Attorney: Investigation of Hall County Jail Has Begun

jailGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — An investigation of the Hall County Jail has begun following a letter sent to the Hall County Board of Supervisors by a retired jail employee voicing concerns about the jail’s operation and management.

Hall County Attorney Jack Zitterkopf said attorneys from a Lincoln law firm arrived in Grand Island this week to conduct interviews of jail staff and administrators.

Zitterkopf declined to say whether any jail officials have been put on leave during the investigation.

Zitterkopf confirmed the county’s receipt of a letter by a retired jail sergeant outlining the concerns, but has declined to release the letter, saying it’s part of an investigation and protected personnel file.

Mom Accused of Letting Toddler Sip Margarita Avoids Trial

judgeshipSALEM, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts woman accused of allowing her 2-year-old daughter to sip her margarita at a restaurant and pouring some of it into the girl’s sippy cup has avoided trial and possible deportation.

Forty-two-year-old Sheldy Nelson of Lynn was originally scheduled to go to trial Wednesday on charges of child endangerment and providing alcohol to a minor.

A judge last week agreed to continue the charges without a finding for 11 months. They will be dismissed if Nelson takes a parenting class, passes random alcohol tests and complies with orders from child welfare officials.

Her attorney has said Nelson, who is from Haiti, didn’t realize margaritas contained alcohol. He said a conviction would result in deportation.

A waitress told police last August that Nelson ignored two warnings from restaurant staff to stop giving her daughter sips of her margarita.

Texas Man Accused of Raping Teen in Nebraska Pleads to Sex Trafficking

gavel-and-scaleCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — A 31-year-old Texas man accused of raping a teenage girl in a Nebraska motel has pleaded no contest to a count of sex trafficking of a minor in a deal with prosecutors.

Erick Mills faces up to 50 years in prison when he’s sentenced on Aug. 4.

Court documents say Mills was working in Columbus when he met a 16-year-old Omaha girl and later agreed to pick her up in the city on Jan. 23.

Prosecutors say Mills and the teen ended up at a Columbus hotel with two other men, where Mills forced the girl to sniff cocaine. Authorities say he later raped her multiple times over several hours after the other men refused to pay him to have sex with the girl.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man accused of hitting his mother and stealing guns from her home has been sentenced to six to nine years in prison.

37-year-old Jacob F. Brehm was sentenced Wednesday. He had pleaded guilty to attempted possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Prosecutors say Brehm’s mother told police she tried to keep her son away from the guns when he came to get them because she knew he wasn’t allowed to have them due to a prior conviction. According to police, Brehm said he wanted to sell one of the guns.

Brehm was arrested after a standoff with a SWAT team trying to serve a search warrant. Police say they recovered an AK-47 and a Glock 26 handgun from his home.

Prosecutors want alcohol monitoring for Nuggets’ Ty Lawson

817px-Ty_Lawson_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Colorado prosecutors want Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson to use an alcohol monitoring device after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence for a second time this year.

Lawson was arrested in Los Angeles on Tuesday and is scheduled to stand trial in a Denver DUI case next month.

After his January arrest in Denver, Lawson was ordered not to drink alcohol and not violate any laws as part of his bond. Prosecutors now are asking a judge to require him to use a device, such as an ankle bracelet, that monitors the body for alcohol.

A judge could rule on the request Friday when Lawson is due in court for a hearing.

His agent, Happy Walters, couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a luncheon to benefit one of their own.

On Saturday, July 25, the LCSO will host the luncheon at the Eagles Club, 620 North Chestnut Street, to benefit Lieutenant Jeff Hedgecock.

Hedgecock has been an employee of the Lincoln County Detention Center since 1986, and has been active in youth sports for over 25 years.

According to organizers, Hedgecock is facing significant medical issues stemming from Type II diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and is currently completing processing to be placed on the donor list for a double kidney/liver transplant.

In order to help offset the enormous expenses the Hedgecocks will incur, the LCSO will be serving hot dogs and sides from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., for a free-will offering.

Additionally, a silent auction will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and bidders need not be present to win.

Monetary donations can also be made to Nebraskaland National Bank or online at www.gofundme.com/jeffhedge.

The Mix 97.1 crew will be broadcasting live, so come help us support the Hedgcock family.

2 Killed in Rollover Crash in Cass County

cass county sheriffPLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two people have died in a rollover accident near Beaver Lake in Cass County.

According to authorities, 22-year-old Jeremiah Ferguson of Omaha and 21-year-old Kelsey Leclaire of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died Tuesday.

Authorities say a 2006 Volkswagen GTI Hatchback went through a stop sign at a Highway 75 intersection and struck an embankment. According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, the vehicle went over a fence before it landed upside down in a bean field.

Cass County Sheriff William Brueggemann said a local lawn care service noticed tracks and debris and found the vehicle, which was not visible from the highway.

Brueggemann said speed was likely a factor in the crash.
