US Gas Prices Down a Penny in Past 2 Weeks

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of gasoline has dropped a penny over the past two weeks to $2.82 a gallon.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that the current average sits 76 cents below the year-ago price.

The cheapest price recorded in the continental United States was $2.33 a gallon in Birmingham, Alabama.

The highest was $4.13 a gallon in Los Angeles. Lundberg says California saw huge wholesale price hikes during a brief supply shortage. She says supplies are flowing again and pump prices are poised to drop in the Golden State.

The national average price of diesel was down 6 cents over the same period to $2.86 a gallon.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have acquired ace right-hander Johnny Cueto in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds, bolstering their chances of returning to the World Series.

The Royals began the day with the best record in the American League. Now they add Cueto to a rotation that lost Jason Vargas to a season-ending elbow injury last week.

The scuffling Reds received left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed in Sunday’s deal. Finnegan was Kansas City’s first-round pick in last year’s draft.

Cueto, who is eligible for free agency after the season, was one of the top starters on the market. He pitched eight scoreless innings in Cincinnati’s 5-2 victory at Colorado on Saturday.

Cueto won 20 games last season and is 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 19 starts this year.

Lincoln County Raceway Fair Races Results

lincoln-county-raceway-resultsWinning at the County Fair is easier said than done, especially when the action is jam-packed with door-to-door racing during the Lincoln County Fair Races at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte, Nebraska on Saturday evening.

Colton Osborn, Denny Egge, Casey Werkmeister, Jacob Olmstead and Brad Bayne were able to out run the challengers to score trips to the Winners Circle. Grabbing the lead on lap five and holding off all challenges was Colton Osborn of Cozad, Nebraska. Osborn was in the lead pack from the onset and garnered the lead early and never looked back to win the IMCA Modified Feature. Maxwell’s Charley Brown was the runner-up finisher in the feature after moving past third place finisher David Murray Jr of Oberlin, Kansas during the white flag lap. Murray went to the top shelf in an effort to make a pass on Osborn for the lead, but the marbles caused Murray to drop back to third place where he would still garner a podium finish. Cole Hodges of Ogallala and Ft. Morgan’s Jeremy Frenier rounded out your top five in the feature event.

Nebraska’s Water Management Catches Eye of Other States

groundwaterLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s system for managing its groundwater is catching the eye of other states that are running dry and threatening farmers with water restrictions.

Despite its widespread use for crop irrigation, Nebraska’s groundwater supply has remained stable while states such as California and Texas struggle with shortages. The difference has led some out-of-state groups to inquire about how Nebraska uses 23 natural resources districts to manage groundwater while the Department of Natural Resources oversees rivers and lakes.

Dean Edson, of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts, says he’s received inquiries from half a dozen states and is scheduled to speak about Nebraska’s system in California next month.

Jim Schneider, acting director of the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources, will discuss the state’s groundwater management system before a national group in November.
