KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have placed left-hander Jason Vargas on the disabled list with a torn ligament in his elbow, an injury that typically requires season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Vargas left his start against Pittsburgh on Tuesday night after throwing just 26 pitches. He had an MRI on Wednesday that revealed the extent of the injury.

The Royals filled his spot in the rotation by recalling Yordano Ventura. The hard-throwing right-hander had been sent to Triple-A Omaha just a day earlier to work on his inconsistency and rebuild some confidence after a string of poor starts.

Vargas, who is 5-2 with a 3.98 ERA, was instrumental in the Royals’ run to the World Series a year ago. He went 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA in three postseason starts.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Parents have been told the Lincoln federal building poses no dangers to children enrolled in the child care center there.

U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse had voiced concerns last week when he learned that an internal audit showed the National Soil Survey Center laboratory in the building was not in compliance with safety and fire codes.

Allison Azevedo with the General Services Administration and Soil Service Center director John Hempel met Tuesday with about 20 parents. Azevedo told them that all safety issues regarding storage of radioactive and flammable materials were resolved as soon as the survey center learned of them. She says the children “are in no imminent danger of anything associated with the lab.”

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A summer camp counselor suspects recent flooding may have helped unearth or carry to Lincoln a baseball-sized tooth believed to belong to a baby mammoth.

Wilderness Park Nature Camp counselor Colleen Zajac discovered the tooth lying on a muddy bank while leading young day-campers during a Tuesday exploration along Salt Creek.

Camp leaders say they had paleontologists verify the tooth belonged to a baby mammoth. Camp director Ted Hobrich says it hasn’t been decided yet if the tooth will be offered to researchers for further examination.

Around 60 children ages 7 through 9 participate in the program and are divided into six groups. The camp started in June.

Columbus Man Takes Deal in Platte County Counterfeiting Case

bad_moneyCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A 37-year-old Columbus man has taken a plea deal and been convicted of forgery in a Platte County counterfeiting case.

Online court records say Brian Dieter pleaded guilty Monday to two felony counts of forgery. Prosecutors dropped 13 other forgery counts and one of being a habitual criminal in exchange for Dieter’s pleas. His sentencing is set for Sept. 4.

Court documents say surveillance video showed Dieter exchanging the counterfeit bills on Feb. 8 at a convenience store where his girlfriend, Stacy Ballou, was working as a clerk. Ballou was sentenced last week to two years of probation. She also was given 120 days in jail, to be served in 30-day increments unless waived by the court.
