Inspector Orders Closure of 2 Wading Pools in Hastings

swimming-poolHASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Concerns over a missing safety feature have prompted the closure of two wading pools in Hastings.

A state inspector closed the pools at Heartwell and Lincoln parks Monday after finding their safety vacuum release systems were removed five years ago. The systems stop water circulation if something blocks a drain.

City Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hassenstab says the systems were removed because they were deemed unnecessary after anti-entrapment covers were installed at the pools. A previous inspector agreed to that move but a new inspector visited this summer and decided the extra safety measure was needed.

Hassenstab called it “kind of frustrating,” but says the new equipment should arrive Monday.

The pools will reopen after being cleared by the inspector.
