WAVERLY, Neb. (AP) — A 19-year-old man faces charges after police say surveillance video captured him breaking into storage units in eastern Nebraska.

Cody Tierney was arrested Thursday after police received a burglary report from the owner of Overpass Storage in Waverly. The owner says seven storage units were burglarized sometime around Wednesday.

Police say surveillance video shows four people at the scene during the time of the burglaries. Tierney is suspected of being one of them.

Tierney is at the Lancaster County jail. He faces several burglary charges, including several counts of aiding and abetting a burglary. A message for the county public defender’s office was not immediately returned.

A 16-year-old was also identified from the video. He was cited on being an accessory to a felony.

Omaha Man Organizes Blood Drive in Honor of Infant Son

good-newsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man spent his Father’s Day weekend organizing a blood drive in memory of his infant son.

Timothy Seretta organized a blood drive event Saturday for his son, Henry. Seretta says the 7-month-old died in November after he was diagnosed with leukemia.

Seretta said blood transfusions Henry received while at the hospital helped keep the boy alive for several days longer.

Seretta says the best Father’s Day present for him is helping someone else’s child.

DUNCAN, Neb. (AP) — Officials say no one was injured when a train traveling through Nebraska struck an empty car parked on the tracks.

The Union Pacific train hit an unoccupied car early Sunday near Duncan. The car got stuck to the train and traveled with it for about a half mile. The car then hit a bridge and burst into flames.

The train was traveling from Oakland, California, to Chicago.

Company spokesman Mark Davis said the fire damaged two rail cars with containers and damaged the bridge. The train crew was not hurt.

Davis says the tracks and line in the area would be closed through early Monday to repair the bridge.

Additional information about the owner of the car is not available.

North Platte, Neb. (June 20, 2015) –A couple of Husker cowboys left the 2015 Buffalo Bill Rodeo with some extra cash in their pockets, and one of them with the gold buckle.

Riley Pruitt returned to the Wild West Arena, where he has competed in the pro ranks, as well as in high school rodeo and with the Nebraska State Rodeo Association, and walked out as tie-down roping champion.

The Gering, Neb. man made an 8.2 second run on his first animal in slack Wednesday morning, and followed up with an 8.8 second time on his second run to win the average with a time of 17.0 seconds on two head.

He’s won money at the North Platte event before, but never won the gold buckle, which his dad, 1991 world champion tie-down roper Troy Pruitt, has won several times. Troy and Riley’s granddad,Don Meter were in attendance to watch his runs.

Morales homers on birthday in Royals’ 7-4 win over Red Sox

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kendrys Morales homered on his 32nd birthday and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 on Saturday night.

Morales hit a two-run, tie-breaking shot in a five-run fifth off Rick Porcello (4-8). It was his third career homer on his birthday.

The Red Sox lost third baseman Pablo Sandoval (sprained left ankle) and catcher Blake Swihart (sprained left foot) to injuries and designated hitter David Ortiz was ejected in the seventh inning by home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman.

The Red Sox scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, but Porcello imploded in the bottom of the inning with a hit batter, a balk, a walk and four hits.

Porcello lost his sixth straight, matching his career high set in 2012. He allowed six runs, eight hits, two walks and hit two batters in five innings.

Blackmon’s 3 RBIs lead Rockies past Brewers 5-1

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon homered and drove in three runs, Chad Bettis pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Colorado Rockies snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.

Adam Lind homered for the Brewers’ only run.

Colorado had lost nine of its last 10 before getting a strong outing from Bettis (3-2), who got his first win since carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning at Philadelphia on May 29. He allowed one run and five hits, walked two and struck out five in 6 1-3 innings.

Bettis got the Rockies off to a good start by holding Milwaukee scoreless until the sixth. It was the first time in six games a Colorado opponent didn’t score in the first inning.

The offense, which hit .215 in the previous 10 games, gave Bettis enough support to get the win.

Access improvements planned for 3 Buffalo County lakes

game-and-parks-featureELM CREEK, Neb. (AP) — Officials say people who fish at Sandy Channel State Recreation Area in Buffalo County soon will have better access at three of the area’s lakes.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says Lake No. 8 will have a fishing pier installed for people with disabilities, and more than 500 feet of shoreline will be cleared of brush. Lake No. 2 will have a concrete boat ramp installed and 400 feet of shoreline development to improve conditions for anglers. Lake No. 4 also will have a concrete boat ramp installed, 500 feet of shoreline will be cleared of brush and walkways will be added.

The work should be finished by early fall. The recreation area will remain open during the project, but some spots may be temporarily closed because of construction.

Support Campaign Raises Thousands for Slain Omaha Officer’s Causes

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha campaign that began as a way to show support for police officers is now raising thousands of dollars for causes championed by Officer Kerrie Orozco, who was shot and killed in the line of duty last month.

The Support Blue campaign, being run through the First Responders Foundation, launched in March in the wake of negative public sentiment following a number of highly publicized police-involved shootings around the country.

After Orozco’s death on May 20, the campaign began printing up T-shirts to help her causes, like youth sports. Omaha police are manning a booth this month at the NCAA Men’s College World Series, where they sold $22,000 in T-shirts in the first week of the series.

In all, the campaign has sold more than $40,000 in T-shirts.
