Boat Launch Improvements Begin at Merritt Reservoir

merritt-reservoirLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Crews have started work on improvements to a boat launch facility at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area in northern Nebraska.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says visitors will find construction equipment at the Main Landing boat launch and Willow Cove Campground areas over the next few months.

A new concrete ramp, boat dock and breakwaters will be built this summer and fall as water levels recede. To prepare for that construction, the delivery of rock rip-rap has started.

The new boat ramp will be built just to the south of the existing one.

Merritt Reservoir SRA is located 26 miles southwest of Valentine in Cherry County. A park entry permit is required of each vehicle entering the park.

Morales, Gordon power Royals past A’s

kc-royalsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon homered to back Edinson Volquez, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 5-2 on Friday night.

Unlike when these two teams met in April, when there were bench-clearing scuffles in all three games, there were no signs of lingering animosity. A few players from both clubs exchanged hugs and handshakes before the game, and both managers downplayed talk of any carry-over effect.

Instead the Royals rode the power of Morales and Gordon, and got another strong outing from Volquez.

Pitching against the A’s for the first time since 2007, Volquez (8-4) gave up three hits and one run in seven innings. Volquez also reached 1,000 strikeouts for his career when he fanned Brett Lawrie in the sixth.

Sam Fuld had an RBI double for Oakland, which had its five-game win streak snapped.

Nebraska’s Strict Same-Sex Union Ban Struck Down

supreme-court-same-sex-marriageOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Gay couples in Nebraska will now have their marriages legally recognized in the state that has had one of the most restrictive same-sex union bans in the country.

With the U.S. Supreme Court declaring Friday that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States, couples who have long sought the right to marry in Nebraska are celebrating.

Bil Roby and Greg Tubach, of Lincoln, plan to apply for a marriage license as soon as possible. They are among seven same-sex couples who sued last year to try to force the state to recognize their marriages, challenging the constitutionality of the state’s ban, approved by 70 percent of voters in 2000. In addition to prohibiting gay marriage, it also forbid civil unions and outlawed domestic partnerships.

Court Reverses Denial of Prisoner’s Request to Sue as Pauper

ne-supreme-courtLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has reversed a ruling that denied a prisoner’s request to sue prosecutors and other attorneys without having to pay the costs of his claim.

The court said in a ruling Friday that a Lancaster County judge erred when she denied the inmate’s request for legal status as a pauper.

The inmate, Paul Castonguay, was convicted of first-degree sexual assault in Douglas County but filed his complaint against prosecutors, public defenders and two other attorneys in Lancaster County.

Judge Stephanie Stacy denied his request for pauper status on her own accord after concluding that Lancaster County wasn’t the proper venue for the case.
