NPCC Lady Knight Basketball Signs Gonzalez

*Elizabeth Gonzalez from Avron, Colo. signs a national letter of intent to play basketball for North Platte Community College Lady Knights.*

The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team announced the signing of Elizabeth Gonzalez of Avron, Colorado.

Gonzalez, a 5’ 8” forward played at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards, Colorado.

Lady Knights Head Coach Dick Thurin said, “Elizabeth is a good overall player.”

Gonzalez played on the varsity team for three years averaging 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 1.0 block and 1.3 steals per game.

Gonzalez, during her senior season played in 17 games, averaged 14.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.9 steals per game. She shot 44 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range and 66 percent from the free throw line.

Gonzalez is the seventh recruit for the Lady Knights for the 2015 – 2016 season.

Chadron State Volleyball signs four more to National Letters of Intent

CHADRON – The Chadron State College volleyball team signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent head coach Chris Wells announced Tuesday. They are Sierra Winkle of Tucson, Ariz., Alyse Armstrong of Sequim, Wash., Deyhza Samuelu of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Tatyana Tuialii-Umi of South Gate, Calif.

Winkle, a 5-foot, 7-inch utility player from Sabino High School, will play at libero for the Eagles. In her senior season, she recorded 26 kills, 337 assists, 33 blocks and 106 digs. She averaged more than six digs, two assists and two aces in a club tournament in Las Vegas this year.

“Sierra comes from a high level club program that sends student-athletes to the top programs,” Wells said. “Sierra provides great defensive balance on the court as well as being a tremendous ball control player.”

Armstrong is a 5-10 southpaw setter from Sequim Senior High School and the Washington Elite Club. As a senior, she had 123 kills, 276 assists and 36 aces. In her career, she has amassed 351 kills, 999 assists, 169 aces, 555 digs and 536 blocks. Armstrong was a four year starter and was named the most valuable player for her high school all four seasons. She was selected to the All-State First Team three times and was voted the All-Oympic Peninsula MVP. In her best match last season, she put down 17 kills, 22 digs and seven aces.

“Alyse is a left handed athlete who can attack and set,” Wells said. “At 5-10 she gives us an athletic presence at the net. She is a strong blocker and has a fiery personality that will have a positive impact on our program.”

Samuelu is a 6-3 middle blocker from Edison High School. She was a member of the varsity volleyball team for two years, recording 113 kills and 101 blocks with a .214 hitting percentage. She also played club volleyball with Aiga Volleyball Club for two years with fellow recruit Tuialii-Umi. Samuelu also was a member of the varsity basketball team, as well as a club baseball team.

“Deyzha gives us a physical presence at 6 3 and great intensity and competitive spirit,” Wells said. “She is fairly young in the sport and we see phenomenal potential in her future as an Eagle.”

Tuialii-Umi is a 6-0 left-handed outside hitter from South Gate High School. She was a member of the varsity squad for three seasons. In her final season, she recorded 119 kills, 44 digs and 26 aces. She was named the Eastern League MVP two years in a row. Tuialii-Umi was also a member of the Axis Volleyball Club and Aiga Volleyball Club.

“Tatyana has tremendous athletic ability and raw power,” Wells said. “She is a left-handed kid that adds a new dimension to our team. We believe Tatyana’s ceiling is very high.”

The Eagles have now signed a total of 14 student-athletes in the offseason from seven different states. Six of the recruits hail from Colorado, two from California and another pair from Nebraska. The remaining players come from Washington, Arizona, South Dakota and Idaho.

New ball gets good reviews, but will it fly at big CWS park?

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The NCAA and people in college baseball are curious to see if the increases in home runs and scoring this season will continue at the College World Series.

In the four years the CWS has been played at TD Ameritrade Park, only 25 home runs have been hit in 59 games. Just three were hit each of the last two years, and per-team scoring dipped to three runs a game.

This year, thanks to the new flat-seam balls put into play, 135 home runs were hit in regionals and super regionals — way up from the 87 homers during the entire 2014 tournament.

While the national home-run rate has risen significantly, it held steady in the 31 games played so far this season at TD Ameritrade.

The CWS opens Saturday.

Demaryius Thomas, Antonio Smith miss minicamp for Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — As expected, Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and defensive end Antonio Smith were absent from Denver’s mandatory minicamp Tuesday.

Thomas is boycotting the Broncos’ offseason program after the team placed its $12.8 million franchise tag on him. He’s not subject to a fine because he hasn’t signed his tender. He has said he’ll attend training camp with or without a long-term deal.

Smith was absent from minicamp while prosecutors in Texas investigate a criminal complaint against him.

In addition to missing his top receiver, Peyton Manning also was without Ryan Clady, the reliable left tackle who protected his blind side. Clady tore his left ACL two weeks ago and is done for the season. Rookie Ty Sambrailo gets the first chance to win the job.

Defendant pleads guilty to Nebraska slaying of Colorado man

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — A 46-year-old man has been convicted of second-degree murder in the western Nebraska slaying of a Colorado man.

Court records say David Saxton is scheduled to be sentenced on July 27 for the slaying of 43-year-old Lonnie Sanchez, of Hoehne (HOH’-nee), Colorado. Saxton pleaded guilty Monday in Lincoln County District Court.

Sanchez’s body was found last September near a transient camp along the South Platte River near the city of North Platte. Authorities say he was beaten to death by Saxton and another man, 31-year-old Randy Nevsimal.

Nevsimal has pleaded not guilty to a count of second-degree murder. Court records don’t show a trial date has been set.

In April another co-defendant, Maybelle Collins, was given 364 days in jail. She’d been convicted of false reporting.

