DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets officially announced the hiring of Pete D’Alessandro as the senior vice president of business and team operations.

President Josh Kroenke said in a release Friday that he looks forward to D’Alessandro’s assistance in “creating additional synergy between our business and team operations to help take our organization to another level on and off the playing floor.”

D’Alessandro returns to the Nuggets’ front office after spending the last two seasons as GM of the Sacramento Kings.

The Nuggets are still searching for a head coach after firing Brian Shaw in March. Melvin Hunt served as an interim coach and remains a strong candidate for the job.

In addition, Kroenke promoted Greg Sherman to a similar position with the Colorado Avalanche. Sherman was the team’s assistant GM last season.

Garcia dominates, Cardinals beat Royals 4-0

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia pitched eight innings of four-hit ball and helped himself with an RBI single for the St. Louis Cardinals, who ended the Kansas City Royals’ four-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory in the opener of a high-profile weekend interleague series on Friday night.

Jon Jay snapped a 2-for-24 slump this month with a two-out RBI triple in the second off Yordano Ventura (3-6), and Garcia followed with his 12th career RBI on an opposite-field single to left.

The Cardinals are 40-21 overall and 23-7 at home, both major league bests. They got a huge outing from Garcia (2-3), so far a success story off thoracic outlet surgery.

Ventura lasted just three innings for the second straight start, removed as a precaution due to weakness in his pitching hand. In those two starts, he’s allowed six earned runs.

Miami rookie Urena earns 1st win as Marlins beat Rockies 5-1

MIAMI (AP) — Jose Urena pitched into the seventh inning for his first major league victory, and the Miami Marlins supported him with some slugging to beat the Colorado Rockies 5-1 Friday night.

The Marlins hit two home runs, neither by major league leader Giancarlo Stanton, and nearly had a third.

J.T. Realmuto hit a three-run homer, and Martin Prado had a solo shot. Marcell Ozuna’s two-run drive was wiped out by a replay review that determined the ball hooked foul, so he settled five pitches later for a two-out RBI single.

Stanton had a single and a double and scored a run.

The Rockies lost their third game in a row and have totaled one run in the first two games of the series.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A crew is finishing the installation of a refined coal system at the Whelan Energy Center transfer tower.

The Hastings Tribune reports that it moves Hastings Utilities closer to meeting an important Environmental Protection Agency standard.

Treating the coal means the coal-fired plant near Hastings addresses the agency’s Mercury and Air Toxic Standards, which has a 2016 deadline. The refined coal process reduces nitrogen oxides, mercury and sulfur dioxide emissions.

The refined coal construction job is the second for Springfield-based company CETC.

The request will be reviewed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s regional office in Kansas City before it’s forwarded to the White House.

Nebraska woman accused of trying to poison boyfriend’s mom

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A woman in southeast Nebraska has been accused of putting carpet cleaner into her boyfriend’s mother’s drink in an attempt to poison her.

Authorities say Nelson was angry with the woman. They say Nelson told officers she put carpet cleaner into the drink to poison the woman.

Company wrongly sued has $210K judgment against it vacated

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has reversed a more than $200,000 default judgment against a Virginia company that was the victim of mistaken identity.

The ruling comes in a lawsuit by Benjamin Carrel against federal contractor Serco Inc. after a man driving a pickup registered to a Texas company with a similar name ran over Carrel’s foot.

When the Virginia company failed to respond to court summons or appear in court, a default judgment of $210,216 was entered.

Serco attorneys said they only became aware of the case after garnishment proceedings began. The company sought to vacate the judgment, and proved that it had never employed the driver or owned the truck that ran over Carrel’s foot.

The high court said Friday that allowing the judgment to stand would be unjust.
