Nebraska Lawsuit Challenging Pipeline to Get Hearing

keystone-xl-pipelineOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A hearing is scheduled Monday in the Nebraska lawsuit challenging a Canadian company’s efforts to build an oil pipeline across the Plains to the Gulf Coast.

The landowners are challenging the validity of the state law that authorized TransCanada’s proposed route through the state for the Keystone XL pipeline.

The proposed pipeline needs President Barack Obama’s approval before it could be built across Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska to connect with existing pipelines. It would carry more than 33.6 million gallons of oil daily.

TransCanada has said that 90 percent of Nebraska landowners along the Keystone XL route — and 100 percent of those in Montana and South Dakota — have agreed to easements to build the pipeline.

Royals celebrate Cueto deal with 5-1 victory over Astros

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals traded for Johnny Cueto, and then used Yordano Ventura’s seven sharp innings to beat Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros 5-1 on Sunday.

Ventura (5-7) allowed one run and six hits in just his second win in his last seven starts. The right-hander, who won 14 games last year, was demoted to Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday and then recalled the next day after the Royals learned left-hander Jason Vargas would miss the rest of the year with an elbow injury.

The Royals announced during the game that they had acquired Cueto from Cincinnati for minor league left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed, drawing a big cheer at Kauffman Stadium.

Rockies hit 5 homers, power way to 17-7 win over Reds

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado, Ben Paulsen and Carlos Gonzalez each homered in a 10-run third inning Sunday to help the Colorado Rockies beat Cincinnati 17-7 on a day when the Reds traded ace Johnny Cueto.

It was a big afternoon for Paulsen, who finished with a career-high four hits that included a triple and two solo homers. Gonzalez also had two homers and drove in a career-best six runs.

Colorado had eight hits in the third, including back-to-back homers by Arenado and Paulsen, to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 12-4 lead. The last time the Rockies scored double-digits in an inning was April 27, 2012, when they had 11 runs against the New York Mets.

Michael Lorenzen (3-5) was roughed up for eight runs in 2 1-3 innings. He allowed two of Colorado’s five homers.

Staked to a big lead, Kyle Kendrick (4-11) yielded six runs in five shaky innings for his first win since June 23.

Before the game, Cincinnati finalized a deal that sent Cueto to the Kansas City Royals for three pitching prospects.

FREMONT, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say an eastern Nebraska man shot and killed his daughter’s ex-boyfriend when the 22-year-old tried to visit the woman at her parent’s home.

The Dodge County Sheriff’s office says Tyler Childs, of Fremont, was fatally shot late Friday when he visited a mobile home where his ex-girlfriend was living with her parents.

Sheriff Steven Hespen says Childs was confronted by his ex-girlfiend’s father, 42-year-old Walter Campo, when he went to the home.

Hespen says Campo had a handgun, and during a confrontation, Childs was fatally shot.

Campo is being held on suspicion of manslaughter and a weapons charge.

South Dakota Regulators to Hear Keystone XL Arguments Again

keystonePIERRE, S.D. (AP) — State regulators are considering whether to approve for the second time in just over five years construction through South Dakota of the long-delayed Keystone XL oil pipeline, but it’s unlikely a decision will come immediately.

The Public Utilities Commission hearing process starts Monday. The state authorized TransCanada Corp.’s project in 2010, but permits must be revisited if construction doesn’t start within four years.

Commission Chairman Chris Nelson says it’s unlikely the panel will come to a decision immediately.

He says TransCanada will present its case first, and then opponents will offer their side. Supporters say the pipeline will create jobs and tax revenues, while opponents argue it could contaminate water supplies.

The pipeline would transport oil from Canada to Nebraska, where it would connect with existing pipelines headed to the Gulf Coast.

‘Ant Man’ Inches Past ‘Pixels’ to Take First Place Spot

box-officeLOS ANGELES (AP) — “Ant-Man” has claimed first place at the box office for the second weekend in a row, narrowly besting new opener “Pixels.” The Marvel and Disney superhero pic brought in $24.8 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $106.1 million according to Rentrak estimates Sunday.

The Adam Sandler end of the world comedy “Pixels” earned an estimated $24 million in its debut weekend. It’s a fairly weak start for the PG-13 rated film, which cost $88 million to produce.

Meanwhile, the R-rated boxing drama “Southpaw” surpassed expectations, earning $16.5 million out of the gates and beating out the YA adaptation “Paper Towns,” which earned about $12.5 million — a far cry from the $48 million debut of “The Fault in Our Stars” last year.

York will pay $988,332 for the work at the I-80 tower and a second one near the high school.

Nebraska Man, 85, Says Mail Carrier Saved His Life

good-newsSCHUYLER, Neb. (AP) — An 85-year-old Nebraska man credits a mail carrier with saving his life on a recent hot day after he fell in the yard.

Marvin Skarda didn’t let the summer heat keep him from doing his yard work.

But after mowing the back yard on July 17, Skarda fell over while trying to pick weeds because of the pain of a recent rib injury. Skarda says he didn’t have the strength to get up and with his neighbors all at work, he didn’t think he would survive.

Fortunately 24-year-old Aaron Muller heard Skarda’s cries for help from across the street while delivering mail.

Muller helped Skarda up and even returned at the end of his route to make sure he was OK.
