Miles, going 3-0 in that stretch, including a road win over Florida State last season. Nebraska’s .750 winning percentage in the event is the best of any Big Ten school, as NU has gone 3-1 since joining the Big Ten.

The Huskers return two starters in 2015-16, including senior forward Shavon Shields, who leads NU’s returnees in scoring (15.4 ppg), rebounding (6.0 rpg) and assists (2.2 apg). The Huskers also welcome a nationally ranked recruiting class which includes freshmen Ed Morrow Jr. and Glynn Watson Jr., both of whom are ranked in the top-75 nationally by ESPN.com. In addition, the Huskers also gain the services of guard Andrew White III, who sat out last season after transferring from Kansas.

The Big Ten retained the Commissioner’s Cup, given to the champion of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, following an 8-6 victory last season. The Big Ten trails in the all-time series, 10-4-2, but is 4-0-2 in the last six years of the event.

Wednesday’s announcement is the second one for the 2015-16 season, as the Huskers will travel to Big East champion Villanova in the Gavitt Tipoff Games on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
