Grand Island Seeks to Keep Minors from Having E-Cigarettes

ecigaretteGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska law already criminalizes minors possessing e-cigarettes, but Grand Island officials are pursuing a city ordinance declaring the same thing, nonetheless.

City Attorney Bob Sivick said police asked for the ordinance.

Sivick says the concern comes as e-cigarettes are growing in popularity — particularly among teens.

Sivick says having a city ordinance means the infraction can be prosecuted in municipal court and keep such cases from clogging the Hall County court system, where more serious crimes take precedence. Sivick says it also would give police the ability to confiscate e-cigarettes without the worry of having to return the product to the owner if the county attorney declines to prosecute.

Violation of the ordinance would carry a $25 fine.

Arrest Made in Lincoln Trailer Fire Believed to Be Arson

arsonLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police have arrested a 19-year-old man they believe started a fire outside his girlfriend’s mobile home in Lincoln.

Firefighters were called to the blaze around 12:30 a.m. Monday — the fourth time in less than a month they had been called to the trailer park for a fire.

Investigators say the man moved to the mobile home park about a month ago, around the same time the string of fires there began. One of the fires on July 4 killed a dog.

The man, who has not yet been formally charged, was convicted in 2013 of arson and sentenced to a year in jail for starting a fire in the basement of a vacant Lincoln home.

Nebraska Woman Who Testified Home Was ‘Temple of Drugs’ Sentenced

judgeshipYORK, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska judge has sentenced a woman to prison for distributing marijuana and prescription drugs at her home, which she called a temple for religious drug use.

Brenda Hines, of York, was convicted in May of four drug charges, including one for maintaining a place for drug trafficking.

She had testified that what she called her Temple of Zion reflected her religious beliefs and that God provided the marijuana she sold to temple members.

Hines was sentenced Monday to a term of two to four years on three counts and three months on a fourth count. The sentences will be served concurrently, meaning that Hines’ total sentence will be two to four years, with credit for the 33 days she already spent in custody.

City of Lincoln to Build Greenhouse to Store Plants

city-of-lincolnLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln city officials want to build a nearly $115,000 greenhouse to store plants during the fall and winter months.

Plans call for the more than 4,000-square-foot greenhouse to be built on the west end of Antelope Park.

A Parks and Recreation Department official says that the city has received nearly $40,000 in grants to build the structure, with city funds to cover the rest of the project’s costs.

The city now pays two private nurseries to store the plants during the colder months.

One of the nurseries will continue to store the plants for Sunken Gardens. City officials say flooding in May damaged the other nursery’s greenhouses, and it won’t be able to store city plants this fall.

Driver’s Ed Car Collides with Tractor-Trailer; 2 Teens Dead

ambulance-lightsWARWICK, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a driver’s ed car collided with a tractor-trailer at a New York intersection, killing two teenage passengers and sending two other teens in the car and the driving instructor to hospitals with serious injuries.

Warwick police say the accident happened Tuesday morning when a teenage girl behind the wheel of the car apparently crossed into the path of the truck.

Goshen School Superintendent Daniele Connor says all four teens were students at the district high school, which contracts with Decat Driving School in Middletown to provide driver’s training to students.

Officials say the two boys who died were in the back seat of the car. The girl and another male teen and the instructor were taken to hospitals, as was the truck driver.

Their names were not released.

NSP Plans Extra Enforcement for ‘Cruise Nite’ in Kearney

state-patrol-logo(Kearney, Neb.)- The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP), in conjunction with the Kearney Police Department and the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, will conduct two nights of special enforcement efforts Friday and Saturday, July 17-18, in Kearney.

The special enforcement designed to reduce the potential for serious injury and fatality crashes is planned to coincide with the 28th annual Kearney Cruise Nite. The event held WednesdaySunday, July 15-19, draws hundreds of classic car enthusiasts together for four days of fun and festivities.

The special enforcement will include high visibility patrols and vehicle checks during the evening and early morning hours of Friday and Saturday, July 17-18.

“Whenever we get a lot of people and automobiles together in one place there is the potential for traffic congestion and crashes,” said Captain Chris Kolb, Commander Troop C-Grand Island. “We want everyone to enjoy themselves and to do so in a safe, responsible manner, by complying with all traffic safety laws.”

In 2014, troopers made arrests and issued citations and warnings for Driving While Intoxicated (1), Minor in Possession of Alcohol (17), Open Container (2), Misdemeanor Drug Possession (7), No Seat Belt (9), and Child Restraint Violation (3).

A $10,950 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS) will help to pay for overtime hours for troopers and communication specialists during the two night special enforcement.
