Nebraska Prison Inmates Collected $156K in Unemployment

prisonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska state officials say prison inmates collected more than $156,000 in unemployment benefits because of miscommunication among agencies.

The departments announced Thursday that more than 180 inmates claimed benefits between 2013 and 2015, despite a law that prohibits them from doing so. One inmate received $4,300 in unemployment benefits.

The Department of Labor says it previously wasn’t able to tell when a person was incarcerated, but the agency has launched a new crackdown effort with the Department of Correctional Services and the Nebraska Crime Commission.

Commissioner of Labor John Albin says the state will recover the money through wage levies or by offsetting tax refunds.

Claimants who fraudulently collect unemployment benefits are responsible for paying back the benefits plus a 15 percent penalty, and may face prosecution.

Patient’s Death Blamed on Nebraska Hospital’s Treatment

Medical-ChartWINNEBAGO, Neb. (AP) — A federal report says inadequate treatment at a hospital in northeast Nebraska resulted in one death earlier this year and harm to at least nine other patients.

The Winnebago Indian Health Service Hospital in Winnebago is scheduled to lose its Medicare and Medicaid funding Thursday as a result of what the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says are treatment deficiencies.

The report issued after a survey team’s visit in May cited the case of a patient who reported extreme back pain on Dec. 30, 2014. He was sent home. A hospital staff member then left him a voicemail telling him his kidneys were failing and did not attempt to make additional contact. The patient died Jan. 1 at his sister’s house.

Broadwater Woman Reported Missing Located in Another State

According to other media sources, a Broadwater woman reported missing by her family members has been located in another state.

The Morrill County Sheriff’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol, following up on an out-of-state lead, were able to make contact with 20 year old Jessica Cook Wednesday night.

Deputy Sheriff Cheree Fisher told KNEB News late Wednesday night that authorities were able to ping Cook’s cell phone based on information obtained when following up on a phone call the woman’s family received earlier Wednesday evening.

Fisher said that they alerted law enforcement from the other agency, which she only described as from ‘another state.’ Those officers were able to make personal contact with Cook.

“She was in good condition,” Fisher said. “She was by herself and had every opportunity to leave with those officers, but she didn’t want to. Therefore, the case is closed.”

Prior to that time, Cook was last seen around 6:30 p.m. Sunday night after leaving a Bridgeport convenience store. Her family reported her missing late Monday night, and a search for her began Tuesday morning.

The search intensified Wednesday as a Nebraska State Patrol airplane flew over the area and officers from multiple agencies combed rural areas of the large county.

Fisher said that no charges are expected, as the woman is not a minor and no crime had been committed.

Adidas Unveils 2015 Huskers Alternate Uniforms

Adidas has unveiled the new alternate uniforms for the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the upcoming college football season. The Huskers will don the new look on October 24 when they host Northwestern at Memorial Stadium.

Adidas described the new look and design features in a Thursday morning press release.

Centered around a bold, black colorway, the new look features metallic red numbers with a forged steel outline, combined with a modernized, metallic version of the classic Nebraska stripes that accent the jersey and pants. Providing form and function, the numbers and stripes are serrated, allowing for maximum ventilation and range of motion. Additional detailing includes an oversized, bold “N” logo that is integrated into the pant stripe to match the logo on the helmet and the “Huskers” team moniker is subtlety woven into the fabric on the side of the jerseys.

Made with a cutting-edge, proprietary yarn blend that increases durability and abrasion resistance, Primeknit is the premier compression uniform system, featuring the latest generation of adidas TECHFIT technology. Primeknit helps keep players cool and increases range of motion, giving athletes an unrivaled level of comfort and allowing them to perform at their highest levels. The jersey’s padlock system secures tension over the shoulder pads, while the bodymap fit adheres to the player, making it difficult for opponents to grab, hold or tackle.

Rounding out the new look is the new Husker Bold alternative black matte shell helmet, featuring metallic red logos, stripes and player numbers on the back – identical to the jersey, and a metallic red facemask. Additionally, the head-to-toe package includes the adizero 5-Star 4.0 gloves and TECHFIT gun show baselayer – both prominently featuring the “N” logo, along with the adizero 5-Star 4.0 cleats.

The adizero 5-Star 4.0, lighter than any competitor cleat at 8.0 ounces, has a SPRINTSKIN upper with SHOCKWEB reinforcement and a SPRINTFRAME plate that provides maximum acceleration and multi-directional traction, while the adizero 5-Star 4.0 gloves, feature 4-way stretch mesh for compression fit and GripTack 2.0 for consistent control in all weather conditions.
