PIERCE, Neb. (AP) — Two people in a car that ran a stop sign have died in a collision with a semitrailer in northeast Nebraska.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Wednesday that the accident occurred a little before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, about a mile west of Osmond.
The release says the car driven by 88-year-old Darleen Wallin didn’t halt at the Bloomfield Road intersection with U.S. Highway 20 and collided with the semi.
The Sheriff’s Office says Wallin and her husband, 93-year-old Lloyd Wallin, were killed. They lived in Newman Grove. The truck driver, Jeffrey Petersen, of Oakland, was taken to a hospital.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will not legalize medical marijuana this year in light of other controversial measures dominating the final days of the legislative session.
Sen. Tommy Garrett of Bellevue asked Wednesday to hold his bill until June 15, ensuring senators will not revisit the debate until next year.
The bill made it through first-round debate with a 27-12 vote. But Garrett says the Speaker of the Legislature approached him Tuesday saying there was no longer enough support to guarantee its success.
Garrett says senators have been bombarded with criticism about their votes to repeal the death penalty and have to prioritize tough choices.
A bill to study a low-potency cannabis derivative for treating seizures passed last week and awaits action by Gov. Pete Ricketts.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 48-year-old man is suspected of stealing jewelry from several Lincoln homes while working in them for a cleaning service.
Robert Harris faces a felony theft charge from a March case and soon could face more charges. Harris has been jailed pending $75,000 bond. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment on Harris’ behalf.
Harris was arrested on April 1 after being accused of pawning six items stolen from a Lincoln woman’s home. He bonded out of jail but was rearrested last week after investigators checked reports from seven other clients of the cleaning service that jewelry had been stolen from December through March.
(AP)–The first report from a big project to improve genetic testing shows it is not as rock solid as many people believe.
Many companies offer gene tests to gauge a person’s risk of developing various disorders. Several years ago, the government helped start a database to track the results. The study finds that labs often disagree on how harmful or benign certain gene variants are. That means some people are wrongly told to worry and others are wrongly told they can relax.
Researchers say consumers getting a gene test should choose a lab that is sharing its results with other scientists to help make testing more accurate for everyone.
The study was discussed Wednesday at a conference in Washington and published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.
DETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling nearly 423,000 cars and SUVs in North America because the power-assisted steering can fail while they’re being driven.
The recall covers certain Ford Flex and Taurus vehicles, as well as the Lincoln MKS and MKT from 2011 through 2013. Also covered are the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ from 2011 through 2012 and some 2011 Mercury Milans.
Ford says an intermittent electrical connection can cause the power steering to stop. That sends the steering into manual mode, making the vehicles harder to control.
Dealers will either update power steering software or replace the steering gear.
The company also is recalling 19,500 2015 Mustangs with 2.3-Liter engines due to high underbody temperatures that could degrade the fuel tank. Dealers will replace a heat shield and add insulation.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Defensive end Antonio Smith is absent from the Denver Broncos’ organized team activities while prosecutors in Texas investigate a criminal sexual complaint against him.
Smith met with general manager John Elway, team president and CEO Joe Ellis and coach Gary Kubiak and they all agreed it was best for Smith to skip the voluntary workouts that began Wednesday.
Smith, 33, has not been arrested and no charges have been filed in the case. Sheriff Troy Nehls of Fort Bend County near Houston said a complaint was made against Smith in November and it was “sexual in nature.” His department’s findings were forwarded to prosecutors in February.
District Attorney John Healey last week said the investigation was ongoing and stressed the “complaint at this point is an allegation only.”

The Nebraska Labor Department said in the report released Wednesday that the preliminary April rate is nine-tenths of a point under the April 2014 rate of 3.4 percent.
The new Nebraska figure remains well below the preliminary national unemployment rate of 5.4 percent in April. U.S. Labor Department figures say Nebraska was trailed by North Dakota at 3.1 percent and Utah at 3.4 percent.

Bradley Lilleston is charged with domestic assault and use of a weapon. Online records don’t list an attorney who could be contacted to comment on behalf of Lilleston.
Court documents say Lilleston threw some photos in front of the car on Thursday morning and that he accelerated when the woman tried to retrieve them. The documents say she was thrown over the hood and windshield and suffered a cut on her forehead and swelling on her right shin.
The woman told police that she and Lilleston had been arguing for several days and that he had hit her in an eye the day before.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say last week’s rainfall across much of the state delayed Nebraska farmers’ work in their fields.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that as of Sunday, 92 percent of the expected Nebraska corn crop had been planted, trailing the five-year average of 96 percent by the date. And just 59 percent of the expected soybean crop had been planted, compared with the five-year average of 73 percent and the 85 percent of last year.
However, 50 percent of the expected sorghum had been planted by Sunday, compared with the average of 41 percent.
The winter wheat condition was rated 14 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 34 percent good and 2 percent excellent.
