Arenado’s sac fly lifts Rockies to 7-6 win over Dodgers

DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on a rainy Wednesday night.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Arenado sent a fly to left-center. Chris Heisey caught it and threw home, but DJ LeMahieu slid in easily. Arenado was mobbed by teammates after the Rockies overcame a two-run deficit in the ninth.

John Axford (1-0) earned the win following two rain delays that totaled 2 hours, 26 minutes.

Yimi Garcia (2-2) was one of four relievers in the final inning for the Dodgers, but they couldn’t hold the lead.

Joc Pederson homered in his fifth straight game, becoming the first Dodgers player to do so in a single season since Matt Kemp in 2010, according to STATS.

Vargas sharp, Royals beat up Kluber in 4-2 win over Indians

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jason Vargas tossed six sharp innings, the Kansas City offense finally woke up against AL Cy Young winner Corey Kluber and the Royals beat the Cleveland Indians 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Mike Moustakas drove in a run in the first inning, and Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer and Kendrys Morales hit consecutive RBI doubles off Kluber (3-6) in the third to give the Royals the lead.

Vargas (4-2) made it stand up in his second start back from the disabled list. The left-hander used a pair of double plays to wiggle out of jams, and limited the streaking Indians to two runs on eight hits while striking out three without a walk.

Greg Holland pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

MLB apologizes to Royals for costly glitch in replay system

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Major League Baseball has apologized to the Kansas City Royals for a breakdown in its replay process during a crucial moment in a 2-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

The issue occurred in the eighth inning of a tied game Tuesday night, when first base umpire Bob Davidson ruled the Indians’ Jose Ramirez had beaten out a relay throw to prevent a double play. Replays showed Ramirez was out, but the call stood after a nearly 3-minute review.

The Indians wound up scoring the go-ahead run later in the inning.

MLB said Wednesday that the “super slow motion view” was delayed in getting to the replay crew in New York, so umpires there had to render a decision without that information.

Jordan Lyles to undergo season-ending surgery on big toe

Jordan Lyles Colorado RockiesDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies pitcher Jordan Lyles will have season-ending surgery to fix a torn ligament in his left big toe.

The right-hander is scheduled to have the procedure next Wednesday in Denver for what he described as “Tommy John (surgery) for my big toe.”

Lyles initially hurt his toe May 23 and tried to pitch through the discomfort. He re-aggravated the injury when he tried to avoid a line-drive single up the middle Sunday in Philadelphia. Lyles is 2-5 with a 5.14 ERA this season.

The 24-year-old missed two months last season with a fractured left hand. Asked if he felt a little unlucky lately on the injury front, Lyles simply said: “I just have to deal with it. It’s unfortunate.”

Nebraska Psychologist Accused of Sex with Ex-Client Loses License

State Seal of NebraskaNORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — A Norfolk psychologist accused of having sex with a former patient has surrendered his license for a year.

State records say Dr. Kevin Piske agreed to a license suspension, which began in April. The settlement agreement says Piske didn’t admit or deny any allegations in the state petition for discipline. State regulations regarding professional conduct bar psychologists from having sex with patients or former patients.

The petition says Piske had worked at the state’s Norfolk Regional Center and had a private practice. He’d treated the patient between 1996 and 1999. She contacted him in 2001 and began seeing and talking to him, but not as a patient.

The petition says the two began a sexual relationship in 2003, a relationship that stopped and started again over several years, through 2013.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A surgeon whose medical license has been suspended has been accused of impaired driving and of hit-and-run in Lincoln.

52-year-old Scott Strasburger, who played football for Nebraska from 1981 to 1984, was arrested Tuesday. His attorney in an unrelated civil case didn’t immediately return a call Wednesday from The Associated Press.

Police say Strasburger crashed into a parked vehicle on Tuesday afternoon and drove off, and then crashed into another vehicle stopped in traffic just a few minutes later. The driver of that vehicle told police she recognized Strasburger and suspected he was high on drugs.

Police later contacted Strasburger at his home.

Strasburger’s medical license was suspended for six months late last year on accusations that he’d been practicing medicine while impaired.

South Dakota Man Accused Stealing Rural Lincoln County Family’s Car, Setting Up Camp

Craig Halstead

A South Dakota man is in jail in Lincoln County after a rather strange series of events on Tuesday night.

At around 9:20 p.m., deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on East Golden Road.

The property owner had reported that there were a pickup and camper parked on his property, and he didn’t know who it belonged to.

The victim told deputies that he approached the pickup and camper and found them both to be unoccupied.

A short time later, a male subject, unknown to the victim, drove up in one of the family’s cars, and was wearing a hat and gloves that belonged to the victim’s wife.

After noticing that the male subject, later identified as Craig Halstead, had a gun, the victim left the area and contacted law enforcement.

Deputies located Halstead in his camper, along with several firearms and property belonging to the victim.

Halstead was detained and transported to the Lincoln County Detention Center, where he was jailed on charges of trespassing, unauthorized use of a vehicle, felony theft, felony possession of stolen property and use of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

Deputies say the investigation is ongoing.
