Welk Named CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year; Gipson, Wiseman Also First Teamers

Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska track and field senior John Welk added one more prestigious award to his impressive resume on Thursday, winning CoSIDA’s Capital One Academic All-American of the Year award for men’s track and field.

Levi Gipson and Drew Wiseman were also honored as CoSIDA first-team Academic All-Americans, giving the Huskers three of the 15 first-team selections. It’s the first time any Husker team other than football has had three first-team Academic All-Americans in a year. The Nebraska men and women now have a total of 55 CoSIDA Academic-All America selections all-time, including a nation-leading 41 since 2002. It also marks the sixth consecutive year the Husker men and women have combined for at least three Academic All-Americans.

MPCC Rodeo Team benefits from Cowboy Kickball

A new event at NEBRASKAland Days raised about $250 for the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team on Wednesday night.

A total of 10 teams competed in Cowboy Kickball at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

The MPCC Wrangler Booster Club had one of them. It lost 15-10 to a team from Great Plains Health, but the college came out a winner anyway at the end of the day.

Bill Troshynski, NLD board member and an organizer of the kickball event, said proceeds from the $25 entry fees would be donated to the MPCC Rodeo Team.

Hispanic Population Growth Outpaced by Asians in Nebraska

us-census-bureauLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s Hispanic population saw its smallest increase in 2014 since an immigration wave to the state began more than two decades ago.

U.S. census estimates released Thursday show the number of Hispanics grew by 2.5 percent over the previous year, the smallest percentage recorded since July 1991.

Nebraska’s Hispanic population grew by 4,707 during in the most recent year, to a total of 191,325. The group accounted for more than 10 percent of the state’s total population as of July 2014.

Asians took the lead as the state’s fastest-growing demographic, although their overall numbers remained smaller than the Hispanic population. The number of Asians has grown 23.5 percent since 2010, to a total of nearly 41,000 last year.

Moustakas, Infante leads Royals past Mariners 8-2

kc-royalsSEATTLE (AP) — Mike Moustakas hit a two-run home run and Omar Infante had a three-run double in a seven-run fourth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 8-2 on Wednesday night.

Alcides Escobar opened the fourth with a single to right off Roenis Elias (4-5), who had retired the first nine batters. Moustakas followed with his seventh homer over the right-field wall.

The Royals would score five more, all with two outs. Infante unloaded the bases with his double to left, then Jarrod Dyson and Escobar each followed with left-field RBI doubles.

Escobar had three hits – two in the fourth – and scored twice. Moustakas had three hits and two RBI.

Ryan Madson (1-1) worked 1-plus inning of hitless relief for the win.

Diamondbacks rally past Rockies 8-7

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Pinch-hitter Aaron Hill hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly to cap a three-run rally in the ninth inning, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Colorado Rockies 8-7 Wednesday night in a game that began with a 46 minute rain delay.

Down 7-5 heading into the ninth, Arizona pulled within a run on Yasmany Tomas’ RBI single, his career-high fourth hit of the game. After a bloop single by Jake Lamb loaded the bases, closer John Axford (1-1) fanned Chris Owings but then walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia, forcing home the tying run and blowing a save for the first time in 13 chances this season.

Hill, batting for reliever Daniel Hudson (2-2), then drove a fly ball to deep center, scoring Tomas from third.

Brad Ziegler pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

Huskers land commitment from TE Jack Stoll

Mike Riley’s staff has landed another commitment to it’s 2016 recruiting class, this one coming from Aurora, Colorado tight end Jack Stoll.

Stoll, 6-5, 225-pounds, chose to verbally commit to Nebraska over looks from Texas, Colorado & Colorado State among others.

As a junior at Regis Jesuit High School, Stoll caught 19 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns. He’s currently ranked as the #3 overall prospect in the state of Colorado.

Virginia wins 1st CWS title in 4-2 win over Vanderbilt

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Pavin Smith homered and drove in three runs and Brandon Waddell turned in another strong College World Series pitching performance, leading Virginia over Vanderbilt 4-2 on Wednesday night for the school’s first baseball national championship.

The Cavaliers (44-24) prevailed in the CWS finals rematch against the defending champion Commodores and brought the Atlantic Coast Conference its first title in baseball since Wake Forest in 1955.

Waddell (5-5) went seven innings and allowed only two hits after Vanderbilt (51-21) scored twice in the first. He retired the last 11 batters he faced. It was Waddell’s fifth career CWS start, and Virginia won each of them.

Nathan Kirby pitched the last two innings and struck out five for his first save. John Kilichowski (3-4) took the loss.

NP Police Seek Public’s Help in Identifying Burglar

burglary video image june 24The North Platte Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a “person of interest” in a local burglary.

According to police, officers responded to a local business on June 15, after learning the business had been burglarized.

Police say the suspect stole a Michael Kors handbag, cash and an Adams Bank and Trust money bag.

Officers say the suspect was captured by surveillance cameras at the business, but they have been unable to identify him.

The videos are posted on the Lincoln County Crimestoppers website, and authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.

Police say it appears the suspect has tattoos on his left forearm.

Lincoln Construction Worker Killed by Piece of Falling Metal

ambulance-lightsLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a worker has been killed by a piece of metal that fell from a crane at a construction site in Lincoln.

Police say the accident occurred late Wednesday morning on the southeast edge of the downtown campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Lincoln police Sgt. Ed Sheridan says a piece of rebar fell about 130 feet from the crane and hit the man in the head, shattering his hard hat.

The man’s name hasn’t been released.
