Salvation Army, Food Bank Launch Summer Kids Meal Program

salvation-armyOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Two Omaha groups are collaborating to make sure thousands of Omaha-area children don’t go hungry this summer.

The Omaha Salvation Army and Food Bank for the Heartland are collaborating this summer for the Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen program. In its fifth year, the program brings hot, nutritious, free meals to the places where children live and play, such as parks, libraries and apartment complexes. Children 18 years and younger are eligible.

The meals are prepared by Westside Nutrition Services. Mutual of Omaha employees are donating more than 1,200 volunteer hours to help.

Utilizing four food trucks, the program distributes meals to 15 mobile sites in Omaha, Bellevue, Ralston, La Vista and Plattsmouth. Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen operates through Aug. 7 on weekdays. This summer’s goal is to provide 50,000 meals.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says roads and bridges have been afflicted with the worst damage.

The counties of Cass, Dundy, Gage, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lancaster, Morrill, Nuckolls, Otoe, Saline, Saunders, and Thayer have all declared emergencies.

The request will be reviewed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s regional office in Kansas City before it’s forwarded to the White House.

Archway Officials Hope Numbers Point to Increased Attendance

archway-monumentKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Managers of The Archway monument that spans Interstate 80 at Kearney are optimistic that this year’s boost in attendance and revenue will continue throughout the year.

Through May, the monument has seen an increase in attendance and revenue this year from the first five months of 2014.

Officials acknowledge that the boost is due, in part, to the closure of the monument in January and February of 2014.

But officials say the attraction’s historically busiest months are June, July and August, giving them hope that the numbers will continue to grow.

The Archway features exhibits commemorating the Oregon, Mormon and California pioneer trails and the nation’s highway systems and railroads.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man doing time for shooting his girlfriend last year — marring her “happiness is a warm gun” tattoo — has been ordered to pay her medical bills.

Lancaster County District Judge Steven Burns entered a judgment of nearly $20,000 against Paul Boye and in favor of Andrea Eberspacher to help cover her medical bills from the February 2014 shooting.

A jury will be asked at a trial set for September to determine if she deserves more for pain and suffering.

Boye is serving 10 to 15 years in prison for the shooting.

Court documents say the shooting occurred during an argument between Boye and Eberspacher after they had smoked methamphetamine and consumed vodka.

NU Board of Regents OKs Tuition Hike Over Next 2 Years

university-of-nebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Students at the University of Nebraska will pay more in tuition over the next two years after the university’s Board of Regents voted to end a two-year freeze on in-state tuition.

The board approved tuition hikes of 1.75 percent in 2015-16 and a 2.5 percent increase in 2016-17.

The increase will add about $3.50 per credit hour to tuition bills next year and $5 per credit hour the year after that.

NU President Hank Bounds told the regents that the tuition increases still keep the Nebraska university system’s costs below its peer institutions and fulfill the priorities of keeping the university affordable.
