Canadian-Owned Infidelity Website Suffers Cyber Attack

youve-been-hackedTORONTO (AP) — A Canadian-owned dating website for married people seeking affairs says it has suffered a cyberattack after hackers claimed to have stolen confidential customer information, threatening to publish it unless the company is shut down.

Avid Life Media, which owns Toronto-based site AshleyMadison.com, said Monday that it had taken steps to secure its sites.

Ashley Madison, whose slogan is “Life is short. Have an affair,” claims it has more than 37 million anonymous worldwide members.

Online security blog KrebsOnSecurity.com posted what appeared to be a screenshot of the site’s home page on Sunday bearing a message from the hackers, who said they acted to expose alleged lies Ashley Madison told customers about a service that allows members to erase profile information.

Nebraska senior track and field athlete John Welk has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, in addition to the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship he received earlier this year.

A native of Bismarck, N.D., Welk was the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for men’s track and field, becoming the first Husker track and field athlete to earn that honor. He graduated in May with a degree in nutrition science and 3.99 GPA. Earlier this year, Welk was named Nebraska’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year and the Big Ten Medal of Honor winner.

Welk was a two-time All-American as part of NU’s 4×100-meter relay team for Coach Gary Pepin’s men’s track and field squad. He was also a two-time NCAA Elite 89 award winner with the best GPA at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Welk garnered three academic All-Big Ten accolades in his standout Husker career and added a third Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honor this summer.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The $7,500 scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.

Books Stolen from Little Free Library in Lincoln

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say books have been stolen from six Little Free Libraries around Lincoln in less than a week.

Megan Ockander noticed that more than half the 40 books were taken from the Little Free Library she tends and said Sunday that five other Little Free Libraries also have been hit by a thief or thieves.

Lincoln Police Capt. Danny Reitan says that without more evidence, such as video footage, there is little his department can do.

The Little Free Library organization says a Little Free Library basically is a box of books where anyone may stop and pick up a book or two and bring back another book to share. The books are free to readers.

Bellevue Plans to Move Into New City Hall by 2016

city-of-bellevueBELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — A building that’s now occupied by a defense contractor likely will serve as Bellevue’s new City Hall by late 2016.

BAE Systems told the city last week that it plans to vacate the building by March 31 after deciding not to extend its lease. The building is one of three in an office complex that the city purchased for almost $4 million in 2012.

The city’s finance director, Rich Severson, says that after BAE Systems moves out, it probably will take a few months for renovations and for city government operations to move out of the current City Hall, which was built in the 1970s.

Severson says that around $250,000 has been set aside for the building’s renovation work.
