Lincoln Residents Frustrated by Sewer Backup Take Gripes to City Council

lincoln-nebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln residents and property owners have asked the City Council for help and future protection against another backup of raw sewage into their homes.

Residents recounted on Monday how sewage spilled from toilets, shower drains and basement floor drains in homes and apartments last Thursday. Heavy rain runoff had overwhelmed the wastewater treatment plant on Theresa Street, as it had in October, forcing the release of raw sewage.

Stephanie Sullivan says sewer water in her home was knee deep last week and told the council that, “We should not have sewer coming into our homes.”

Council members acknowledged the residents’ frustration and said city staffers will look into what the city can do to help out now and to prevent future backups.

Ricketts Says He Urged Top Nebraska Medical Official to Stay

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts says he urged the state’s chief medical officer not to resign last week after he failed to win initial confirmation from lawmakers.

The governor said Tuesday that Dr. Joseph Acierno decided to step down even after Ricketts expressed confidence in his work.

Lawmakers failed to confirm Acierno during an initial vote last week, with some senators accusing him of being arrogant and an obstacle to changes they wanted made. They reconsidered their decision the next day and confirmed him on a 34-6 vote.

Ricketts says Acierno told him that the first vote had undermined his ability to do his job. Ricketts praised Acierno for his eight years of service, including his involvement with the Nebraska Medical Center’s treatment of Ebola patients.

Nebraska Woman Sentenced for Tax Fraud Scheme

dept.-of-justiceOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska woman has been ordered to pay nearly $57,000 in restitution and spend a dozen consecutive weekends behind bars for filing fraudulent federal tax returns.

Federal prosecutors also say Magalita Gelin on Monday was sentenced to five years of probation that includes eight months of home confinement.

The prosecutors say that between February 2009 and August 2010, Gelin and Joshua Miles filed bogus returns for several people who went to couple’s home in Bellevue. The tax returns claimed refunds totaling more than $111,000.

Miles also has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing on June 19.

Gothenburg Woman Hurt While Hitching Trailer at Campground

Gosper-County-SheriffELWOOD, Neb. (AP) — A 70-year-old Gothenburg woman has been injured while helping her husband hitch up two vehicles at a Johnson Lake campground in south-central Nebraska.

The Gosper County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and medics were sent to the campground around 10:25 a.m. Monday. Deputies learned that the accident occurred as Katherine Graff tried to help her husband, 70-year-old James Graff, connect the front of a pickup to the rear of a motorhome.

Deputies say James Graff accelerated the pickup instead of braking, pinning his wife between the vehicles.

She was taken to a Lexington hospital and then to an Omaha hospital.

South Platte River Flooding Expected in Lincoln, Keith Counties

platte-riverNORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A warning has been issued for flooding along the South Platte River in western Nebraska.

The National Weather Service says a combination of heavy rain in northeast Colorado and snowmelt from the mountains will engorge the river and cause significant flooding in Keith and Lincoln counties.

A gauge at Roscoe on Tuesday morning registered the river level only a few inches under flood stage of 9 feet. The weather service says the river is expected to crest at 12 feet there on Saturday evening.

The river is expected to crest a foot above flood stage on Monday morning at North Platte. The weather service says 14 feet at North Platte could cause flooding of yards and basements, and storm drains could back up.

Work on Highway 30 Set to Begin Between Brady and Gothenburg

NDORWeather permitting, on May 18, Werner Construction will begin a highway improvement project between Brady and Gothenburg, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads.

The project consists of replacing the existing asphalt surface with a concrete overlay.

A 12′ width restriction will be in place during the initial phase, which will end approximately the first part of June.  At that time, Highway 30 traffic will be detoured to I-80.

During the detour, Highway 30 between R.P. 200+91 and 212+76 will be open to local traffic only. The detour is expected to be in effect until fall 2015.

Motorists are reminded to be extra careful in and near highway work zones, and to buckle up, every trip.

creightonOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen is among the winners of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award.

Bo Pelini

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska athletic department will save about $1.4 million in contract buyout pay to Bo Pelini with the former football coach’s hiring at Youngstown State.

According to the revised payment schedule released by the athletic department Tuesday, Pelini will receive $128,009 a month from Nebraska through February 2019. That’s $21,991 less than the $150,000 a month he was owed before Youngstown hired him in December, shortly after his firing at Nebraska.

Pelini was paid $3.1 million in his final year at Nebraska. He signed a four-year contract at Youngstown for $213,894 a year.

The original total buyout of $7.9 million was reduced to $6.54 million. The Omaha World-Herald first reported the revised figures.
