Madison, WI. – Former Huskers Jordan Burroughs and James Green both earned spots on the U.S. World Team after placing first this weekend in the U.S. World Team Trials at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI.

Four-time All-American James Green wrestled at 70kg (154 lbs) this weekend. Green defeated 2006 NCAA National Champion Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota in two matches, winning by a 5-0 decision in the first match before notching a 4-2 victory in the second bout. Green finished his career at Nebraska with a third-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships and also led the team in technical falls with ten in his senior campaign.

Lincoln – Former Nebraska and Lincoln Northeast point guard Ashley Ford will return home as an assistant coach with the Nebraska women’s basketball program, Coach Connie Yori announced on Monday.

Ford, who has spent the past five seasons on former Nebraska Associate Head Coach Cindy Fisher’s staff at the University of San Diego, rejoins the Husker program after helping to lay the foundation of Nebraska’s NCAA Tournament success as a player under Coach Yori.

“It is really gratifying as a coach to see the progress that Ashley has made in her career,” Yori said. “Ashley always has been willing to do the right thing, be patient, work hard and trust the process. I’m confident that she is the right addition to our staff at the right time.”

Bird Flu Found at Another Northeast Nebraska Farm

nebraska-department-of-agriLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Bird flu has been confirmed at a northeast Nebraska farm that was already voluntarily slaughtering its 200,000 chickens.

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that bird flu has now been confirmed on four farms in the state, up from three.

But the new test result doesn’t change the agency’s plan to kill nearly 5 million chickens and quarantine all nearby farms to limit the disease’s spread.

The Dixon County farm where the disease was found recently is one of two where all birds are being slaughtered as a precaution. The company that owns those farms also owns several farms where the disease has been confirmed.

Workers continue to slaughter chickens on the affected farms and have begun sanitizing the facilities.

Suburban Omaha Woman Accused of Sexually Assaulting Teen

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumPAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — A 47-year-old suburban Omaha woman has been accused of sexually assaulting a teenager several years ago.

Online court records say Stephanie Hagen, of Bellevue, is charged with sexual assault of a child. A public phone listing couldn’t be found for Hagen, who’s bonded out of jail. Her attorney didn’t return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press, seeking comment on the allegations.

Prosecutors say Hagen assaulted the girl over three years, starting in April 2005, when the girl was 13. Under Nebraska law, people 19 and over cannot have sexual contact with people under 16.

Nebraska Appeals Court Says State Unfair to Father

ne-court-of-appealsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Court of Appeals says state attorneys unfairly lobbed allegations during a hearing to remove a couple’s five children from their custody.

The ruling Tuesday came in the case of a couple whose lost custody last year after a state Child Protective Services investigator found three of them — ages 12, 9 and 18 months — alone in a central Nebraska hotel room.

Based on that and concerns that the couple were abusing prescription drugs and alcohol, officials sought to remove the children. But at the hearing, the state presented additional evidence, including claims that the children had lice and that their parents had sought to buy drugs.

The appeals court agreed with the father that the state’s last-minute allegations left him unable to provide a defense.

Toyota Adds Nearly 1.4M Vehicles to Takata Air Bag Recall

toyotaDETROIT (AP) — Toyota is adding nearly 1.4 million cars, trucks and SUVs to a growing recall for air bags that can explode with too much force.

The company says it’s expanding a previous recall after Takata Corp. of Japan agreed to double the size of its air bag inflator recall to 33.8 million.

Vehicles added to a passenger air bag inflator recall include the 2003 to 2007 Corolla and Matrix, 2005 and 2006 Tundra pickup, 2005 to 2007 Sequoia SUV and the 2003 to 2007 Lexus SC430 convertible.

The propellant in some Takata inflators can burn too quickly, blowing apart a metal canister and sending shrapnel into the passenger compartment. Seven deaths and more than 100 injuries have been attributed to the problem.

New Research Can Resume at Nebraska Livestock Facility

USDACLAY CENTER, Neb. (AP) — A federal livestock facility in Nebraska says it can resume new research after addressing all recommendations of an independent review of its animal care practices.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack halted research in March at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center near Clay Center until better animal welfare oversight procedures were put in place.

The center’s director says it has addressed the recommendations in a report by a U.S. Department of Agriculture panel.

The five-member panel toured the center in March and found no evidence of animal mistreatment. But it said the center’s animal welfare committee wasn’t fulfilling its responsibilities to review and oversee research.

The center conducts scientific studies to help the livestock industry increase the quantity and quality of meat production.

Ex-Omaha Tribe Chairman Pleads Guilty as Accessory to Theft

omaha-tribe-of-nebraskaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The former chairman of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska has pleaded guilty to an accessory charge in the theft of money from the tribe.

54-year-old Amen Sheridan, of Walthill, entered his plea on Monday in U.S. District Court in Omaha. He faces up to 30 months in prison when he’s sentenced on Sept. 14.

Court documents say Sheridan knew that Julia Whiteskunk had illegally used tribal funds for a down payment on the house they bought in 2009 and had helped her to prevent her arrest.

Whiteskunk was executive director of the tribal housing authority. She was charged in the scheme, but she died in September.

Most State Workers to Get 2.25 Percent Raise on July 1

nebraska-state-sealLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Most Nebraska state employees will get a raise but will face higher insurance deductibles and copays under a new two-year labor contract.

Employees will get a 2.25 percent raise starting July 1 and a 2.4 percent pay bump on July 1, 2016. The agreement applies to more than 10,000 workers represented by the Nebraska Association of Public Employees/AFSCME 61

The agreement signed earlier this year imposes higher annual insurance deductibles, from $1,600 to $2,000 per family, and higher medical out-of-pocket maximums, from $4,000 to $8,000 per family. Copayments for doctor visits and most prescription drugs will also increase.

Nebraska had 18,112 state employees as of 2013, not counting the University of Nebraska or the state colleges.

Negotiators for employees and the state say they’re satisfied with the overall agreement.
