GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A receptacle for retired flags has been dedicated with a salute from the United Veterans Club Honor Guard at a funeral home in Grand Island.
The box will be a permanent fixture at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Funeral director Matt Myers says many people don’t know what to do with their flags to dispose of them properly.
Myers says the flags will be taken to their crematory, where they will be used to honor veterans as they’re being cremated. He says each veteran will be draped in a flag.
The receptacle is painted red, white and blue with flag images across all sides. It’s similar in size to a full-size post office drop box and will be open 24/7, year-round.
