Denver Drops Marijuana Exhibits from County Fair

Colorado-MarijuanaDENVER (AP) — The Denver County Fair is dropping marijuana exhibits from the event — a year after some people said they were unwittingly served pot-infused chocolate in the “Pot Pavilion.”

The organizer of the county fair insists that the fair made the move because marijuana-related vendor sales were slow, not due to the incident at the pavilion.

Organizer Dana Cain says Denver has so many marijuana-related festivals that the drug has become kind of old hat.

The fair last year did not display actual marijuana, Instead, growers entered pictures of plants for competition.

Vendors were forbidden from giving away or selling pot, but more than a dozen attendees filed suit, saying they were given weed-infused chocolates.

The lawsuit has since been settled out of court.

Judge to Consider Blocking Kansas Ban on Abortion Method

judgeshipTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — An abortion rights group is asking a Kansas judge to block the state’s first-in-the-nation ban on what it says is the most common method for terminating second-trimester pregnancies.

Shawnee County District Judge Larry Hendricks has scheduled a hearing Thursday in a lawsuit filed earlier this month by the Center for Reproductive Rights.

The law takes effect next week. The center contends it will force women to accept higher medical risks or forgo abortions.

Lawyers for the state argue that abortion providers have safe alternatives to what anti-abortion activists describe as dismembering a fetus.

The National Right to Life Committee drafted the ban as model legislation for states. Kansas was the first to enact it.

The center represents father-daughter abortion providers and Drs. Herbert Hodes and Traci Nauser of Overland Park.

At around 6:30 p.m., on June 23, an officer with the North Platte Police Department responded to a residence in the 100 block of South Walnut Street on the report of a sexual assault.

The officer met with the mother of the girl, who alleged that her daughter had been at a residence in the 1200 block of West 9th Street, the prior evening.

She said that, as her daughter slept, 36-year-old Brandon Fox inappropriately fondled her. The girl was taken to the Bridge of Child Advocacy Center and interviewed.

Following the interview and further investigation, officers determined that there was probable cause to arrest Fox.

Anthony Garcia

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A judge has ordered a single trial for a former doctor in two sets of double slayings in Omaha.

Anthony Garcia had sought separate trials in the slayings of four people with ties to an Omaha medical school. The attacks occurred in 2008 and 2013.

But on Tuesday Judge Duane Dougherty of Douglas County District Court declined the defense request and ordered one trial. It is scheduled to begin on Sept. 14.

Defense attorneys Bob and Alison Motta of Chicago had said that trying the cases together could unfairly sway jurors.

But a major piece of prosecutors’ case is Garcia’s and the victims’ links to the Creighton University pathology department. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine has said the cases are inextricably intertwined.
