Stanton’s long HR helps Marlins beat Rockies 6-2 in rain

DENVER (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton hit a mammoth home run, Tom Koehler pitched seven effective innings and the Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 Friday on another rain-soaked night at Coors Field.

J.T. Realmuto had a career-high four hits for the Marlins, who have won three straight.

Troy Tulowitzki had three hits for Colorado in a game delayed nearly two hours by rain.

Koehler has dominated the Rockies in four starts — three in hitter-friendly Denver. He didn’t allow a hit and faced the minimum Friday until Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez had consecutive two-out singles in the fourth.

Koehler kept throwing strikes after his teammates gave him an early lead. The Marlins scored twice in the second before Stanton made it 3-0 with a one-out shot to center off Eddie Butler (3-6).

Stanton’s drive, his 18th, traveled an estimated 478 feet.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The girlfriend of a man accused of killing his 4-year-old half-brother and his mother in Omaha has been charged as an accessory and is being held on $5 million bail.

A homicide detective testified at a hearing Friday that preliminary autopsy results on the body of 45-year-old Jesus Ismenia Marinero indicate she was alive when she was dumped in a southeast Omaha ditch.

Police think 24-year-old Gabriela Guevara helped 25-year-old Roberto Martinez-Marinero to load his mother in a car and dump her body.

Guevara has been charged with being an accessory.

Prosecutors say that if final autopsy results show Marinero was alive when she was dumped, they will charge Guevara with aiding and abetting first-degree murder.

2 Years of Tuition Hikes Proposed for University of Nebraska

college-campusLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska president is proposing tuition increases for the next two school years after two years of tuition freezes for resident students.

The university said in a news release Friday that President Hank Bounds’ proposed budget includes tuition increases of 1.75 percent for 2015-16 and 2.5 percent for 2016-17. If approved by the Board of Regents at its June 12 meeting, most Nebraska students would pay, on average, about $3.50 more per credit hour this coming school year and an additional $5 per credit hour the next school year.

The tuition freezes resulted from a 2012 deal with the Nebraska Legislature that provided a 4 percent increase in state appropriations in exchange for keeping tuition rates flat for Nebraska students.

Foul Weather Expected in Parts of the Plains During the Weekend

storm-prediction-centerNORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Forecasters are warning that severe weather could hit parts of the nation’s midsection during the weekend.

The Storm Prediction Center said there is a risk for tornadoes and very large hail in northeastern Colorado on Friday, with severe storms developing in Nebraska and Iowa during the day Saturday.

By Sunday, the storms could stretch from near the Oklahoma Panhandle into the Ohio Valley.

Heating during the day Friday could help form supercell thunderstorms in Colorado. The weather is expected to move into western Kansas in the early evening.

The threat of tornadoes during the day Saturday in the mid-Missouri River Valley is expected to evolve into a mass of storms with high winds.

Large hail and high winds are possible Sunday from northeastern New Mexico to western Ohio.

Fight the Bite: WCDHD Offers West Nile Virus Tips, Reminders

mosquitoeWest Nile Season is upon us and West Central District Health Department wants to ensure that you and your family stay protected during this season.

West Nile Virus is a disease that is spread by infected mosquitoes.

The best defense against the Virus is protecting you with repellant and not giving mosquitoes a place to lay eggs or develop.

  1. Use DEET up to 30%
  2. Wear Long Sleeves and Pants
  3. Drain Standing Water Here are some things you can do around your home.
  • Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers that have collected on your property. Pay special attention to discarded tires. Stagnant water in tires is where most mosquitoes breed.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers left outdoors.
  • Have clogged roof gutters cleaned regularly (spring & fall), particularly if the leaves from surrounding trees have a tendency to plug up the drains. Roof gutters can produce millions of mosquitoes each season.
  • Turn over plastic wading pools and wheel barrows when not in use. Don’t let water stagnate in birdbaths. These provide breeding habitats for domestic mosquitoes.
  • Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. Water gardens can become major mosquito producers if they are allowed to stagnate. Clean and chlorinate swimming pools not in use. A swimming pool left untended by a family on vacation for a month can produce enough mosquitoes to result in neighborhoodwide complaints. Mosquitoes may even breed in the water that collects on pool covers.
  • Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property. Mosquitoes may breed in any puddle that lasts for more than four days.

Reporting of dead birds is a good way to check for West Nile virus activity in the environment to allow implementation of prevention and control measures to minimize the spread of the virus.

West Nile is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. The infected birds, especially crows, are known to get sick and die from the infection. In turn, the mosquito can pass the virus to humans.

Only one type of mosquito, the common Culex variety, carries the virus.

Citizens may call WCDHD at 308- 221-6840 if they see a dead bird. Testing will only be conducted on birds that have died within 24 hours, with no evidence of maggots or rotting.

Birds may be frozen in anticipation of the delivery to WCDHD. Individuals should avoid bare-handed contact with any dead animals, and use gloves or an inverted plastic bag to place the bird carcass in a garbage bag and call WCDHD.

Google Will Make Monthly Reports on Self-Driving Cars

googleNEW YORK (AP) — Google will release monthly reports on the performance of its self-driving cars, and it disclosed summaries of the 12 accidents that involved the vehicles.

Google described all of the accidents as minor, saying no injuries were reported. The company said Friday, as it has in the past, that its cars were not to blame for any of the accidents.

The advocacy group Consumer Watchdog has pushed Google to release the accident reports, and The Associated Press has asked Google and the California Department of Motor Vehicles for the reports. Both have refused, citing privacy concerns.

The Mountain View, California-based company says the cars have driven about 1 million miles in autonomous mode since 2009, and Google’s drivers have been in control for 800,000 additional miles.

Nebraska Coordinator Tasked with Ending Sex Trafficking

prostitutionOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An attorney with more than four decades of experience has accepted a new leadership position in Nebraska’s fight against sex trafficking.

Stephen Patrick O’Meara recently started work as the human trafficking coordinator in the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

He will earn $78,750 annually in the job, which was created by a 2014 legislative bill introduced by former state Sen. Amanda McGill.

An organization working to end human trafficking gave Nebraska a D last year for its policies in helping stop the illegal practice. That grade was an improvement from the F it received in 2011.

Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson says he hopes the new position helps increase the state’s rating.
