GERING, Neb. (AP) — A Gering man charged in an attack on his grandparents is also wanted in Colorado.

24-year-old Levi Hartman was back in court Friday on a fugitive warrant from Colorado. Logan County officials in Colorado say he’s wanted for fleeing police, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and criminal impersonation.

Hartman was arrested May 30 in Scottsbluff. He was charged in a Nebraska warrant with felony robbery in the case of his grandparents, John and Marsha Hegwood, who were robbed by people at their home on May 24.

Police say the grandmother was pepper-sprayed before the Hegwoods were taken to their basement and tied up. Their two vehicles, $155 cash and two credit cards were stolen.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A former Hastings High School teacher will stand trial on a charge of first-degree sexual assault of a child for an incident police say involved a student.

38-year-old Johnathan Shafer waived his preliminary hearing in Adams County Court on Friday.

Court documents say Shafer had a sexual relationship with a female student, who is now 18, beginning in 2012, when she was 15.

Shafer’s attorney, Kevin Knake, told the judge Friday that Shafer wished to waive the preliminary hearing and proceed to trial in district court because he wished to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.

If convicted, Shafer faces 15 years to life in prison.

Nebraska Bookstore in Lincoln Closing Its Doors

husker-nLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — One of Lincoln’s oldest retail establishments — and a destination for fans before home Nebraska football games — is closing its doors.

The University of Nebraska has agreed in principle to buy the Nebraska Bookstore building and real estate for $4.75 million. The NU Board of Regents will vote on that agreement Friday.

Nebraska Bookstore has operated under that name at two different sites since 1937. It was once the flagship store for its owner, Nebraska Book Co.

But the company says the bookstore is no longer performing up to expectations.

The store, which employs 20, offers Big Red clothing lines in addition to textbook rentals. It will close next week.

The university has not said how it will use the property.

Prison Problems in Nebraska Lead to New Push for Treatment

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers spent years building the state’s tough-on-crime reputation, but an overhaul approved this year reflects a new strategy.

Senators increased behavioral health services and passed sentencing reforms to keep more low-level, nonviolent offenders out of prison.

They’ve spent the last two years overhauling the justice system with expanded mental health and substance abuse programs, juvenile services, and greater post-release supervision.

Nebraska is the latest state to shift its focus to treatment and rehabilitation instead of building more prisons. The reforms follow a review by the Council of State Governments Justice Center, a national group that has worked with 21 states on prison crowding and related problems.

Marc Pelka, the group’s program director, says the changes reflect a “watershed moment” of support for new criminal justice policies.

Rangers rookie Gonzalez shuts out Royals on 3 hits, 4-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chi Chi Gonzalez threw a three-hit shutout in his second major league start as the Texas Rangers beat the skidding Kansas City Royals 4-0 Friday night.

The Royals lost for the eighth time in 10 games, while the Rangers have won six of seven and 14 of 18 to move into second place in the AL West behind Houston.

Gonzalez (2-0), the Rangers’ 2013 first-round draft pick out of Oral Roberts, has not allowed a run and yielded only five hits in 14 2-3 innings in his first two starts. He checked the Royals on three singles, walked two and struck out two.

Gonzalez worked around five walks in 5 2-3 innings to top Boston 8-0 on May 30 in his big league debut.

Mitch Moreland led off the Rangers’ three-run sixth with a homer. Robinson Chirinos celebrated his 31st birthday with a two-run single to finish right-hander Edinson Volquez’s night.
