Commission Sets 2015 Early Teal Dates at July 16 Meeting in Sidney

game-and-parks-featureLINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission set the 2015 early teal season dates at its July 16 meeting in Sidney. The teal hunting season will be Sept. 5-20 in the Low Plains and Sept. 12-20 in the High Plains.

Teal hunting season dates are set to coincide with the teal migration through Nebraska, and the opening day is typically the Saturday following Labor Day. This year, because Labor Day is Sept. 7, an earlier opening day in the Low Plains was recommended to accommodate a 16-day season while avoiding conflicts with possible youth and regular duck season openers later in September and October. Regular duck and goose season dates will be considered at the Aug. 28 Commission meeting in Burwell.

County Attorney Finds Douglas County Deputies Were Justified in Shooting

officer-involved-shootingOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine says the actions of two deputies during an encounter last month that led to a man’s shooting were justified because their lives were threatened.

He said Wednesday that he has found no wrongdoing by deputies Wade Grim and Chad Miller after reviewing reports, interviewing witnesses and watching patrol camera footage of the June 23 encounter.

Authorities say the man had confronted deputies with a gun when he was ordered out of his vehicle. Investigators say a struggle over the gun ensued and a shot was fired from the man’s gun. Grim then shot the man, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Kleine says criminal charges are possible against the man, who remains hospitalized.

USDA: Many Factors Considered Amid Animal Disease Outbreaks

USDADES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it considers many factors when determining ways to euthanize large numbers of animals during a disease outbreak.

The agency released the statement Thursday in response to a letter from an animal rights group criticizing a USDA proposal to respond to a future outbreak of bird flu.

The Humane Society of The United States’ letter focused on statements made by USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford during a Senate committee hearing last week.

Clifford said shutting off ventilation systems to barns when the highly contagious disease is found may be more humane and efficient than gassing or using foam to suffocate the birds. Those methods were used amid this year’s outbreak.

The animal rights group says the latest idea is gruesome and should be scrapped.

Use of Fracking Technology Planned in Cleanup of Nebraska Groundwater

groundwaterLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A company plans to help clean up groundwater pollution at its soybean extraction plant in Lincoln by use fracking technology.

The state’s environmental quality agency gave preliminary approval last month to Archer Daniels Midland Co. for the work.

Crews will inject emulsified iron and vegetable solutions under high pressure into the ground to help remove lingering contaminants, including carbon tetrachloride. The hazardous chemicals were once commonly used as a grain fumigant to kill insects during the 1950s and 1960s.

Company officials believe the contamination was there before it bought the grain elevator complex in 1966.

Supervisor Tom Buell, of the state agency’s voluntary cleanup program and Superfund unit, says there’s no public health risk associated with the groundwater contamination.

Madison Fire Chief Tim Reeves says the house and everything in it — including a car in the garage — was destroyed.

No one was injured in the fire.

West Nile Virus Confirmed in Platte County Mosquitoes

mosquitoCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — An eastern Nebraska health department has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in the area.

The East Central District Health Department in Columbus — about 80 miles west of Omaha — found the virus in mosquitoes collected June 26 in Platte County.

The Department of Health and Human Services says there has been one human case of West Nile in Nebraska so far this year — a male between the ages of 14 and 25 somewhere in central Nebraska.

West Nile is transmitted to people through mosquitoes that feed on an infected bird. Most infected people have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. A small percentage develops a serious illness.
