1 Person Injured When Car Runs Into Nebraska Grocery

police-lights-redPIERCE, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say one person was injured when a car crashed through the front door of a northeast Nebraska grocery store.

The crash happened at the Home Town Market in Pierce at about 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses say it appeared the driver was attempting to park her car, and hit the accelerator instead of the brake, crashing into the front of the store.

The driver was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Family Friend Arrested on Suspicion of Killing Omaha Woman

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police have arrested an Omaha man believed to have killed a 28-year-old woman whose body was found inside her home on June 25.

Police say they believe Jessyka Nelson was killed by 27-year-old Matthew Kidder, who was a longtime friend of Nelson’s family.

Kidder is being held in the Douglas County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and a weapons count.

Police have not said how Nelson was killed, only that a weapon other than a gun was used to kill her.

Kidder was convicted in 2008 of attempted first-degree sexual assault and sentenced to five to 10 years in prison. He was released in June 2013.

Barmes, Hedges homer to give Padres 5-4 win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesSAN DIEGO (AP) — Clint Barmes hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh and rookie catcher Austin Hedges homered and threw out a runner for the San Diego Padres, who beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4 Saturday night for their fourth straight win.

The Padres, who have underperformed after general manager A.J. Preller revamped the roster in a series of dazzling offseason moves, matched their season-high winning streak. They also won four straight from June 2-6.

The game was tied at 3 in the seventh when pinch-hitter Melvin Upton Jr. drew a leadoff walk off Christian Friedrich (0-2). Tommy Kahnle came on and allowed Barmes’ homer to deep left.

The Rockies closed to 5-4 on Troy Tulowitzki’s homer to deep left off Joaquin Benoit with one out in the eighth.

Brandon Maurer (6-2) got one out for the win. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 25th save.

Cain homers in 13th inning, lifts Royals over White Sox

kc-royalsCHICAGO (AP) — Lorenzo Cain homered in the 13th inning and the Kansas City Royals outlasted the Chicago White Sox 7-6 Saturday in a game that took nearly five hours.

The AL Central-leading Royals won for the 10th time in 13 games.

Cain doubled and singled early, then led off the 13th with his ninth home run of the season. He connected against Dan Jennings (1-3).

Brandon Finnegan (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings in the four-hour, 56-minute game. Ryan Madson earned his first save in three chances after allowing a single in the 13th.

The Royals finished with 17 hits, including five doubles.

Shields wins for 1st time in 6 weeks as Padres down Rockies

colorado-rockiesSAN DIEGO (AP) — James Shields won for the first time in six weeks, and Matt Kemp, Jedd Gyorko and Justin Upton homered to lead the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 victory against the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.

The Padres, who have underperformed despite making several big offseason acquisitions, have won three straight following a six-game losing streak.

Shields (8-3) won for the first time since beating the New York Mets 7-0 on June 3. He had four no-decisions and a three-start losing streak in his last seven starts. He allowed one run and seven hits in five innings, struck out six and walked four.

Shields, who signed a $75 million, four-year free-agent contract in February, allowed a homer to Charlie Blackmon leading off the fifth that made it 3-1. Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save.

Jorge De La Rosa (6-4) took the loss.

Danks pitches into 7th, White Sox beat Royals 2-0 for split

kc-royalsCHICAGO (AP) — John Danks pitched four-hit ball into the seventh, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 Friday to split a day-night doubleheader.

The White Sox shook off a 4-2 loss in the opener to win for the 10th time in 14 games, with Danks (5-8) dominating on the mound.

Avisail Garcia tripled and scored on a single by Tyler Flowers in the second inning. Melky Cabrera doubled and came in from third on a wild pitch by Edinson Volquez (8-5).

Danks exited to loud cheers with a 2-0 lead after he walked Alex Rios leading off the seventh.

In the opener, Mike Moustakas hit a solo homer in the fifth on the 12th pitch of the at-bat to give the Royals a 2-1 lead, and Alex Rios capped a two-run sixth with his drive off Jeff Samardzija after Chicago tied it.

Police: Stuffed Toy Cushions Colorado Girl’s 3-Story Fall

ambulance-lightsCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Police in Colorado say a stuffed toy helped save a 5-year-old girl’s life after she fell out of a third-story apartment window.

The girl broke her arm, but Colorado Springs police say she held on to the toy and it cushioned her fall Thursday night.

Police said the girl was playing in her room when she fell backward out her bedroom window. She dropped about three stories to the ground.

The girl was treated and released, and authorities ruled the fall accidental.

The toy was a Minion, small, yellow creatures popularized by the animated film “Despicable Me.”

 

Nebraska DHHS Leader Promises to Improve Benefits Service

accessnebraskaLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The new CEO of Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services is promising to improve the state’s troubled public benefits service, while a leading critic is calling for more oversight.

Department CEO Courtney Phillips told a legislative oversight committee Friday that she remains committed to getting the system working as intended.

Her comments came at a hearing over ACCESS Nebraska, a telephone and online service that residents use to apply for and renew public benefits. The system has faced criticism because of long call-wait times, errors and lost paperwork.

A staff attorney for Nebraska Appleseed, an advocacy group that is suing over the delays, says she’s hopeful the department can improve standards and staff training, but urged lawmakers to continue their oversight.

Omaha Man Whose Tattoos Tied Him to Robberies Gets Prison

jailOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man whose tattoos linked him to two bank robberies in 2014 has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg says in a news release Friday that 38-year-old Kevin M. Lee was sentenced to four years and nine months. He has been ordered to pay $1,400 in restitution and will serve three years of supervised release.

Lee was accused of entering two separate banks in Omaha in November and passing notes to tellers seeking money. Law enforcement linked him to the crimes when Lee was contacted on an unrelated matter and agents noted that tattoos on his fingers matched surveillance pictures from one of the bank robberies.

Rios, Moustakas homer as Royals beat White Sox 4-2

kc-royalsCHICAGO (AP) — Alex Rios and Mike Moustakas homered, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 Friday in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader.

On a scorching afternoon when the ball was carrying, the AL Central leaders took out a team showing some spark after struggling most of the way.

Moustakas hit a solo homer in the fifth to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Rios capped a two-run sixth with his drive off Jeff Samardzija (6-5) after Chicago tied it.

All-Star Lorenzo Cain had two hits, including an RBI double for the Royals. He is 21 for 42 in his past 11 games.

Chris Young (8-5) gave up two runs and three hits, including solo homers to Geovany Soto and Adam Eaton, in five innings.

Closer Greg Holland gave up a pinch-hit single to Emilio Bonifacio with one out in the ninth before finishing for his 20th save.
