While the Nebraska soccer team continues its tour of Canada with a string of international matches, an even bigger event is currently taking place in the United States’ neighboring country that has grabbed the attention of people all over the world: the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nebraska is not unfamiliar with the grandest stage of all of women’s soccer. Since the program’s start in 1994, NU has since produced 11 players to go on and compete for the prestigious World Cup title. The 2015 World Cup is no different, as three ex-Huskers earned their names on a coveted team roster. Former NU goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc and former midfielder Selenia Iacchelli play for Canada, while ex-Husker defender Ari Romero represents Mexico.

She attended rural grade school, riding her horse to school. Later she attended Hershey High School. Margaret was the first homecoming queen at Hershey High School and was also in the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Queen contest. This is where Ted Long first noticed her. His mother had sent him the article when he was in Korea in the Army.

As newlyweds they made their home on the Long Ranch, northwest of North Platte, where she still lived at the time of her death.
To this union four children were born; Michaelene, Thomas, Patrick and Cathy. She was very active in the lives of her children, attending 4-H events, high school rodeos and baseball, football and volleyball games.
Margaret traveled with Ted all over the world attending art shows. She was very knowledgeable on painting and sculpture and knew many of the artists who created that work. Margaret and Ted hosted President Ronald Reagan at a luncheon at the ranch when Reagan visited North Platte. Along with assembling an extensive art collection, she enjoyed the “hunt” for antiques too.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Ted, her parents Tom and Catherine Hoatson, sisters Regina McWilliams and Mary Schenck and brothers, Tom and Robert Hoatson.
She is survived by her children, Michaelene of North Platte, Tom (Connie) of Gothenburg, Patrick (Kathy) of Elko, Nevada and Cathy of North Platte. Grandsons include Trevor (Amy) Golter and Blair (Tracy) Golter, three great-granddaughters and two great grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carlos Correa homers, Astros hit 4 in 8-4 win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Carlos Correa hit one of Houston’s four home runs, Brett Olberholtzer pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the Astros continued their power surge Wednesday night in an 8-4 win over the Colorado Rockies.

Chris Carter, Preston Tucker and Jake Marisnick also homered for the first-place Astros, who have won four straight and lead the majors with 95 home runs. Correa and George Springer had three hits each.

Olberholtzer (2-1) followed up his eight shutout innings against Seattle on Friday with another strong outing. He allowed three runs and eight hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in 6 1-3 innings.

He worked around Charlie Blackmon’s leadoff double in the sixth but left after allowing Nick Hundley’s RBI single in the seventh.

Jury: Neither Royals, man hurt by flying hot dog at fault

sluggerrrKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A jury says neither the Kansas City Royals nor a man who was hurt when he was struck in the eye by a foil-wrapped hot dog were at fault in the accident.

Jackson County jurors said nobody Wednesday was to blame for the incident at a September 2009 Royals game.

Overland Park, Kansas, resident John Coomer sued the team, saying Royals mascot Sluggerrr recklessly threw a hot dog behind his back and struck Coomer in the eye.

A jury in 2011 found Coomer 100 percent at fault because he should have been paying better attention. A Missouri appeals court disagreed in 2013, saying mascots aren’t necessary to play the game of baseball.

The Missouri Supreme Court concurred and sent the case back to Jackson County for another trial.

North Platte, Neb. (June 17, 2015) – Nick Guy loves North Platte. Not that the Wisconsin cowboy wants to move there, but he sure loves spending a couple days there every June.

The 32 year old cowboy leads the first go-round in the steer wrestling after the first day of competition at the 2015 Buffalo Bill Rodeo, and it’s not the first time he’s won money in town.

Guy was the 2013 Buffalo Bill rodeo co-champion, as well as winning several checks at the rodeo before, and he’s won the Melvin/Swanson/Halligan Memorial Jackpot Steer Wrestling held in Sutherland the Tuesday of rodeo week as well.

“North Platte has been good to me,” the Sparta cowboy said. “It just seems like this time of year I hit a lick and get rolling. It’s a good time to start winning. North Platte is such a big rodeo, with 92 entries (in the steer wrestling), the go-rounds will pay almost $2,000, and that’s big money.”

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Joe Blanton picked up his first victory in nearly two years with five solid innings and Alcides Escobar equaled his career high with four RBIs as the Kansas City Royals pounded the Milwaukee Brewers 10-2 on Wednesday night.

Escobar tripled with the bases loaded in a four-run eighth. He also singled home a run in a three-run second. It was his third four-RBI game.

Director: Nebraska Prison Riot Investigation Nearly Finished

Scott Frakes

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s corrections director says a formal investigation into a prison riot last month is nearly complete.

Director Scott Frakes said Wednesday that he hopes to have the final report by the end of this week.

The review was launched after a May 10 prisoner uprising at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution that left two inmates dead. Death certificates from the state say Donald Peacock and Shon Collins died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Frakes says the prison remains on lockdown, although inmates have been allowed to have visitors and some access to outdoor recreation yards. He says he hopes to have final damage from the disturbance cleaned up in the next three weeks.

Sidney Police: 2 May Be Linked to More Than 100 Burglaries

sidney-policeSIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two women in the Nebraska Panhandle may have participated in more than 100 burglaries in the area since 2014.

The Sidney Police Department and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office say they plan to contact area residents who they believe were targeted. Authorities say some residents may not have realized their homes were burglarized.

One of the women told authorities about the alleged burglaries following a separate arrest in Colorado. It is unclear what charges will be filed in the case.

Authorities believe the women, both of Sidney, stole cash, jewelry and prescription medication.

One suspect told authorities the women scanned obituary notices and social media to target some homes.

Rockies sign No. 3 overall pick Rodgers

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have signed shortstop Brendan Rodgers, the team’s first-round pick in last week’s draft.

Rodgers was the third overall selection in the draft after a stellar prep career at Lake Mary High School in Florida. Rodgers hit .360 with eight home runs in 2015, his senior season.

Rodgers, along with Jonathan Gray in 2013, is the second-highest draft pick in team history. Right-handed pitcher Greg Reynolds was taken second overall in the 2006 draft.
