Virginia’s 3-0 win over Vandy forces Game 3 in CWS finals

NCAA-CWSOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Surprise starter Adam Haseley and Josh Sborz combined on the shutout, senior utility man Thomas Woodruff drove in two runs, and the Cavaliers defeated Vanderbilt 3-0 on Tuesday night to force a winner-take-all game in the College World Series.

For the second year in a row, these two teams will go the distance in the best-of-three finals. Vanderbilt (51-20) will be playing for a second straight national title on Wednesday. Virginia (43-24) will be looking for its first.

Virginia broke through against Vandy starter Phil Pfeifer (6-5) for three unearned runs in the sixth after he had retired the first two batters.

Montgomery (2-2) became the second Mariners pitcher this season to toss a complete game, joining Felix Hernandez, and he became the 10th rookie in Seattle history to toss a complete game. Montgomery retired 17 straight batters at one point, striking out a career-high 10 and allowing only two base runners after the second inning.

Montgomery was originally drafted by the Royals, but was eventually traded to Tampa Bay before landing in Seattle via trade before the start of this season. He walked none and escaped a bases loaded jam in the first inning before overpowering Kansas City the rest of the way.

Douglas County Sheriff: Man Shot by Deputy Had Threatened Police

douglas-county-sheriffOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man shot Tuesday morning by a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy had fired a gun at another deputy and had earlier threatened to shoot police if confronted.

Sheriff Tim Dunning said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference that a deputy stopped 32-year-old Taylor Culbertson in a west Omaha convenience store parking lot, suspecting Culbertson was drunk. Dunning says Culbertson got out of a sport utility vehicle and fired a handgun at the deputy. A struggle ensued, and another deputy who arrived on the scene shot Culbertson, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

An officer safety bulletin sent out June 8 by the sheriff’s department warned that Culbertson was likely armed and had threatened to shoot police if confronted.

The deputies were not injured.

Police sent an alert to students, parents and university employees after receiving the report. Residents in nearby university housing units were told to stay inside, but the alert was lifted about an hour later.

CDC Tests for Plague in Northern Colorado After Teen’s Death

cdcFORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is trying to determine how prevalent the plague is in northern Colorado after a 16-year-old boy died of the disease, which was possibly spread by fleas on his family’s rural property.

Taylor Gaes (Gays) died June 8 after coming down with what he thought was a bad case of the flu, but tests confirmed it was a rare form of the plague.

The most common type of plague, bubonic, affects the body’s lymphatic system. But Gaes is believed to have had septicemic plague, which spreads directly through the bloodstream.

Cases of plague are rare, with an average of seven human cases nationally a year.

County health officials are working with the CDC to test animals on the family’s property near Fort Collins for the plague.

Study: Scant Evidence That Medical Pot Helps Most Illnesses

Medical-Marijuana-leafCHICAGO (AP) — A big research analysis says medical marijuana has not been proven to work for many illnesses for which state laws have approved it.

The analysis found the strongest evidence is for chronic pain and for muscle stiffness in multiple sclerosis. But the authors say evidence is weak for many other conditions, including anxiety, sleep disorders, and Tourette’s syndrome.

The analysis evaluated 79 studies involving more than 6,000 patients. It’s published in Tuesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association.

A separate study tested edible medical marijuana products and found many labels don’t accurately list amounts of the active ingredients. More than half had lower than listed amounts but some had higher than listed amounts.
