Nuggets trade Ty Lawson to Rockets

Update: The Denver Nuggets have traded point guard Ty Lawson to the Houston Rockets.

The Nuggets receive a lottery protected first-round pick in 2016 and cash considerations along with Nick Johnson, Kostas Papanikolaou, Pablo Prigioni and Joey Dorsey in the deal that also sends a 2017 second-round pick to Houston.

Lawson would give the Rockets needed depth at point guard with Patrick Beverley, though is currently dealing with off-the-court issues. He entered a 30-day residential treatment program for alcohol last week after his second DUI arrest.

Historic Omaha Mansion Damaged by Fire to Be Demolished

fireOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An historic midtown Omaha mansion built more than a century ago and damaged by fire will be demolished.

The owner of the Arthur Metz mansion — built in the early 1900s for a member of the Metz brewery family — plans to redevelop the site for residential use, either as apartments or a house.

The three-story mansion just outside the Gold Coast Historic District sustained heavy damage Jan. 12 in a two-alarm fire. No one was injured, and investigators say it was caused by a space heater used to prevent pipes from freezing.

The mansion is not a designated local landmark, and Assistant City Planning Director Jay Davis told neighborhood leaders on Friday that there were no grounds to stop demolition.

City of Lincoln Seeing Recent Restaurant Boom

city-of-lincolnLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s capital city is seeing a boom in chain restaurants.

Work began this week on a Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. Franchise owner Ron Oberg says it will be a new concept store that likely will be the biggest Freddy’s restaurant in the country, with seating for more than 150 people and a double drive-thru lane.

He hopes to have the restaurant open by the first or second week of November.

It’s one a string of restaurants either being built or recently opened in Lincoln. That includes Las Vegas-based sandwich chain Capriotti’s, Chick-fil-A, BurgerFi, Dunkin’ Donuts, Slim Chickens and Tom+Chee. Several other restaurants already established in the college town are expanding.

Families Hit by Rare Alzheimer’s Push for Research

Medical-ChartWASHINGTON (AP) — The rarest form of Alzheimer’s ravages generations as families pass down gene mutations that trigger the disease in people in their 30s, 40s or 50s.

Now, ahead of a major Alzheimer’s research meeting, dozens of these families met face to face for the first time, and asked government and drug company officials why it’s taking so long to find a good treatment.

Alzheimer’s usually strikes older adults, and the toll is growing as the population ages.

But these rare, gene-affected families hold crucial clues to fighting the brain-destroying disease in everyone.

Alzheimer’s brain damage begins decades before symptoms begin. Scientists now think the best hope may be taking experimental drugs early to stall, if not prevent, that damage.

Gene carriers destined to get sick are part of one major study.

Taylor says she thinks the case can still be solved if the right person talks to police.

Dickson was fatally shot on July 21, 2009, on his way home. He was the father of seven children.

Nebraska Lawmakers to Look at School Aid’s Impact on Property Taxes

school-fundingLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers are once again looking to lower property taxes, but this time they’re turning to the single largest expense on landowners’ tax bills: school funding.

Senators will review the state’s school-aid formula next month to consider new funding options, including a possible boost in state aid or new revenue sources that would allow school districts to lower their levies.

Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids says she’s hopeful the review will lead to legislation next year that can help lower property taxes while preserving school funding.

Sullivan, the chairwoman of the Education Committee, says lawmakers will use a facilitator with mediation experience to try to reach an agreement between urban and rural senators, who are often at odds over school funding.
