Grand Island council approves blighted land designation

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — The Grand Island City Council has voted unanimously to declare 116 acres at the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 281 and Husker Highway as blighted and substandard.

The Grand Island Independent (https://bit.ly/1dvNzH8 ) reports the 10-member council voted on the measure Tuesday.

Chief Industries, which purchased the land in 2011, asked for the land to be declared blighted and substandard so the property will be eligible for development assistance.

Previous owners Husker Retail Development LLC had announced plans in 2005 to develop the site into the Ponderosa Pointe lifestyle center. Chief Industries’ board chairman said significant costs involved for the roads, utilities and overall was one of the main deterrents to developing the land.

More Nebraska chickens will be killed to contain bird flu

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — No new cases of bird flu were found in Nebraska over the past week, but state officials say 900,000 more chickens will be slaughtered to limit the spread of the disease.

The Nebraska Agriculture Department said Tuesday the company that owns several farms where bird flu has been found agreed to kill the chickens on two other farms it owns in Dixon County as a precaution.

Including the new farms, nearly 5 million chickens are being destroyed on farms in northeast Nebraska to help control the bird flu.

Another farm in nearby Knox County with 3 million chickens remains under quarantine, but tests have not confirmed the presence of bird flu.

Nationwide, the virus has led to 47 million dead birds — mostly turkeys and egg-laying chickens.

De La Rosa, LeMahieu lead Rockies past Cardinals 4-3

DENVER (AP) — Jorge De La Rosa pitched seven strong innings to tie the Rockies’ franchise mark for wins, D.J. LeMahieu hit a tie-breaking RBI double in the seventh, and Colorado hung on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Tuesday night following another rain delay at Coors Field.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the seventh, pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario, who was batting for De La Rosa, singled off Michael Wacha. One out later, LeMahieu doubled to the centerfield wall, scoring Rosario.

Wacha (8-2) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts but gave up four runs on nine hits in 6 2-3 innings.

De La Rosa (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out eight in notching his 72nd career win with Colorado, tying Aaron Cook’s team record.

Young shines in Royals’ 2-0 win over Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chris Young took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Salvador Perez homered to help the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.

Young (5-2) left after giving up a triple to Trevor Plouffe with one out in the seventh for his only hit of the game. The 6-foot-10 right-hander struck out two and walked three to bounce back from a pair of ugly starts and put the Royals in a position to sweep the Twins on Wednesday.

Trevor May (4-4) gave up one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings for the Twins, who managed just the one hit and have scored five runs in their last four games.

On a night when San Francisco’s Chris Heston no-hit the Mets, Young looked prime to equal him as he carved up the slumping Twins lineup through six innings.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) — The chief of police in McKinney, Texas, says the actions of an officer at a pool party in the Dallas suburb were “indefensible.”

McKinney Police Chief Greg Conley made the comments during a news conference today after Officer David Eric Casebolt resigned.

A viral video showed Casebolt pushing a bikini-clad girl to the ground on Friday and brandishing his gun at other black teens after he and other officers responded to complaints about the pool party at a community-owned McKinney swimming pool.

Conley had placed the 41-year-old former Texas state trooper on administrative leave after the incident. Conley said Casebolt resigned while under investigation.

Lincoln – Senior catcher Tanner Lubach was picked by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the ninth round of the 2015 MLB Draft on Tuesday, marking the 37th straight year a Husker has been drafted.

A Lincoln native, Lubach is the highest drafted Husker since 2011, when Cody Asche was selected in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Lubach is the 26th Husker taken in the top-10 rounds since 2000 and of those 26 players, only seven had been drafted before coming to Nebraska.

Named second-team All-Big Ten this season, Lubach finished second on the team with a career-best .312 batting average. He tied for the team lead in home runs with four, hit 10 doubles, one triple and was third on the team with 26 RBIs. Lubach was even better at the plate during Big Ten play with a .369 batting average, while starting 23 of NU’s 24 league games.

A Johnny Bench Award candidate each of the last two seasons, Lubach was one of the best defensive catchers in the Big Ten during his three seasons at Nebraska. Lubach finished his career second in Husker history in runners caught stealing with 44, just two behind Cory Burleson’s school record of 46. He posted a .993 career fielding percentage, with only six errors in 918 chances. In 138 career starts, Lubach allowed just 13 passed balls, including only two in 2015.
