Group Unveils Ads Aimed at Death Penalty Petition Drive

signing-petitionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A group that opposes Nebraska’s death penalty petition drive has released two television ads urging voters not to sign a petition that seeks to put the issue on the 2016 ballot.

Nebraskans for Public Safety posted the ads on social media on Monday and said they will run on television starting Tuesday.

The ads feature Nebraska voters Martha Brown, Timorree Adams Klinger and state Sen. Colby Coash of Lincoln, a conservative who led the repeal effort in the Legislature this year.

Danielle Conrad, a spokeswoman for the group, says the death penalty is broken and should left in the past. Nebraska last executed an inmate in 1997.

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — ESPN says it obtained a notebook that shows Pete Rose bet on Cincinnati Reds games during his last season as an active player in 1986.

The career hits leader agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989 after an investigation by John Dowd, a lawyer retained by Major League Baseball, concluded he bet on the Reds to win from 1985-87, during his time as a player and manager.

Rose repeatedly denied the allegations before admitting in a 2004 autobiography that he bet on Cincinnati to win while he managed the team. Rose became player-manager in 1984 and managed the team until the suspension in August 1989.

Rose is on baseball’s permanently suspended list and is ineligible for the Hall of Fame.

Faith Groups, Law Enforcement Break into Death Penalty Debate

lethal-injectionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska voters can expect to hear a lot about the death penalty this summer from influential people in their communities, from their local church pastor to the county sheriff.

Faith groups and law enforcement are jumping into the debate as petition circulators try to gather enough signatures to place the issue on the 2016 general election ballot.

Law enforcement groups have generally supported the punishment each year when Nebraska lawmakers considered repealing it, while some religious groups spoke against the death penalty.

Both sides are now turning their attention to the public after the Legislature voted last month to abolish capital punishment and supporters launched a petition drive to keep it.