State Games Entries Exceed 7,000 From 46 States, 190 Nebraska Towns

LINCOLN, Neb. (June 9, 2015) — More than 7,000 athletes have registered for the 2015 State Games of America (SGA), including national qualifiers from 46 states and host-state entries from 190 different Nebraska communities.

Top five states include Nebraska (4,205), Iowa (302), Kansas (270), Texas (254) and Wisconsin (158). Four states yet to be represented include Hawaii, Maine, Vermont and West Virginia.

The largest five sports thus far include Track & Field (638), Soccer (630), Swimming (473), Figure Skating (451) and Basketball (427).

Registration remains open until July 1 for the 9^th and largest-ever edition of the national multi-sport festival, which takes place July 28-Aug. 2 in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities. Competition is offered in 67 sports and all athletes receive a shirt and Super Pass, which includes admission to Opening Ceremonies, two Athlete Villages and all competition venues.

The State Games of America is a property of the National Congress of State Games and the Nebraska Sports Council. Platinum partners include: Black Hills Energy, the Downtown Optimist Club of Lincoln, the Nebraska Tourism Commission, the Nebraska National Guard and CHI Health St. Elizabeth.

Two men sentenced for alcohol-related death of North Platte teen

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Two men who authorities say contributed to the alcohol-related death of a 17-year-old boy in Lincoln County have been sentenced.

The body of Chandler Snyder was found in a camper trailer in November 2013. Authorities say he’d been drinking heavily.

Twenty-year-old Logan Johnston was convicted of procuring alcohol to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a child. On Monday Johnston was given 60 days in jail.

Twenty-eight-year-old Martin Hanson was convicted of negligent child abuse, procuring alcohol to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a child. Hanson was sentenced to two years of probation. He also must report to county jail on Dec. 14 this year and next to serve 48 hours in jail. Dec. 14 was Snyder’s birthday.

North Platte First Nationals Pick-up Jr/Sr Sweep of Lexington

It was a great night for baseball at Bill Wood Field on Monday evening. The North Platte First Nationals hosted Lexington on First National Bank Night. The Junior Legion (12-3) started the night with a 17-2 victory and the Senior Legion (13-7) capped things off with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

Both teams in action again tonight, the Senior Legion is at home to host Hastings at 5:30 pm. The Junior Legion is on the road this evening at Hastings for a doubleheader starting at 5:30 pm.

Dawson County Raceway Results: June 7

The racing action was better than advertised, as many times the racers were three abreast during green flag racing at Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday evening. Making their way into the winners circle were: Kyle Rohleder, Cale Osborn, Casey Woken, Josh Leonard and Jacob Olmstead.

Taking the point on the eighth lap and never looking back was Wakeeney, Kansas hotshoe Kyle Rohleder in the IMCA Modified Feature. Rohleder started the contest in the third row and quickly advanced into the lead pack during the green-white-checkered flag feature. Coming from his fourth row starting position to earn a runner-up finish was the Magic Man Mike Densberger of Lincoln. Cozad’s Colton Osborn snared a third place while being among the top three throughout the feature event. Fourth place finisher Cole Hodges of Ogallala led the initial six laps of the feature. Rohleder along with Charley Brown of Maxwell were the heat race victors.

Leading the laps that matter the most in determining a winner, Cale Osborn of Cozad was able to snare the lead on the final two circuits to win the Grand National Late Model Feature event. Osborn started on the outside of the fifth row at the drop of the green flag and was able to dart inside the top five in the first laps. Crossing the finish line second after leading for the first 18 laps of the feature was veteran wheelman Bo Egge of Kearney. Making a late charge during the waning laps, Kevin Safranek of Merna was able to earn a podium finish in third place overall. Safranek was joined by Tyler Andreasen and JJ Rodeman, both of Grand Island as heat race winners in early evening late model action.

In one of the most exciting races of the evening and the 2015 season in Southwest Nebraska, Casey Woken of Norton, Kansas and Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa were racing side-by-side for the final three laps of the IMCA Stock Car Feature. At the finish line, Woken held a slight edge of less than a foot to take the checkered flag over second place finisher Mike Nichols. Woken started in the fifth row and Nichols was right behind in the sixth row at the drop of the green flag. Nichols was able to snare the lead on lap eight before the final laps showdown. Crossing the finish line third overall was Casey Werkmeister of Maywood. Leading the way prior to Nichols taking the lead was Kyle Clough of Wallace for a pair of laps after Brendan Eilts of Grand Island had led the way for the first five laps. Nichols, Clough and Werkmeister were the heat race winners in the division.

Making the move for the lead in the final laps was Josh Leonard of Gibbon to earn the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature win. Leonard led the final two laps after starting in the fifth row. Finishing in the runner-up position in the feature was Chad Dolan of Gibbon after winning the first two Features of the season at Dawson County Raceway. Leading the way for much of the feature event, Cozad’s Steve Aitken led lap two and was the pace setter until the final two laps. Aitken recovered quite nicely to earn a third place finish. Leonard, Aitken and Toph Harmon of Arapahoe were the heat race victors earlier in the evening.

Winning the second straight IMCA Hobby Stock Feature was second year superstar Jacob Olmstead of Overton. Jacob Olmstead passed his brother Zach to lead the final five laps to earn the win. Zach Olmstead was the runner-up after leading the initial nine laps of the feature. Making a run from deep in the field, Gibbon Gambler Kyle Bond was the show finisher in the feature. Michael Zerr was joined by Bond and Jacob Olmstead as heat race winners in the hobby stock divison.
