FALLS CITY, Neb. (AP) — A former Richardson County Sheriff’s deputy who accidentally shot himself last year and then lied about now faces charges of first-degree sexual assault and child abuse.

26-year-old Joshua Nincehelser has been charged with first-degree sexual assault and child abuse. Authorities say he sexually assaulted a girl younger than 12 earlier this year.

In January, Nincehelser was sentenced to three years of probation and 180 days of community service for lying when he said someone he had pulled over shot him on a rural road near Humboldt in June 2014.

He later admitted he had accidentally shot himself, then fired several shots into his cruiser to make his story look real.
