Petteway Heads to NBA Combine

Lincoln – Nebraska guard Terran Petteway will begin embarking on his professional journey this week, as the NBA Combine takes place in Chicago.

Petteway, who graduated from Nebraska on Saturday, is one of 62 players invited to this week’s combine, and one of 39 underclassmen who will participate in the event which runs from Tuesday to Sunday.

The event includes medical testing, interviews with NBA teams as well as on-court sessions on Thursday and Friday which include five-on-five games, shooting drills, strength and agility testing.

Petteway was a two-time All-Big Ten performer for the Huskers during his career, as he finished his career 20th on NU’s career scoring list with 1,143 points in two season.

As a junior, he topped the Huskers and ranked fourth in the Big Ten in scoring at 18.2 points per game, while also placing among the Big Ten leaders in 3-pointers (2.2, eighth), assists (2.8, 14th) and steals (1.1, 15th) per game. In all, he was in double figures in 29 of 31 games, including 13 games with at least 20 points.

As a sophomore, he led the Huskers to 19 wins in the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998, averaging a Big Ten-leading 18.1 points per game along with 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest. Petteway was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection and was also a first-team all-district pick by the NABC (coaches) and U.S. Basketball Writers Association. He had a pair of 30-point efforts in 2013-14, including a career-high 35 point effort against Minnesota.

The 2015 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 25, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. It will be televised nationally by ESPN.

Body of Missing Omaha Boy Found

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say they’ve found the body of a 5-year-old boy whose adult brother is charged in the killing of their mother and whose younger brother was found alive in a dumpster.

Douglas County Sheriff Tim Dunning said Monday that Josue Ramirez-Marinero’s body has been found, but he provided no details. Authorities have been searching the Elkhorn River on the west side of Omaha since last week.

Authorities say Josue’s brother Robert Martinez-Marinero surrendered to police Thursday and said he’d stabbed his mother, 45-year-old Jesus Ismenia Marinero.

The 25-year-old man also said he’d thrown Josue in the river and put 11-month-old Angel Ramirez-Marinero in the dumpster.

Angel was found bruised but alive Wednesday in the dumpster in La Vista. His mother’s body was found Wednesday night in a southeast Omaha ditch.

Creighton University Demolishes 5 Buildings Near Campus

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton University has demolished five buildings near the campus, but officials say they have no immediate plans to build on the newly vacant land.

University spokeswoman Cindy Workman said the buildings were empty and at least one was badly deteriorated. They were torn down last week and had housed mostly industrial businesses.

The school has said before that it plans to build an $82 million dental clinic to replace its aging, smaller space next to the Creighton University Medical Center. It’s seeking $8 million from the Nebraska Legislature to help pay for the building.

Police: Man Died After Car Rammed Pole in Northeast Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a driver died after his car rammed a traffic signal pole in northeast Lincoln.

The accident occurred a little before 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Police Capt. Danny Reitan says the roadway was wet from rain, but it’s uncertain whether weather played a role in the crash.

The man was alone in his car. His name hasn’t been released, pending notification of relatives.

Tractor Safety Courses for Young Nebraska Farm Workers Offered

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A series of two-day tractor safety courses will be offered across Nebraska later this month and next month for teenagers who are going to work on farms this summer.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educator Sharry Nielsen says the most common cause of death in agricultural accidents in the state is from overturning tractors and all-terrain vehicles.

The courses are designed to teach teens how to operate farm equipment and how to use a “safety first” attitude.

The first day focuses on intense classroom instruction and a written test that students must pass to move on. The second day features driving tests and more hands-on instruction.

The course costs $60. Anyone interested in attending should contact their local UNL Extension office or contact Nielsen at 308-832-0645.

Iowa, Nebraska High on List of States with Worst Puppy Mills

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Nebraska and Iowa rank high on a list of states with what are described as some of the worst puppy mills.

A report from the Humane Society of the United States says Nebraska ranks third on “The Horrible Hundred 2015” list, with 14 of the breeders. Iowa ranks fourth with 11 breeders on the list. The list was led by Missouri, with 23, and Kansas, with 16.

The society says its list doesn’t include all of the worst breeders.

A puppy mill is described by the Humane Society as “an inhumane, commercial dog-breeding facility in which the health of the dogs is disregarded in order to maintain a low overhead and maximize profits.”

Nebraska Prisons Director Says 2 Inmates Killed by Prisoners

TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska corrections officials believe other inmates likely killed two prisoners who died during a disturbance at a maximum security prison in southeast Nebraska.

State Corrections Director Scott Frakes didn’t provide many details about the deaths that were discovered Monday as officials regained control of the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution. Frakes said the deaths are still being investigated.

Speaking at a news conference, Frakes said 100 to 200 of the roughly 1,000 inmates at the prison were involved in the disturbance that began Sunday afternoon in front of a housing unit at the prison about 60 miles southwest of Lincoln.

Two prison staffers were assaulted in the initial disturbance. Frakes says one inmate was shot in the leg by a tower guard, and another inmate was injured by a rubber projectile.

Warrant Issued for Suspect in Southeast Omaha Slaying

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A warrant has been issued for a man being sought in the stabbing death of a 31-year-old Omaha resident.

Omaha police say 37-year-old Juan Manuel Martinez is charged in the warrant with second-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. No arrest has been reported.

Police say officers sent to a southeast Omaha residence about 1:30 a.m. Sunday found David Silva-Avalos, who died at the scene.

2 Inmates Dead After Nebraska Officials Regain Control of Prison

TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) — Two inmates were found dead at a maximum security prison in southeastern Nebraska after officers regained control of the facility.

The state Department of Correctional Services says inmates took control of at least part of the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution Sunday.

Staff members were attempting to break up a large gathering of inmates in front of a housing unit when the disturbance began Sunday, James Foster, a department spokesman, said in a statement.

Two staff members and two inmates were injured.

Foster said Monday that officers regained control of the facility that houses 11 death row inmates. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating after two inmates were found dead.

There were no reports of any escapes.
